There is SOME trial and error involved, but this tool makes the process MUCH easier.
This tool did the trick to set the knives on a Central Machinery 6" jointer. Had I not had it, it would have taken a LOT more effort and to get the knives just right. Using it, I did have to do a few cycles of setting the knives, then testing them to ensure all 3 were adjusted to the same depth of cut across the width of the jointer. But it's mostly a matter of paying attention to the scribe lines and their relative location to the knife. On one knife I did have to manually tweak one end to get it to the right height. But the start-to-finish time of setting the knives took a little over an hour; without this jig or one like it, getting the knives in the right position would have taken a lot longer.

Waited to long
I waited way too long to buy this knife setting jig. I have a couple of vintage jointers and I always set the knife's myself because I am just that good...lmbo. They ain't never right. After building a very nice piece of furniture ( Twice ) I broke down and convinced myself that I should buy this jig, maybe it might help, Maybe. OH GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN, This jig worked so fast and WELL, I was mad at myself thinking you dummy you spent hours trying to set knife's and this jig did it in just a few minutes. If you don't have a machine that auto sets knife's get yourself one or even two just in case.

helps to set jointer blades
The tool does what it says it will: holds jointer blades at a consistent height when they are replaced. The only complaint I have is that it has to sit against the fence (the magnets hold it to the outfeed table), but positioning it against the fence makes the inside tightening bolt hard to reach. I found that I had to tighten the middle and outside bolts then remove the tool to get at the inside one.

Not always needed
My jointer has bed screws that hold adjustment without magnets the magnets screed me up by pulling Would help if you lack set screws

useful jig. like a third hand
It worked pretty well. The magnets were strong. There are a couple of videos on Youtube showing a couple of different methods on how this jig is used if you need help. I preferred using a different method than shown in the instructions. The only thing you need to watch for is that those little magnets in the bottom are so strong they will stick to your Jointer table when you try to pull it off, so sliding it off the table is preferred. Since a couple of these magnets came out of there sockets I found it necessary to push down at the front end of the jig when tightening down the knives. I used a dial indicator to double check that the blades were even with the out-feed table.

Not perfect but does its job.
Had to replace jointer knives on an old Rockwell/Delta 37-220. Was scared of spending million hours to get knives aligned so bought this. Had never changed knives before so was very apprehensive. This jig worked nicely. Was able to replace all 3 knives in less than an hour. The only pain points: - One of the magnets kept falling off. A little superglue did the trick. - Finding apex of the knife is a pain. Basically trial and error. - Intitially I was getting one side of the knife a bit higher. Turned out that the plastic was bending. Held it down to with little force and then everything worked as intended. I think metal version will be better in this regard.

Helps
It was ok for sure. It was probably all user error but with more practice it might be easier. My jet jointer is spring loaded so I had to use extra force to hold this jig down

Was ok
Worked for me. Took some practice but it did end up square.

They work well enough.
Works well enough. They are not as solid as I would like and you have to make sure they are parallel before setting your blades. For the price you get what you pay for. I’ll use them for now until I can afford a metal set.
