Disappointed
I've tried to keep Betta fish on and off for several years. The main reason I have trouble is quite simply the lack of a good tank heater. I've always only spent around $10 for one, and the last time I think I got one for around $15, and all of those little unregulated heaters only got me a temp. of about 5-8 degrees higher than the temp. in the surrounding room. Once winter set in, the Bettas all died. So this time I thought I would go for the gold and buy a Hydor where I could set the temperature and not worry about it, and even be able to raise the temp. to treat ich and other issues that could rear their ugly head if I had to. I am rating this Hydor 25 Watt at 3 stars because so far it is the best heater I have owned all of these years, but sadly it just cannot do what I expected it could, which is to keep a 2.6 gallon Betta tank 80 degrees. It can manage 78 degrees, which is good, but I feel it struggles to do that and at night the temp falls to 74 degrees, which is just on the edge of Betta cold water tolerance. Some extra information. I live in Illinois in a house that has no insulation due to how old it is, so maybe I simply cannot own Betta fish and should stop trying. We keep the winter house temp. at about 67. At night to save on heating bills (it costs a fortune to heat our home) we drop the temp. to 63ish. The Hydor (which by the way the Hydor from the Amazon photo came to me and not the "Theo" version, whatever that means) thus provides me with a stable 11 degrees over my ambient house temp. so perhaps I am asking for a 25 watt to do too much. It can do no more than 78 regardless of the setting I dial it up to. I have the tank in the main living room area about 15 feet away from the nearest window, and it gets no outside light or drafts. I own a Fluval Spec 3 and have 4 red cherry shrimp and 1 Betta. The design of the Spec tanks is such that the filter and heating elements are hidden in the "back" compartment of the tank which is separated from the front by a partition, giving the tank a very classy look. I figured that due to this, this could be a reason for poorer performance of the Hydor heater, because being in an enclosed small space it, in theory, would heat that compartment's water temp. to the dialed-in amount, read it as the perfect temp. and then stop, without said water getting dispersed into the main body of the tank at that same temperature. I thus raised the originally set temp. from 81 to at around 88 degrees to compensate for this possibility, but it has kept only at 78 regardless. As an added assist to the heater, the filter hose back in that compartment I have cut a few small holes in to lessen the output flow from the nozzle to allow for better Betta living (not giving too strong of a current inside the tank), but this also has the added benefit of circulating the heat from the heater in that compartment better too, which should be helping the situation! When I read the bad reviews this heater got (and of most of the heaters I have researched this is the top rated and best performing) they mentioned that their main issue for the most part was that the heater fried their fish or that the heat output was simply too much! And that was for tanks larger than mine. I've never had such a problem with any heater I have ever owned so I took that as a plus for this one which actually helped sway my decision to buy it. Overheating I can handle...but this is only a 2.6 gallon tank and it just can't pull off 80 degrees. At this point I am debating going up a size to the Hydor 50 watt. but have to figure out if that will fit my tank or be too long. 25 watts doesn't seem to be enough even though it specifies in the listing that the 25 watts is for tanks sized 2-7 gallons and the 50 watts is for tanks 5 gallons and higher. I would GLADLY pay $50-75 for a heater that I could set to 80 degrees, maintain that temp. well without going over, and also be able to raise it 5 degrees higher and lower as desired...one that works the way you imagine it should work. If someone knows of any heater that can do this, please tell me. I really love Bettas and I really want to keep one and not have it die come winter time. How do people even own fish in colder states than mine? I've included photos that show the interior rear compartment set up with the Hydor dial set to 88, and the tank temperature thermometer reading 78, as well as photos of the tank itself so you can see the scale. When I keep the stock LED lights on, I can get the tank to 79 and sometimes even 80 degrees, but I do not have the light on all day, only in the evenings when it's needed, or for taking photos. The temp. drops back as soon as I turn the lights off.

