Expensive...but worth the money
I bought one pf these gates a couple years ago...in hopes of keeping a new puppy out of our pantry. I worked perfectly...the walk through gate makes getting from room to rooms o much easier than a step over gate...this gates sturdy...and it was easy to put together. We like it so much that we just bought a 2nd one! We have 2 corgi pups...yes, they are ADORABLE!!!....and theyre big time roamers and wrestlers. Between the 2 gates...we can keep all the babies exactly where we need them to be. And thats wherever we are!! Buy one if youre gate shopping. Ive bought and returned several gates...Until i found this one!! Worth the money.

Fits in with decor and door is great.
The door is great and latches well. It looks so much better than other gates I have bought, I bought a second one for my stairs.

Best Pet Gate with Door
I actually LOVE this free-standing pet gate but will explain the 4 instead of 5 stars. Contrary to other reviews I read in advance, it arrived without any broken hardware and is a very nice-looking gate (I also have 2 Richell long/low barrier gates of the same style). Also, the gate door swings shut and locks in place automatically no matter which side I open (careful not to force the door open past 90 degrees or to allow it to slam shut too hard...gentle use will keep this working well longer). However, it wasn't quite as easy to put together as other reviews stated. First, the wooden feet are 4 separate pieces that must be manually screwed into the main gate: on one side of the gate this is easily done on the vertical end of 2 of the feet -- a short screw hole in both wooden feet; however, for the 2 wooden feet that go on the other side of the gate, you need to carefully navigate the screw into the much longer-burrowed opening leading to the nail hole that's on the vertical part of the wooden foot while holding the leg steady...not so easy to hold the foot with one hand and screw the nail straight into the unseen nail hole at the same time (better if you have a second person helping...I didn't). This may be why one person's review mentioned her own foot hitting the wooden gate foot and it "snapping like a twig"...the screws (and accompanying washers) must be inserted completely straight and secured very tight. Another design defect is that there's a small screw that must be inserted into the dense wood at the top of the gate door once it's adjusted to the instructed distance from the opposing side panel (why this isn't pre-measured and done by the manufacturer is beyond me) -- there's no hole in the top of the gate for that screw (again, manufacturer could have made it so door already at correct distance and fixed in place), and you really need a power drill to insert that screw. I used a lot of elbow grease and could only get the nail in half way...need to get a drill. Third imperfection was that the white plastic locking pin at top of the door wasn't sticking out far enough. I had to unscrew the 2 screws securing the plastic cover which houses that pin, remove the cover, gently stretch (don't overstretch) the small metal spring that the pin fits into, and then put the 3 pieces back together and re-secure the screws. Now the pin is right where it needs to be. Last issue is that while it's great that the side panels adjust in increments, they cannot be locked in place...there's no total panel position lock other than keeping the gate flat on the floor. The panels shift when lifting the gate if grabbed only by the center/door panel, i.e., the side panels slide slightly downwards from their plastic connectors in order to adjust them. It really would have been better engineering to be able to lift the gate for floor positioning and simultaneously have the panels stay securely in place while doing so. Otherwise, the gate is great: my 13-pound dog cannot push open the door thanks to the upper and lower pin locks and she cannot push open the side panels...both of which my little genius accomplished with my previous expensive, free-standing, three-panel, accordian, wooden door gate -- which ultimately fell apart and which was NOT a Richell gate. So, all said, I do recommend this gate!

Finally, found one that works!
After long hours of searching for a gate to fit my stairs at the base of my stair giving me room to step down, I ended up having to order this one. I didn't want to pay this much for a dog gate but I was very happy when I found out it worked. The gate I needed, had to be tall, bars close together, adjustable width, have a door that would open in the front or back and free standing. The gate door opens easily and opens wide for passage either side. The flexibility of the gate enabled me to position it where I needed it. It could be a little more stable when opening the gate door it can move a little and that is why I gave sturdiness a 4. I gave it a five because it was the only gate I could find that would work. My little Yorkie puppy s a jumper, climber and can move faster than lightening.

