tl;dr This vise failed after 18 months of intermittent use, if you keep in mind that the life expectancy of the vise is 12-18 months of use and you're okay with the price it isn't a bad purchase, but you can probably do better. I purchased and have used this for a leg vise on my woodworking bench since soon after I purchased it in September of 2021. So to give you an idea, I am a newer woodworker, having only been in the hobby for the last two years. I am a weekend woodworker, typically trying to get into the shop for 6-10 hours a week to work on projects, and this vise is used during a lot of that time. For the first 12-14 months this vise worked wonderfully, it never slipped, it held perfectly. Over the last 1-2 months this vise has had more difficulty holding work against the bench. Today, the vise would no longer hold and would slip when I tried to tighten it down. When I took the vise apart, I found that the nut for the vise had been stripped by the screw. There was almost no threading left within the nut. On one hand, I'm impressed that it held work with that much threading missing, on the other hand I had expected for this vise to hold up for more than 18 months of hobby use. I suspect that the steel used in the making of this vise is exceedingly soft and gradually wore down. If I were going to purchase a vise again, I would probably make a different purchase.

A good value

I bought this for a leg vise build on a work bench. Simple installation took about ten minutes once the lumber had been cut to fit. Very stable. Came packed in protective oil. Very good value for the price

Fast, affordable option for a custom vise

This screw is faster than most metal screws, at 3 tpi. For comparison, the Veritas/Lee Valley vise screws are 5-6 tpi. This makes a big difference in how fast the vise will move. Compared to the Veritas/Lee Valley vise screw I have been using, the build quality seems about the same. I wish the Yost screw came with mounting hardware. #10 wood screws seem to work fine, and #12 screws would probably also work. If you are building a custom vise for your workbench, this is a very good option. Other metal screws the same price (e.g. Veritas/Lee Valley) are slower, nicer metal screws are much more expensive (e.g. Benchcrafted), and wooden screws are also much more expensive. This is a great choice for woodworkers on a budget.

work well

I have used it to make my wise for my work bench. I was obliged to grind a little the wise with sand paer as the edges were too sharp. I cleaned it and installed it. It is working very well.

Works OK

Works ‘OK’. Quite a bit of slop between the knob (part that turns) and the garter (the part that mounts to the front chop. But it’s fairly well built, and seems like it will last a long time. The threads are nicely cut, and don’t bind. Not sure why they make these so long? I can’t think of a use case that would require 18”. I would think the excessive length would actually make most people’s install harder. But whatever. As you can see in my pic, I used a stick for a handle. This is suppose to be temporary until I score a 1” dowel, but I actually kind of like it. I might ‘stick‘ with it. HeHe. Oh, and I found the blue color to be obnoxious. So I painted it with flat BBQ paint.

Worked for a tail vise, but perhaps a simpler fit for leg vise

When I bought this, I didn't have a clear plan how I'd make my tail vise. I came up with this simple design that worked out very well, the screw itself works nicely, but remember that this is just the metal of a much larger DIY project. As a wagon vise, I had to scratch my head a lot on how to leave the gap free from the big screw (for vertical clamping). It's certainly not the most compact under the workbench, but the screw won't pertrude when the vise is open, which is good for tight workshop. For a leg vise, this item would have been way more straightforward for a beginner like me. Note that you can get the same screw from Shop Fox and Lee Valley, this looks like a Chinese OEM made branded as Yost.

Surprisingly good quality

For this price I expected some really rough product - what I got was considerably better. The screw is highly polished, there is a slight burr left over but will go away with use. The only point where one might have to intervene, is in the interior of the short tube that houses the handle - you might want to sand this a little bit so that the handle moves smoothly. Very sturdy, highly recommended.

Ideal for workbench leg vise.

I was Looking for a screw for my home made Roubo workbench leg vise. This product was cheaper than most others I found and looked exactly the same. It is a heavy duty screw and should stand up to many years of use. Would recommend it for this type of project.
