Fairly bright
Good glow stick the picture is from 24hrs later so the red lasts longer but the yellow did last the 12hrs advertised. Over all would buy again

Not bright enough to see in the dark. Shelf Life: 5 years.
(Color: Red) Not bright enough to see anything in the dark, even only a foot away. However, it glows for a VERY long time (~20hrs), definitely long enough to last the whole night. I think it is most useful for highlighting certain things in the dark. For example, you could attach it to your backpack to find it quickly on the campground at night. Or attach it to the front door of the restroom to distinguish it from other doors. Things like that. Shelf Life: 5 years from the date of manufacture. In my case, it was about 4 years 7 months from the time I received it.

Red Chem Lights Aren’t Meant to be Bright
I see way too many negative comments thinking these are glow sticks for the 4th of July type events especially reviews about the red sticks. THESE ARE MEANT TO EMIT VERY LITTLE LIGHT FOR A REASON, red light is easier on the eyes which when walking around at night it means you keep more of your ability to see at night. These aren’t meant to be a significant source of light, the best uses for these are reading at night or seeing around inside your tent. Again these are not meant to be bright on purpose, please understand when buying that these are mainly meant for survival/camping and emergencies not for children to play with.

The only brand I trust
I have carried Cyalume light sticks in my survival and emergency gear for years. I refuse to buy other brands because in an emergency I need light that works the first time, every time. If there's a gas leak after a storm I want a non-sparking, safe light so I can go turn off the main. If I need to mark the location of someone who is injured I want a bright marker light that I can deploy in any context. Snap lights fit that bill and I don't think it's worth skimping on price when you need reliability. A few days ago there was a power outage and my wife pulled out two red snap lights from our emergency gear and cracked them. They lit right up and were nice and bright. But later that night I noticed that they seemed to have faded more quickly than I anticipated (our power was back on at this point). I logged on today to discover the reason why: the red snap lights were part of an order I originally placed in 2011. Yep, eleven years ago. I had missed rotating them out with my other purchases. 11 years in storage and they lit right up and were bright to start - just no legs on them. I consider that a testament to the quality and durability of Cyalume over other brands. As long as they are in business, Cyalume will be the brand I carry for emergencies. I recommend you do the same.

Not very bright
These are not very bright at all, so keep that in mind for your use case. They're good to read a map or see inside a small tent at night, but not much else.

Good - but know when to use the red
I bought the 10 pack in two colors - red and green. Based on reviews here, I went on the hypothesis that the green would be great for illumination, and red would be best for situations, such as night hiking, when I want to have a light but not have it affect night vision as much. After testing both the red and green, that is exactly how I would use these. Green: Very bright, would be great as a safe alternative to candles in the home in emergency situations (kids or pets can't knock it over and light the house on fire), or to provide illumination when hiking or camping. Would be great in the car as well for emergencies. Red: It's bright but really only provides bright illumination to itself, and not to its surroundings. It's best used as a location marker. I'd use it primarily when night hiking with other people and attaching it to their backpacks so its easy to note where they are. You could also use it when camping to mark key locations around you in the dark such as hazards and water sources. Because it doesn't illuminate its surroundings much, I think it would do a better job than the green at saving your night vision. It's use around the house in emergencies is pretty limited, probably only to mark things such as sharp corners. I activated both the red and green 12 hours ago and they're both still going. They're obviously not as bright as the first few hours but still usable. The plastic in these is pretty thick as well, and would definitely be OK with giving to kids without worrying if they'll break and spill out (even if it did, it's non-toxic). Overall, would definitely recommend these, but if you do use the red, know its limitations.

Military should have better equipment
First - I gotta say, these last a loooong time .. mine glowed for well over 12 hrs Second - not .. very .. bright - at their peak a glow stick i got from the Dollar Store was not as bright, but doable for a dollar and you get 3 WITH neck cordage which the Cyalume ones do not have One I got from Walmart was just as good as the Cyalume, BUT it was more than $1 a stick ( I got 20 Cyalume ones for $19.99 from Amazon ) I put it up against a battery on/off glow stick from Nite ize and Cyalume didnt stand a chance - Nite ize glow stick MUCH brighter AND you can turn it off when not needed I would have thought that the military would have wanted brightness over longevity, but who am I to say Cyalume glow stick might've been better had it been filled more than 60% with magic glow liquid (80% full would've been nice)- lumens people Plus I really dont think I'm gonna be needing a 12+ hr glowlight - maybe if I'm camping in a cave or something dark ( ok, winter maybe I guess ) Wrapping it up they're good for a buck apiece, but come on, how 'bout some lumens instead of hours Not a paid Amazon reviewer

No issues
Pack of 10 ordered via Contact Left Limited, delivered two days later. Genuine Cyalume products with a 4+ year use-by date (it is Feb 23 now and the use -by date is 06/27). Tested one: It took some force to snap the internal capsule, which is a good protection against accidental activation. Good red light visible from afar as a marker. Illuminates an area of about one meter. When held close to a page it is sufficient to read with. Started to fade after 13 hours. In my opinion, if you need one for a first aid kit, find a white one - there are high intensity 30 minute versions for such uses. If you need a general light, the red are best and do not affect your night vision quite so much. I only ever use Cyalume after I found that the cheaper products occasionally simply did not work when I needed them

Long lasting!
Lasted for 8-12 hours full power (rates for 12 but didnt check at the time), and for another 12-16 hours after that with minimum intensity. Still useful then if you had to mark ropes or tripping hazards in the dark! Puts out a good light amount, but not useful for reading unless pressed right against the thing youre trying to read.

Great deal!
Each chem light is individually packaged as pictured and comes boxed up, mine was pretty beat up in transit but the individual packaging definitely helped protect the lights from activating or getting damaged. I used them for a multi-day sim and they functioned flawlessly, they take a little bit of force to snap the internal vial, but light up very quickly and brightly. They also work great for lighting up a tent at night, although you might want to retain the packaging, as they do get fairly bright and short of stuffing it back into its packaging or stuffing it under something, you'll still see the glow. They lasted me the full 12 hours as stated, although past the 8-9 hr mark, they lose a significant amount of their brightness. Overall, they worked great and I still have 8 chem lights left from last year!

The Real Deal
I bought these for a Emergency Fire Escape Kit. Primarily for my elderly mother who can't get down 6 flights of stairs in her building, so she must stay on her balcony until rescue arrives. We went through a test run, and even a 62 year old can easily snap the internal vial. Opening the packaging is a little more tricky, so you should have scissors or a knife packed if you're planning on using this for any type of Emergency Kit. These are the real deal Cyalume sticks. They easily last for 12 hours, and mine maintained its brightness for pretty well the whole duration. I hope that these never have to be used these for the purpose I intend them for, but if they do, I'll know that Fire Rescue will be able to see my mother from a top-floor balcony easily now.

Impressive
I know it says these are not toys, but I have a couple to my kids to play with on a camp out this summer. They lasted well over 12 hours - in fact you could still see some light the next evening as dusk set in. They would be very useful in many emergency situations as well - they are extremely bright and after activation (which is very easy) they get bright very quickly. We got the red version and Ia very impressed with the quality.
