Probably more of an optical illusion...
My dog is a destructive, master escape artist who needed something that could hold up to her antics. I bought the main gate component (Model MG-25) along with the 12" horizontal extender (Model BX-12) and this 8" vertical extender (Model TPX-1). It's installed in the hallway entrance to my front door (not in a door frame) to keep her from bolting out the door when I come in or out. The instructions for the main gate were okay; assembling the other two components was horrible. It was really just a step up from "here's some random hardware, figure it out." You will need either a plier/adjustable wrench combo or a socket wrench set to install. The instructions are unclear for the vertical extender, and the "instructional pictures" are very unhelpful. The bar does extend horizontally, but it's a bit of a pain to undo the existing hardware to make it work. Pros: -When assembled, the complete gate collection is very sturdy. Cons: -This gate is very heavy when completely assembled (main gate + horizontal extender + vertical extender). The main gate component really needs to be attached to a wall stud to support its weight. Even without the horizontal extender, it's got some heft to it. -The gate and the extender does not "collapse" when opened. If it's fitted within a 52" doorway, you need 52" of cleared space for it to open all the way. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but something you should consider before purchasing. -The vertical extender does not span the full width of the gate + horizontal extender, (it maxes out at around 42.5") and it MUST be attached to the latch side of the gate. I didn't realize this before purchasing, and originally planned to center the vertical extension to make up for the gap. Not so much. Overall, what made me invest in the total gate assembly was that it was steel with vertical bars (to discourage climbing), lacks a mini "cat-sized" door, includes wall-mounted hardware, and has options for horizontal and vertical extenders. It is sturdy and expensive, and I hope this will be the last gate I ever have to buy. Good luck with assembly!

Height extender only be used with one model of gate
Heads up that the 8” height extender can ONLY be used with Cardinal Gates hardware mounted gate model Duragate MG-25. I bought it to use with a different model pressure mounted Cardinal gate and cannot. Unfortunately, the seller does not mention this on the product listing anywhere. I called Cardinal Gates customer service and they confirmed that I would not be able to use the extender. I will be returning it to Amazon. Gave it five stars anyway because I’m sure the extender can be used just fine with the correct gate.

Works so far
I purchased the gate and two extensions to keep my 74 lb. AmStaff confined to the kitchen. He can jump and climb, despite being a chunky fellow. He bulldozes over the compression-mounted gates, so I needed something that could be mounted with hardware to the door frame. I used longer screws than the ones supplied to attach the hinge and latch, and despite the whole contraption seeming wobbly, it held despite him banging into it and eventually climbing over. NOTE: I highly recommend sliding 1-3/4" PVC pipe over the top horizontal bars of the extension. They will roll and your dog will not be able to pull himself over. After making this modification, chunky butt has not escaped the kitchen.

Good quality- I modified it to fit my gate
I bought this as an extension to add on the top of an existing baby gate...to keep my dog from jumping over. This is meant for a Cardinal brand gate, which mine isn't. The three crossbars telescope, and I found that by shortening them with a hacksaw I was able to make it fit perfectly. One bolt on each side holds it securely to my gate.

Narrow doorway? Hope you have a hack saw
This extenstion does not go as narrow as the gate it attaches to. You can modify the extension, by cutting it down with a saw. You would think the gate and extension would follow the same width parameters, but that is not the case. Otherwise, the extension works great.

Poor Service
This might be a decent product if it actually arrived. E-mailed the company and got a reply that it was shipped separately from another item...interesting I never received a 2nd tracking number nor did they provide me with one, seems like they just didn't ship it.....would have expected better service from a higher rated company on Amazon, but that's the digital age for ya, no accountability and excuse after excuse as to why something didn't get done. Hope you have better luck than I did, and if it happens to you I hope you get some better customer service.

Height extension gave us a bit more coverage, unfortunately our dog was still able to leap over it!! I guess it was worth the try! LOL
