Massive and easy to use
I've been using an electric charcoal lighter for a few years and prefer them over other means of starting charcoal. I have an "egg" style grill that has a door for use with electric charcoal starters. This product is too wide and doesn't fit through the door. I used it from the top and now prefer to use it this way. I didn't have an issue with the handle melting or even getting hot. The handle sits above the coal bowl and not exposed to too much heat. I place a layer of coals on the bottom and then make a mound to cover the elements on the top. In about 10 minutes, the coals are hot enough to take the starter out and let the coals get hotter on their own. Good product and customer support .

Powerful and works fast
This is an excellent fire starter for everyday grilling. I have a 22 inch Weber kettle grill, and I always used a Weber chimney to light the charlcoal for it, but I could never fit quite enough charcoal in it to get a lot of heat. Besides, the chimney always burnt my fingers, unless I put thick gloves on. This electric device is a game changer - it lights a full load of charcoal directly inside the grill in mere 20 minutes, eliminating the need to juggle a glowing-hot chimney and get my fingers burnt. The only modification I made is that I wrapped some aluminium foil around the plastic handle to increase its longevity, because I like my grill really HOT and I use a lot of charcoal at once - it puts a great sear on your steaks. Thanks to this device, I reconsidered buying a kamado-style grill ($1200 and up), because now I can get all the heat I need for my grilling from a simple kettle grill. There is no way this purchase could be a better value.

Seems to be fine
Seems to work fine. The strain relief, where the cable enters the handle, seems cheap- and I am worried it will fail within 6-12 months. The plug also seems cheap- I am worried that the ground prong is going to bend/break off. The plastic which the handle is made from also feels cheap. I think it lights a bbq in 7-12 minutes. Smoke billows from the pile of coals; but usually there is no flame. I prefer using this electric-element, to a chimney. I have used it with briquettes and lump. I wouldn't mind the quality, if it cost less. But for the price, I feel like it should use higher quality materials, and I can understand someone being annoyed upon receival. I hope it will last >7 years, stored in a cabinet, away from the elements. I have not used a wand (torch-style, that you plug in, and blow hot air at the coals). My assumption was that it would blow ash out of the bbq and onto the surroundings, making a bigger mess that an electric-element style would. I chose this particular model, because it seemed to have the most surface area. It also sits upright on its own (I clear a spot in the bbq. I set this lighter in place. I pile coals on top of it. I plug it in. I do not need to brace/support it.)

GAME CHANGER!
First, the pictures don't do this device justice. It is big, meaning it covers a ton of charcoal. Just follow the directions: I place it on top of a layer of charcoal, stack additional charcoal, then plug it in. These photos span a total of ten minutes from plugging the starter in to lit coals. No more fuel-based fire starters, messy chimney starters, or worst of all lighting fluid. This thing is fantastic, highly recommend.

It's not your ordinary lighter
We have two good sized grills, one ceramic and one Kamodo style. This starter is large, almost prohibitably so. Does heat the lump, fairly quickly. But, number of loops on the element might be prone to failure. We'll see, had it two months, no issues to date. Bottom line, if you have a large grill .. this will do the trick nicely. If you are cooking on a smaller platform, look for one with not so many loops incorporated into the design.

Do not buy for Green Egg
This is too short for a green egg. Plastic handel is down in the coal pit. The higher wattage doesnt seem to start any quicker than the lower wattage. Used probably a dozen times now it trips the GFI. Had to throw away. Going back to a torch mapp gass torch.

Good but short
Good igniter and I would give it 5 except it is too short in length for a green egg. Has to be watched closely because once the flame starts it will melt the handle if not quickly removed.
