Hard to review ...
CONSIDERING the price point, there should be reasonable expectations on the product. You should expect to do some flattening, polishing, breaking rough edged, sharpening blade and even some filing if things do not fit well. You should also expect the adjuster to have a fair amount of backlash and the lateral adjustment be finicky. I know that, I have bought SnJ planes before and I still like them. HAVING SAID THAT, my plane has 2 main issues that I would have expected not to be there, 1. The mouth is VERY OPEN, in the fully closed position it is 5 mm wide (fully open is 9mm wide). And since the blade protrudes ~2mm for a light shaving from the back of the mouth, that still leaves AT LEAST 3 mm of open space in front of the blade. I cannot imagine needing to open the mouth more than 3mm in front of a blade ever (this is not a scrub plane ...). 2. Blade steel is very bad. I am not sure if this is a quality control issue, where my specific blade was not tempered correctly, but the steel feels extremely soft and is not able to hold an edge (There is also a lot of chipping happening even when sharpening with a honing guide on water stones). In the future I will get an after-market blade (which will probably cost more than this plane ...), but right now it is working for me because I ask from the tool what the tool can provide.

WOW, WOW, WOW - Very High quality for the money
Amazing for what it cost. Was expecting cheap Chinese quality, but was surprised. Everything was well made and was of high quality. The block plane is very comfortable to use, produced clean uniform shavings. Wood buy again (pun intended)

Decent affordable plane but for the cutter
The cutter needed flattening, sharpening, and honing as expected, and the sole needed significant work to flatten. The parts of the block plane work reasonably well, and I would be happy if it weren’t for the brittleness of the cutter. Cumulatively, I used the plane for no more than an hour (on pine, no less!) and the cutter is chipped across the edge. There’s something zen about sharpening, but that’s just not workable.

Perfect
Does exactly what it supposed to do at a great price. Go ahead and pull the trigger.

Nice Block Plane that needed some adjusting to get those long shaves.
This is an item from the Amazon Warehouse and was received in good condition with all parts in working condition. The sole was flat and not marred. This was a good buy.

Great for the money
Got this to shave down a door I install in an entryway they was sticking, worked like a charm. I see a lot of people whining about it but don’t let that deter you. You have to set it up correctly to have it work right, which mainly involves making sure the blade is seated right. The shoe was a bit beveled at the front and back but that had no impact on the majority of the cutting surface which was perfectly flat. After taking 2 mins to make sure it was adjusted correctly, I was getting nice long shaves off a pine door, def a win for the price. I don’t know if it’s up to par for someone who’s planing wood every day, but for those of you who will use it intermittently here and there, definitely go for it.

Good value, But.....
This plane perfoms well enough for the purchase price, but, it required substantial tuning and sharpening after unboxing. Time will tell about edge retention of the iron.

Plane &simple
Good little plane purchased for edge of door shaping in situ. Winter time and this door always swells making it hard to close. Accurate cutting after adjustment, blade didnt stay sharp as long as I expected on a pine door. Not a biggie, but you know its not the hardest edge and requires a honing session. Worth the money with a free £5 off voucher. Wouldn't pay full price, I'd go for the nine inch version.

Better than most low cost planes
Needed a block plane to fit a couple of doors and didn’t want to spend a fortune. Having read how bad some of these cheaper planes can be I was happily surprised by how good this one is. It did the job without any extra fettling which should make it even better

Six and a quarter inch
Amazon's dimensions are correct: 17.5 cm × 4.5 cm × 7 cm. Its name is "No. 9 1/2", it's not a 9.5 inch plane. 17.5 cm is six and a quarter inches plus an adjustment knob. I'm not sure about precision ground faces, they were covered with an anti-rust lacquer which came off in 20 minutes with a stanley blade, and then took some wet & dry. Whatever, I didn't have to skim them... The blade came straight out for a refurb: the edge was rough -- wavy and chipped but not burred -- and looking as though it had come off second best in a fight with a grinder. 90 minutes of reprofiling and honing went by before I even considered trying it out. Now it shaves sausage skins off ikea spruce. Although the description is unequivocal and the manufacturer' packaging looked genuine, the logo on the side of the plane was a badly misprinted, peeling label. That, with the low standard of the blade, makes me wonder how much outsourcing S&J are doing in China. Still, it's cheap, easy to use and took less than two hours to set right and now I have a good little mini block plane.
