Seems to work as well as the big name brand..
I purchased (6 of) this item to replace the two Thompson name brand of this item. After over a year of service, the Thompson's were simply past there usable life span (the jars were almost all water and no gel left). When I received this item I noticed two things immediately: 1) As some other reviewers have mentioned already, the item was slightly different than the picture. In my case the label from the top of the jar was removed leaving the sticky residue from where it was. It is impossible to know at this point if the label/brand is the same as pictured. In place of this top label a label was adhered to the side of the jar (avery style label you would send through your inkjet printer). 2) The holes in the jar insert under the lid where significantly fewer than those of the Thompson brand jars. Given some other reviewers remarks of this item not providing the humidity they required, I attributed this shortcoming to item 2 above and decided to refill my 2 Thompson jars with the gel from the new jars. Results: Last night the humidor had a humidity of 58% (the 2 Thompson jars were filled with RO water); tonight the humidor has a humidity of 69%. (For your reference if you are interested in ambient humidity; I live in northeast Florida and the humidity here today is 55% outside and 39% inside.)

Much like the negative reviews here
Much like the negative reviews here, my jar arrived with very few crystals in it. They did not even cover the bottom of the jar, but I assure you it is enough. I filled the jar with distilled water. The holes are small enough that water does not go through easily. I found that filling the top, putting the cap on tightly, then shaking the jar got the water down there. After filling the jar, I went away for about a half hour. When I returned, the crystals had absorbed all the water, and the jar was full of a gel substance. I cannot comment on how well they work yet. I ordered them with a new humidor that has yet to be seasoned. After 2 hours the hydrometer reads 60% while the air in my home is at 20%. I am giving it 5 stars for now. I will adjust my rating if I find it does not keep my humidor where I want it, but I have a feeling that I will not need to do that.

After hydrating, they work great.
I bought 6 of these crystal gel jars back in November of last year. Yes, they came in with bone dry crystals, as most of the negative reviewers have noted. But, if you look at the jar it has two lines, a fill line and an add water line.(they may be hidden behind the sticker with the bar code, but they are there). Just add water to the fill line and wait about 20-30 minutes for the water to be absorbed and you have a jar full of gel crystals. Simple as that. They are low maintenence also, I haven't had to add water to rehydrate yet and this is since November. The gel level is, at present, about halfway between the fill and add water lines. So, it might be a little while before I have to add water. They keep my humidors between 68% and 70% humidity, depending on which humidor I have them in. I'm very satisfied with this product and plan to purchase more when I add another humidor or two to my collection.

Good product for a beginner like me
I've never owned a humidor before, so when I bought one (Quality Importers Capri 25-50 Cigar Humidor, Mahogany ) I figured I would purchase this product to go with it. The reason I purchased this humidifier was because of the high amount of positive reviews and the low cost. I took a star off because the product you receive (or at least I received) is not identical to what is advertised in the product picture. I also took a star off because of the lack of instructions. I'm a beginner and didn't know what to do with this product. I ended up just taking off the lids and filling it with distilled water, and then placing it inside my humidor. So far I have only needed to refill this once or twice and it is keeping the humidity in my humidor right where it needs to be.

good humidifier if you use it right.
When I first opened the box and found that there were literally only 12 teeny tiny crystal pellets in the jar I was livid. Also, there were vague instructions that simply said to add water to the line. Looked NOTHING like the picture after I did. It wasn't until I complained to a buddy of mine about it that I realized I had never used it right. When I finally did, all things were well. All that ti says, fill it with distillers water the first time even if the instructions tell you otherwise. It's the only way the crystals will actually fill the jar. Don't be discouraged by the minuscule amount in the jar when you first get it. They will eventually absorb the water and swell Good luck

Works Great, Otherwise Ok
The item works as described, so it should be 5 stars. However, I had to take one off due to other issues. First, as previously mentioned in other reviews, the item pictured is not what you recieved. Not a big deal to me, as its not like it site out, but would have been nice to know that it is not near as nice looking as in the picture. Secondly, I was a little annoyed that it did not come with any type of instructions at all. Obvioulsy there isn't much to it, but still would have been nice for people who have never used one of these before. I added some distilled water and left the cap off and it seems to be working fine (hopefully that is what you are supposed to do).

*Updated- it really works
I have a 25 cigar humidor and struggle to maintain 70% humidity with this. I added a shot glass filled with water and it hit 70% in a few hrs and holds. I haven't tried it with just the shot glass yet, but the combo seems to work. I'll try to update after I try shot glass only and see if anything changes. Otherwise, I am not sure I can recommend this! *update 9/18/2012 So, I added a little more water and it held the humidity at 65%. it lasted several months. I no longer use the shot glass. I actually bought it again. Just make sure you add enough water . . . . and if the temp is not where you want it, add more water!!! works well and I'm happy.

Fortunately through the reviews I found that this was accurate ...
It worried me at first as there were only a few crystal at the bottom of the jar with no explanation as to why. Fortunately through the reviews I found that this was accurate as the crystals grow when you add water. works great.

A must have!
Bought this little jar to keep the boxes of cigars that I have received as gifts that will not fit in my small humidor. So far so good. Placed this in a small airtight plastic tote, along with a digital hygrometer, and watched the humidity rise steadily. I don't see any shrinking of the crystals yet, but its only been a week or two. Very nice product.

Read below!
For those who are unsure or unaware: upon arrival it will look nothing like the picture and more like a few tiny grains of silica in a small jar. Crystal gel humidifiers like this use DISTILLED WATER ONLY! On the side of the jar you'll see a "full line". Pop off the lid and the plastic cover fill the jar with distilled water to that line. After about 6-8 hours the crystals will be taking up all the space in the jar. Check back every 2-3 weeks and your crystals should be around the "add line" at which point just top up with distilled water back up to the fill line. For best results change these jars every 2 years. DO NOT use tap water, or glycerin solutions. Much better and easier to maintain than any foam humidifiers - IMO. I've attached pictures to show you the water lines and what the jar will look upon filling and after the crystals absorb the water/expand.

Works well
Works as it should, I'm very satisfied. Fill it with distilled water to the fill line, and let the crystals expand for around an hour, they fill the entire jar once hydrated.
