Great set with minor set backs

I tried canning for the first time this year, and it was great fun. I found the link to the Nopro set on pickyourown.org, and since I was just starting out with water bath canning, I decided to get the set. I try to stay away from using too many plastic items in the kitchen,so I absolutely love the two stainless steel funnels. The wide mouth one is especially irreplaceable. It works great on wide mouth and regular jars. The lid rack is the least useful item. It's a neat idea, but you need a much larger pot for sterilizing lids than if you just throw them in. With the wand, you don't even need a lid holder. The jar lifter is possibly the most crucial item, and it's wonderful and works like a charm. I've used it on wide mouth and regular jars, with equally excellent results. My finger tips are greatful. As for the rack, well I'm a bit disappointed in it. First of all it is 12 inches in diameter, so I had to buy a 20 gallon pot for it. That's ok though since I was able to fit 7 pint or quart jars successfully in it. However, I can't fit smaller jars on it, and that's disappointing. I made 4 half pints of apple butter this weekend and had to get a new rack because the jars were too small and fell through this rack. The rack also started to rust right away, which was dissappointing. All of this I can live with though. I saw the same rack on sale at a hardware store... Bottom line is that you can probably get these items separately and maybe save a little bit of money, but for those looking to just get started, this is a great set.

Home Canning Set

I purchased this home canning set as a Christmas gift for my daughter and her husband who are planning on trying their hand at canning this coming summer. They live in another state so I had to wait until they got to come home to open their gifts. That is why it has taken me a while to write this review. They both got a kick out of this home canning set. My mom passed away in January 2010 and she was from TN so she canned all of her life. When I had to clean her house out I saved one of her pressure canners for my daugther and her husband and I had a very enjoyable time finding little things to go with the canner. We all had a fun time with this particular gift because, as it turned out, the wire basket that comes with this set is the same exact size as the opening of the canner. There is a "tray" in the bottom of Mom's canner that takes the place of the wire basket. I received this in the mail and realized the wire basket isn't needed with the canner I had saved for them. I then compared prices to see if I purchased all of the other items separately which is more economical. I found that it was actually less expensive to keep this set than it would be to buy the other 6 pieces separately. They definitely enjoyed getting this set and all of the other "stuff" I purchased on Amazon.com for their canning endeavor.

A good choice for all your basic canning items - pleased!

I purchased this after buying a cheap set of Ball tools from the grocery store because I was in a hurry initially. Well, the jar lifter in the Ball set had defective plastic on the grabber parts that melted down to the metal the very first time I used it. A little ridiculous, considering it was meant for use in a hot situation. This jar lifter works much better and the coating held up just fine. I also love the stainless funnels and the fact that I got 2, one with the strainer. The first rack I got from another brand also fell apart upon first use - literally with the first load one of the welds came undone and the jars all went crashing into the hot water. This one did fine and seems solid. I just took one star away because the jars don't seem to sit entirely securely in it, and I'm sure that smaller jars will sit a little more crooked. I'll probably still get another one in the long run but this will do the job for now. I'll be canning a LOT next summer and I'm happy to have everything I need now. This was a good value, especially with the super saver shipping.

Great for the price!

Everything you need to start your canning career! plus a little extra... I don't see all of the items included as being totally necessary for canning.. the magnetic lid wand for example.. never used it... never needed to the lid rack... just more junk to clutter the cabinet.. and your sterilizing pot the funnels are great... i only use one though... the strainer funnel is ok.. but just doesnt work well for me.. the can tongs are useful for grabbing hot cans out of hot water/steam. a must have. i use the cheesecloth for making cheese.... not canning... but useful non the less... and the rack... i use the rack that came with my canning pot.. its reversible for steam or water baths.. and i like it much better than this one.. this one does hold 7 pint jars.. so thats nice I wish I had done some homework as to what exactly I needed so I didn't waste money on tools that I dont need... The quality of everything is top notch though.. The 4 star rating would be 5 stars if the amount of extra not-so-useful stuff was... well, useful... and the design of the rack was as user friendly as a similar comparable one.

good canning set of accessorites

I like the set overall and pleased with my purchase. I wish it had the plastic piece for getting out the airbubbles, but have been using a plastic spatula instead. Also, there is one more type of jar grabber that it doesn't come with, but I've been canning just fine without it. My most used items are the jar grabber, lid stacker and the magnet lid lifter. It's nice to have the other items just in case I need them though later. Items were of good quality - just like what I'd buy individually at my local farm store and I think I saved money buying it all as a set. I think the lid rack alone was almost $10. The one funnel has an insert for a strainer. I don't know if I'll ever use that one since I have a food mill, but we'll see. And the rack, while other postings indicated it was large, did fit inside my water bath unit. I think its the same rack that my local farm store sells - not sure if you can get the extra sturdy ones or not, but my old one had work out so I guess it will work for now. It definitely doesn't fit in my American Canner, but that came with racks so its not necessary.