I rated these at a 5 star for one year, but now I am very unhappy with them
In late March 2012, I was unaware that my 2 old aquarium heaters had stopped working. I happened to notice that the water temperature was not even registering on my digital temperature strip on my aquarium front glass. This meant that the water temperature was somewhere in the 60's. Upon inspection of the 2 heaters, the glass in both of my old aquarium heaters had shattered, evidently when the water level had gotten too low causing the glass tube to break and they stopped working. I lost a few fish due to the water being too cold. I immediately searched Amazon for a brand of heaters that would be unaffected if the water level ever got too low. I found these Hydor brand heaters listed on Amazon, their advertisement stated that they would not be affected by low water levels. Unlike most other brands, they would work even if they were not fully immersed in water. On April 4, 2012, I purchased 2 of these Hydor 400 watt heaters from Amazon for my 135 gallon aquarium. For one year, they kept my tank at exactly 74 degrees year around. The tank's water temperature never varied more or less than 1 degree from the 74 degrees that I had them set for. I absolutely loved them. They were the best heaters that I have ever owned in my 40+ years of owning a large fish aquarium. Now, for the rest of the story as to why I am now unhappy with them. Our fish aquarium is located in our basement which stays at 60 degrees year around so good dependable heaters are a must. Whether it is winter or summer, our basement stays between 59 and 60 degrees constantly. 3 different furnace companies have yet been able to solve this problem but it's a great place to be when it reaches 100 degrees outside. Exactly one year and one week after installing these heaters, I decided it was time to do a total tank clean up and a 30% water change. I unplugged and removed both of the heaters and placed them on my workbench which was close by. This was the very first time that I have ever unplugged the heaters since April 2012. After I had finished with my cleanup and water change, I reinserted and replugged both heaters back in. I did not touch the settings as they were both still set at 74 degrees. The next morning I noticed that my aquarium water temperature was 82 degrees. Both heaters were running non-stop, thus overheating the water. I immediately unplugged them and let the water cool back down. After the water had cooled and reached 74 degrees once again, I plugged the heaters back in again, making double sure that they were set at 74 degrees. Both heaters came on, they were both on constantly as the water temperature rose to 78 degrees within a few hours. I adjusted the heaters to their lowest possible temperature settings and tried them once again but the heaters were still on constantly and the water temperature was once again rising. Over the next several days, I tried numerous times to manually shut them down to lowest possible temperature setting, unplugging and replugging them, moving the control knobs back and forth, but they would still heat the tank to over 80 degrees. Up and down water temperature changes are extremely hard on tropical fish. It's like the heaters were stuck wide open to the maximum temperature and the shut off sensors were not functioning. I found the only way to shut them off is to unplug them. I don't know if unplugging and removing them from the tank may have caused them to stop working correctly. Maybe I should have waited an hour or so before removing them from the tank. At any rate, I cannot use them in my aquarium any more. I have ordered two new 300 watt heaters of a different brand from Amazon. Amazon's 2 day delivery is a life saver as the heaters will be here tomorrow. I will keep the Hydors just in case of an emergency. I believe these heaters have a 2 year warranty.

It runs a bit hotter than the temp settings
I like hydro it runs a lil bit but I’ve only used it on nano set ups

On the fence
Im not sure if the thing is functioning or not. Its winter time here and i keep my house around 65f. I have the thermostat on the heater set at 80 and it barely manages to keep the water at 75f in a 3.5 gallon tank. Now I do know that its working because it keeps the water 10 degrees over ambient. I have a betta fish and he’s use to wild swings in his water temp. The thermostat seems to be a gimmick.

I no longer recommend this heater
I purchased this in 2013 for a 2.5 gallon betta tank. It worked well for almost two years before I took that tank apart. I set this heater aside for a while until a few months ago, when I was setting up a 2.5 gallon hospital tank for an elderly betta. I set this heater in the tank for three days before adding the fish, and everything was fine. Temp stayed steady. I added the betta. Next day the temp was a few degrees higher, so I turned the dial lower. Next day same thing - temp a few degrees higher than I wanted, so I turned the dial lower. Summer was just starting to I figured it was just higher temps in the house causing me to need to adjust the heater. Next day I went to feed and medicate that tank and the temp was was 94F (34C). Way, way too high. Betta was not doing well. I slowly lowered the temp in the tank with water changes and switched this heater out for a Hagan Elite Submersible 25 watt heater I bought off craigslist in 2014. I have no idea how old that heater is (previous owner had also bought off craigslist), but I've used it off and on for years and never had a problem with temp fluctuations. I've got several Fluval heaters from 2010 that are still in use and reliable as the day I bought them. So even though this heater worked for a few years I expect better for a heater at this price. You can purchase an EHEIM Jager 25 watt heater on here for only $5 more than this one (as of the date of this review) and those are some of the best, most reliable heaters in the hobby. For the record I've tested this heater in an empty 2.5 gallon tank. At the LOWEST temperature setting the temp in my tank was steady at 94F (34C) for more than a week. At the HIGHEST temperature setting the temp in the tank was 84F (28C) for several days before I tossed this heater. So something clearly went very wrong with the temp controls for this heater.

