Requires significant work to make functional.
Casting is pourous and far from flat, but that's somewhat expected at this price point. The cutting edge was about 1/32 out of square (this was the worst quality control item I found), it had an awful edge, and there wasn't a tight screw on it. Overall, you'll need to spend some time to make this functional and if you don't it'll be a miserable experience. These types of tools probably drive off a bunch of new wood workers when they try using dull planes on workmates. I bought as a gift and anticipated some tuning being needed. You should anticipate the same if you buy this product. Recommendations: If you buy, have a good variety of sandpaper or another sharpening device (I use 60, 120, and 240 sandpaper, then 400, 800, and 3000 wet stones) and a flat reference surface.

Expect poor craftsmanship and significant prep
At this price point I wasn't expecting a lot, and I didn't get a lot. - Fit and finish is...mostly fine except that mine came with an obviously crooked back handle. I removed it and saw that the drill through is easily 2-3mm off center. - It's unclear to me whether the frog is actually a separate piece from the sole. It has screws in it, that's for sure, but the frog adjustment screw doesn't seem to widen or narrow the mouth in the slightest. - The lateral adjustment lever was bent backwards and needed to be manhandled straight in order to function. - There is also no apparent manual or instructions included, and I'm sure we all are familiar with the nightmare of trying to find any sort of consistent, objective instruction online. - Most troubling were the noticable chips in the cutting edge. Out of the box attempts to plane some work ended in tears and recriminations. I obviously will need to spend quite a bit of time sharpening before this is tool is viable. I am considering just biting the bullet and buying a stanley. I don't expect any better results out of the box but I'm pretty sure their QA and machining are a little better. - Surprisingly the shoe is nice and flat and square, which doesn't really seem to be the case for a lot of people. Wrapping up, for what I paid this isn't the worst tool I've ever used. Fit and finish is spotty but not to the point of uselessness, although YMMV based on other reviews. This isn't exactly a throwaway but it requires more and more complicated prep work than I think most newbies are prepared to take on. The blade on mine is garbage and buyers should expect to spend a lot of time readying it before they get results. The nature of the defects in the piece I got make me think that I could buy another and get a whole new set of problems, or none at all. Which is a huge problem in and of itself because it speaks to poor QA and haphazard machining. If I were to return this, maybe the replacement would have the handle screwed on straight but the mouth would be skewed or the sole would be crooked. Who knows? I would like to know, and that's why I think in sum that you should probably just spend the extra cash for a tool that is manufactured a little more precisely.

Beautiful plane for price
Didn’t want to fork over $100+ for a jack plane and was looking for something that was not going too cheap. This turned out perfect for a beginner like me and is very well kept during transport (atleast for me). Toe was nice and flat and blade wasn’t chipped up and barely needs a bit of sharpening to get it cutting effortlessly.

Will need a bit of love for this plane to give it back
I'll echo what others have said and say this will take you maybe an hour, maybe 8 depending on if you hit the production lottery. My only gripe is the lever cap and chipbreaker were rusting? I realized there was no oil on any part of this plane. had some steel wool so not a problem. the sole flattening was probably what took me the longest because there was a nick right at the blade opening (unlucky). 120 grit made it pretty easy to rectify. sides of the plane were pretty damn straight so made it nice for shooting board purposes. the frog was dead flat on all contacts which was nice. the plane iron had a nick in it but was gonna sharpen the thing anyways. all in all for the price i still say it was worth if you have a bit of time to invest in properly tuning the thing. the boxing should probably be changed. separate the pieces please!

Keep looking
The price is beginner friendly but the plane is not. I was prepared to have to do some work on the blade. That's a gimmie on any plane but when this thing is fully assembled with a razor sharp blade the adjustments don't allow it to retract enough to take a thin clean shaving. Just skips and gouges. If you're new, save your money and get something with a higher base quality. Expect to have to sharpen the blade of course. I only I'd returned this when I had the chance and it's too late now.

Not great if your looking for something to work out of the box.
Decent plane, factory finish is better than average at the price point, but not great by any stretch of the imagination, 2 hours worth of flattening and it works like a charm. The pictures show a cam lever cap, however it's a screw down lever cap. According to the companies customer service - "...I think the angle of the photo is what is throwing off the photos. Nonetheless, we will send this to our graphics team and see if we can get some current photos uploaded to ensure they are accurate. ..." -Dawna M. Love this plane
Yes, it takes a little work out of the box. But spend 30 mins flattening and sharpening, and it works as well as a $250 plane

