Great value for a hamster cage / wonderful transport cage for rats
This is a nice little cage. As I note later in this review, I don't use it for hamsters or gerbils, but I first put it together as if I were going to put a hamster in it so I could review it as such. The cage does meet the minimum size requirements for a hamster. The shelf adds a little more surface to that. The cage goes together easily. The shelf snaps in securely. Make sure you attach the shelf low enough that the ramp, which is a little stiff at first will reach down to the bottom of the cage so your pet can use it. This is important if you are using the food bowl that comes with the cage. The food bowl just drops in, so it would be easy to pull out to refill; it would also be easy to pull out and wash it. Al though I had no use for the wheel, I did attach it temporarily so I could check its fit and operation. It fits. It goes around and around. I think it would be easy for a hamster to use. The cage bottom comes up high enough to prevent bedding from ending up on your floor. You could just put this cage together, add a water bottle, bedding, food — and a hamster! Remember: one hamster to a cage. Hamsters aren't like rats or mice; they aren't social, colony animals. They don't get lonely. They live alone in the wild, they should live alone in their cage. Two hamsters will fight. One — or both — will get injured. They will get all the companionship they need from a caring owner. As with all of the wire cages that are collapsible, where the sides meet, there is a small space. It is certainly not big enough for a hamster to escape, so that is not a worry. I read on a review for a cage similar to this one that their hamster got its foot caught in the cage and they had to have it amputated. Again, I do not know of any wire cage of this type that doesn't have small spaces and also the little hooks that hold the sides together where two sides meet. I guess if this is a big concern for you, you could get one of those (in my opinion overpriced) all plastic homes. I know of Ever got a hamster again, I would prefer a home like this because the open air allows the bedding to dry out more, reducing odor. Bedding that stays dry is much healthier for animals. Also, a wire cage allows you to get close enough for your little pet to get used to your smell and to other scents around the cage. This way, when you go to take your critter out, they won't be as "freaked out". I actually bought this cage as a transport cage for my female rats. Of course, I removed the shelf and wheel so there was more room — and less plastic for the rats to chew! I use it when I have to take one or two cage mates to the vet. I also use it when I take them from their big cage to the area we use for training. Again, I only use it for transporting cage mates. Putting two rats who are not cage mates in something this small is a recipe for disaster! It could also be used as a hospitalization/ short term isolation cage. Bottom line: this cage is a very good value. It is reasonably priced and sturdy.

Great for transportation
I bought this cage to transport my rats from one state to another. The size is perfect for that. Would not recommend it as an actual cage, not even for a dwarf hamster. It's definitely too small for that.

Great quality for the $ SAFE for your hammy
Secure, perfect cage for a single hamster. Buy a metal wheel that can clip to the inside & hang & you'll have 1 happy hammy! I spent $100 on one of the plastic cages with the tubes & tunnels & that thing was JUNK! Our mama hammy & her eight adorable babies got killed because of the defective latch by our cat (On the plastic cage! Not this one I'm reviewing!) I'd definitely recommend this cage for 1 single hamster.

Too small for anything to live in permanently!!!
Bought as a travel cage for my pair of mice, works well for TRAVEL. But it's much much too small for anything living as a permanent enclosure! Assembly was easy and took me less than 5min from unboxing to fully set up.

Kay tee My First Home Habitat for Hamester
I actually bought several of these to use as evacuation cages for the birds that I have in my aviary. They are the perfect size and are just perfect for this. I would definitely recommend this product.

Perfect size for a travel cage for my one sugar glider. The wheel is small but he still tried to play on it LOL

Sturdy cage, but not good for hamsters
I bought this cage to use as a travel cage for my sugar gliders. It would definitely be too small for a full size hamster. I strongly suggest getting a larger cage for about the same price for a hamster. I included some photos so you can see just how small the cage is. For my sugar babies, it's a great cage to use to travel them in. But I gave 3 stars because I do think it would actually be way too small for what it is listed to be used for -- hamsters. Dwarf hamsters or mice would be happiest in this. I'm sorry, the photo is a bit dark. But you can see the sugar glider (pretty similar in size to a hamster) at the front of the cage.