It worked for 2 months.
I really liked this heater at first but 2 months in use now and it doesn't work correctly anymore, save your money and buy a different one. I would return it if I could. Problems with this heater: - It is not accurate, or consistent, may as not even have a temperature knob as it doesn't work. - 2 months of use and water is leaking into the inside glass which makes this heater no long useful in anyway This is the first time I have used this brand of heater and will be the last. I decided to give it a try as I have liked other Hydor products in the past but this heater is no good, I would not recommend it to anyone.

Buy an Eheim or something else. 1 out of 4 works properly but is now full of condensation
I would highly recommend that no one buy these 50 Watt heaters. Amazon has been working with me over the last month to get one that actually works, and I am still out of luck. The first heater I received would not turn off – I had the dial set to as low as possible, and it continued to heat the water in my 10 Gallon well into the 80’s. The second would constantly cycle on and off and could not get the water above room temperature (74F). The third heater was perfect with only a 1 degree difference in the heater setting and the tank thermometer. However, after 1 week it developed a lot of condensation in the tube. The replacement for that heater could not get the water in the tank above 82F (I have recently started to have an ich issue and need the water much higher). I have decided to keep the heater that has condensation and return the replacement that was sent. The heater with condensation can get the water at a consistent temp anywhere between 74F and 89F without issues. I am just running the risk of it dying. As Amazon has been great, I will keep this heater, and if it eventually dies I will buy an Eheim to replace it. I have an Eheim 75Watt in my 20 Gallon and it is great, the Eheim 50Watt is too big for where I want to keep my heater, so I would need to re-scape my tank if I were to buy it. I am giving the heater a 2 start review because I love the size of it and I have one that works well (but is full of condensation). Hopefully the condensation goes away when the ich is gone and my temps can be lowered.

Ordered two heaters, after 8 months it over heats
I've ordered two of these for my betta tanks. It's been working fine for the last 8 months. One of my heaters seemed to be running a little hotter than the other (85 deg), so I unplugged the heater for 10+ hours and plugged it back in assuming it might help reset the heater. Now it run 5 degrees higher (90 deg). I keep turning it down, and it's not working. My other hydor seems fine for now. Edit: My 2nd 25W heater could barely heat a 2.5 gallon tank. Even when cranked up to max it could barely hit 74 degrees. Clearly a design fault with hydor heaters.

Be careful! Worked for 7 months only. Temperature control broken...
The unit worked for 7 months, then the temperature control died and would not turn off when the preset temperature is reached. The water temperature went up to 100F when we realized the issue and we almost lost our fishes. Went on the Hydor USA site and contact them for a warranty request. (In the meantime, I have to monitor the temperature closely, plug and unplug the unit to keep the water temperature more or less ok. That is troblesome but doable). The warranty coverage is 2 years. First interaction was pleasant when they request photo of unit sticker for batch number, proof of purchase and contact info. With the second interaction, things go quickly downhill: they request that I send them a picture with the electrical chord cut flush to the unit before they will send out a replacement unit. Honestly, I understand that they do not want people to abuse their warranty coverage. They want to ensure the unit is no longer functional and has to be disposed of. But what am I going to do in the meantime before the replacement arrives? (It could easily take days before I will get the replacement unit while I have no way to keep the water temperature warm) Are they going to pay for the lost of my aquatic plants and tropical fishes when the water gets too cold and they die? Customer Support Staff simply does not think things through! (or horrible warranty protocol). Either way, they do not deserve my business.