Has good bones and works like a champ once tuned up, but unusuable garbage out of the box
Don't expect to use this in any kind of useful manner without doing some work to it first. It is basically useless when it arrives. It doesn't cut, it gouges and grinds wood into sawdust through sheer manpower. After planing, the wood looks like it was attacked by a drunk beaver. I didn't expect much at this price point, but it still managed to disappoint. But with some work and adjustment you can make it into a wonderful little tool. You're paying for the good base materials, not for a ready-to-use finish. You will have to do a lot of grinding/sanding/sharpening/polishing. Expect to have to flatten the sole, file the blade slot, sharpen the blade, get the right angle to make the chip-breaker flush, and sand and refinish the hand grips to make this into a decent tool. But once you do, it's an excellent performer. Easy to use, nice sturdy hardware, plenty of adjustment options and good quality base materials. And while it will never fool anyone into thinking it's grandpa's old antique, you can make this into a cheap, effective and durable addition to your workshop. Smooth curls, nice thin strips, good weight and good feel. I really like it. If you already have the gear you need to get it whipped into shape, this is an outstanding bargain and I can't recommend it enough. If you don't have the tools and patience though, you'll need to increase your budget to get something that is decent out of the box -- because this definitely isn't going to be what you want.

cheap, needs effort to make functional
The unit I received came in a box that had a hole where the lateral adjustment lever had poked through at some point. The bag it was in had a matching hole. The body was in good shape over all, only one chip in the paint, and the sole was square to the sides for the most part. The sides did angle in after the first half inch. The mouth had a bit of paint that I filed off easily. I disassembled the whole thing to go ever every piece which is where I found the frog had some machining issues on the bottom. I am still working on making everything flat. The blade however needs massive work as it is not square, nor is it the proper width along its length. The blade I received measures 50mm but tapers down to 49mm at the end. This taper starts ~35mm from the end. When I first reground the bevel I ended up having a skewed blade. I am debating on regrinding or getting a good blade from Veritas.

It's probably better to get an old Stanley or Millers Falls and restore
Not much good that can be said about the plane except that it looks really nice and shiny out of the box. Here's the bad though: - Blade material quality is NOT GOOD. You hit a knot once and it dulls the blade and, in my case, it can chip the blade so you'll have to completely reshape the blade again. Mind you, this is even after I sharpened it. I wasn't planing on knots with the out of the box edge. - Not much precision in ANY of the components that need it most. The blade needed a lot of tuning. I spent a lot of the time flattening the back side and then sharpening the blade (good thing the flattening only needs to be done once). This is fine since with most planes regardless of quality and price, you may have to do this anyway. HOWEVER, the chip breaker was completely garbage out of the box. It was not making full contact with the blade, had to fix it. It was FAR from square, so I had to re shape it since out of the box, there would be about 2mm of difference between the distance of the chip breaker and the blade edge from one side to the other. - The sole is FAR from flat. This doesn't bother me as much as the fact that one of the sides (the one that would ride on a shooting board) is FAR FAR from square. So forget about this for shooting board usage. It will require a lot of work to get it flat and square. - The mouth is kind of crooked. - The frog does not look square/parallel with the mouth so the blade might be coming out at a slight angle. This is made worse by the fact that - the lateral adjustment lever doesn't seem to do anything?? It adjust but extremely little. Not enough to actually be able to get the blade at the right angle. I realized this when I got a Stanley plane and went to use the lever and it actually adjusted a great amount more in comparison. I think, with the amount of work that this plane needs out of the box, you're better off buying a used or even a decent condition old Stanley plane and tuning that. Because even if you end up getting this and fixing it to a working condition, it still has cheap materials so the durability is suspect. With a vintage Stanley, even if it becomes out of tune, the plane itself will last generations. This plane isn't really cheap either, if you consider that you need to get extra tools just to fix it (if you don't have them already)

This plane needs plenty of work to be ready for use. Still, I am happy with my purchase.
Be prepared for plenty of work getting this plane ready for use. I have been working at smoothing the bottom of this plane. Also, the blade and cap iron are shipped loose in the box, and my plane blade had a large nick in the cutting edge. I am shaping the plane blade for use as a scrub plane, reshaping that cutting edge, so this was not a problem for me. I think it would be annoying for most customers. I had to do plenty of work getting the front and back surfaces of the plane blade flat, and more work reducing the grooves left by the machining of the blade. That said, I have an affordable #5 plane.

Low End Plane
This plane needs to be setup before use. They didn't protect the blade for shipping its stored in plastic bag with the chipper and bounces around in the box therefore is chipped and needs extension honing to get it sharp. The black painted parts started to flake already. the chip holder is a screw therefore every time you remove the chipper and blade the screw needs resetting on reinsertion, a pain but do able. other wise the sole is good an flat and smooth didn't need much leveling the edges are smooth also requiring a bit of de buring. After setting up the frog and leveling the sole, de chipping and sharpening the blade.... was able to plane maple with ease to a smooth finish. summing up.... put allot of time into setting up ... its cheap but works.