edited review - I removed a star
When this arrived one of the hinges was broken but the sellers contacted richell on my behalf and they sent a replacement so I thought the sellers was good but it doesn't bode well for the plastic hinges as the last freestanding gate which I had, had metal hinges which eventually broke with me (with the tension the dog kept pushing on) so I'm not happy that now they are plastic and not very sturdy plastic. Also the other negative or wish is I thought the gate would close behind me auto if I closed it hard enough but I have to lift it slightly to latch it everytime. It is higher than the high other freestanding richell gate which I could climb over if I wanted but you can't do that with this. My dog can easily push this out of the way with his nose (we have hardwood floors and put felt pads under it)but I just position a table over one side of it and I put a door stopper on the other side in the skirting board so he can't push it. This way I still can remove it or move it very easily out of the way as I don't need a permanent gate but feel quite secure in leaving him when needed in one area. I like the addition of the bending area on both sides and it's fine for my standard doorway by bending one and leaving one flat. The feet are quite close together and I could imagine a few people would fall over it if you have it configured fully flat but it does keep it stable. I'd have loved it in white and I bought the last one before the white one was released but needed another one as my original one has been broken for over a year. I hope I get at least the same wear out of it, and it is good not to have to climb over it with things in my hand so love the door, maybe if they can make one that closes behind me that would be great! edit - Well the new hinge is now broken, that didn't last long. My dog is only 36lbs and he noses the part of gate that I folded over just enough away from wall to slip past but by doing so causes stress on the hinge. But what amazes me is now he can open the door! The door always sat a bit down to the left but over time it's gotten worse and there isn't that much length on the bit that sits in the post to the left causing the gate to stay shut. he is able to put his nose on one of the horizontal metal bars and by bringing his head up it's off it's latch and he's out! He's a stupid dog not intelligent so it surprised me. I could never leave him now with only that gate. although he has only done this a couple of times and now prefers to get out the broken hinge side.

Hardware is flimsy
Hardware is flimsy. I bought this to go on my back porch to keep from my young dog from escaping the back deck. He will be a strong animal but I thought because the gate was made out of hardwood it would stand up to him jumping against it. The problem is that the plastic lock and hinges while strong enough for a small child or dog were not strong enough for a dog the size of a retriever. While don’t want to use the word flimsy but that’s the only word that applies, as a matter of fact when I received the gate the lock was broken in transport. The rest of the gate except for the locks seemed sturdy enough but the lock is the piece that you really want to work. Thank you

High quality dog barrier.
This is a fantastic product for a dog barrier. It's nice not to have to step over something anymore. This priduct is very well made and has a wide choice of width options because of the adjustable wings. Also it does not need to be squeezed against the wall or drilled into it. Need to move it somewhere else? Just pick it up. I really appreciate the quality and little details. For example, at the top where you grab the door to pull up and open it, it's indented just a little for your fingers to grab. FYI, it comes 95% assembled. There are feet that must be attached that we didn't see at first in the packaging. Also you must PULL UP on the gate to open the wings.

Do not buy it unless they put a Drop lock on it.
The first gate I received was broken so replaced immediately. This gate is now in use from more than a month and i am pretty happy with this pet gate as my dog have not found a way to pull its edges and make his way, like i expected. only complaint is it shakes alot... otherwise serves the purpose. Update after 1.5 years.. My Dog have learnt to lift up the gate form below and open it with this mouth.. I need a locking mechanism please suggest some thing.. else it is useless and I have bought 2 of these for around 600 $.. what a waste of money..

Good service, good product, good value.
this is a wonderful gate. It isn't really heavy duty(my small dogs can push it backwards easily if they choose). It is easily assembles and looks great. The huge range of adjustment, easy open and close gate, and the fact that it is freestanding so it doesn't damage the walls, are all great perks. It came quickly and well-packaged with simple instructions and everything we needed to set it up.

Dog gate that looks at home in the dining room.
This product was super easy to assemble, and does everything I hoped it would. It is keeping my 3 boxers from running into the dining room to look out the front window. The door is easy to use, and if it is not aligned correctly, it is easy to fix, using the instructions. I would definitely recommend this product to a friend, or dog lover.
