Missing suction cup mounts.
Love the dial on the front for viewing the setting. Seems to work as expected. My issue was that there were NO SUCTION CUP MOUNTING BRACKETS in my box. The heater works great and PennPlax is a brand I trust. But back to my issue. Considering the unit doesn't have the rubber tip protector on the end like most heaters, the lack of ability to secure it was very worrisome. For me this was extremely frustrating due to a separate issue I was having. I ended up holding it in place with fishing line until my additional purchase of suction cups arrived. I was afraid I would wake up and find the heater floating and the line melted. The line seemed to withstand the heat and today I actually mounted it securely with the suction brackets I ordered. In fairness to PennPlax I did not reach out to them. Amazon wanted me to return the whole unit which for survival of my fish, I could not do. I figured it would be a hassle to track down Pennplax. I just wanted to get this done and move on as time was of the essence. [SEPARATE ISSUE: I bought a new aquarium kit which had a defective heater. (Not this brand heater.) I purchased this heater out of necessity to keep fish warm while my other heater was returned under warranty. I needed this heater to be ready to go. Without SUCTION CUPS it wasn't. I reached out to Amazon for the suction cups and they wanted the whole heater returned and would send a replacement. I would again be without a heater. So for the $20 it cost to ship my tetra heater back, plus the $20 for this heater & an additional $7 for suction cups I've blown another $50.] If you want a heater this one is good and fine but if you are like me and in a pickle you may not be ready to go out of the box in a pinch.

Edited to reflect new information
Edit: Ms. Wright contacted me and explained that my email had started going to her spam folder. She is sending a replacement heater. Since my main issue was with customer service (the heater did quit working but warranty is being honored), I've updated this review to 4 stars for it being a great heater when it was working. Original review: Heater quit working and is under warranty. Customer service (Daina Wright) gave me the run around. I sent a copy of my receipt, agreed to pay $10 shipping, and she refused to send the replacement without explanation.

Pretty great with MINOR flaws
I purchased this heater about 2.5 weeks ago and overall I think it’s a great heater for the money. This is one of the only heaters I saw on amazon that didn’t “cook a fish”. When I first received it, it was a little bigger than expected, but that’s not really a huge problem for me. I have it in a 3 gallon tank for my betta fish & it doesn’t take up too much room. I have it positioned sideways on the back of his tank mid-way down. I’ve had my betta since January and honestly never bought a heater for him until I bought this one, so I was hesitant at first to set it all the way to even 80 degrees. At first, I set it to 76 degrees just to not give him a huge temperature shock (Before, the tank was around 72 degrees, which I know, not great for a betta...) I kept it on 76 for the first few hours then I turned the dial up to 79. I’m aware that bettas need water anywhere from 76-83 degrees. The thermometer itself does a great job heating the tank, and will turn itself on & off to adjust it when needed. In the past week or so, I’ve realized that my thermometer is set to 79, and I got a digital thermometer that I stick on the outside of the tank, and it reads about 77.7 degrees. In my opinion, this is way better than having a thermometer heat it up too much and killing your fish. I have it set now to 81, and my digital thermometer reads about 79.8 and will fluctuate between 79.8 & 78.6. For me, this is perfect for my fish. If I wanted to I could probably turn it all the way up to 82 & it would set at about 79.9-81.5, but I haven’t done that yet. Overall, I think this is a great heater. It definitely will not over heat your fish. The temperature settings on the thermometer range from 68-89 degrees. I’d recommend starting off lower than what you need just to gauge how well the thermometer works in your tank. It’s a little off, maybe about 1.5-2 degrees from what you set it, but I’d just get a digital thermometer that sticks on the side of your tank to double-check the temperature. I’d definitely give this heater a try!! :)

Does its job, easy to use!
This is the second heater I bought for my 3gal tank. The first one was useless. I use a separate thermometer for an accurate temp reading and the water is always within the range it's set to. I like that you can easily change the temperature with the red knob. My betta fish loves it and can often be found snuggling up near it. I've had it for 5 months and it continues to work well. It's also easy to clean.

Amazing heater untill now
So I've used this brand of heaters for the last 8 years problem free . Durable and usually no issues that age and time wouldn't bring . I actually have 6 of them at various watts that seem great over the past 3 to 6 years . I bought 2 of the 300 watt heaters over the past years and a half . The first one stopped working in just over a year , thought no big deal your bound to get a dud once in a while so I replaced it since I didn't have the time to get one through the 3 year warranty the company offers . So using the second one I bought 6 months ago I go to feed my fish and see 8 dead fish floating in my tank and thinking what the heck ? I grab my net to scoop them out and the water is atleast 38 c the dam heater got stuck on killing my fish . Now Amazon won't replace either heater and said I have to get ahold of the company that makes them . I'm so pissed . I'm not sure what happened the quality of this manufacturer over the last few years but I can't recommend them anymore .

Great for my 5 gallon betta tank
Great little heater for up to a 5 gallon tank. Could easily heat a 10 gallon with two of these placed on opposite sides of the tank. The power draw is minimal while the heater is inactive, my hydro bill went up by less than 50 cents total for the month, and that is with adding a bio-filter on top of this heater. According to my tank thermometer, this little guy heats to within 1C of accuracy. Impressive, considering the radiators in my apartment are very inconsistent for the ambient room temp. The suction cups tend to slide around when you adjust the temp dial, but I have not yet had any issues with the heater actually falling off the tank glass.

Small but efficient and accurate.
Bought this for a 6 gallon Fluval Edge aquarium. Tank called for a 25watt and had previously purchased a Fluval P25 preset heater. It did not shut off and couldn't get 6 gallons higher than 74.5F. It was just not enough. Having a 8" height restriction and wanting a fully adjustable heater, my options were limited. Was originally looking for a Hydor 50 watt, but they are on a global backorder and not available. I have previously had very good luck with Penn Plax Cascade in tank filters and decided to go with this Cascade heater as well. Keeps the water at temp without issue. Temp dial is a little tight but does work all the same. If you need a small heater with reliable temperature control this will take care of your needs.

Doesn't work.
Bought this for a 2.5 Gallon tank... I'm incredibly upset with this purchase, usually I go for Hydor heaters as there reliable but tend to like Penn-Plax's brand of items... My tank doesn't heat at all, and so my fish sits in freezing cold water which is horrible due to the fact that it's almost winter so the water is as if it's from the freezer. Extremely unsatisfied with this purchase. I recommend just going for a Hydor for a few more extra dollars and you'll never have a SINGLE problem. Before I even turned on the heater/plugged it in, I let it sit in the water for 2 hours before plugging it ... No luck.
