Potential Fire Danger If Tip Over Protection Circumvented. Restrictive Airflow/Overheat Safety ?.
I'm updating this review after having spoken with a manager. He understood my concerns, and offered a replacement with a model that uses the style of tip over protection our original unit has (in fact, its very like our original heater). I may take them up on this. But since that conversation, I've looked at this heater more closely, and while my concern is still there, its not as urgent as it was. This unit has a very stable base. It is very difficult to knock over. When we checked it out further, even though you can cause it to come back on once tipped over by pressing in the plunger button, there seems to be little heat. We need to test this out further. In use, it heats the space well. We were in subfreezing temperatures, snow and ice, in our RV for a few days. We used this during the day, and pretty much saved the propane furnace for the night. (We did have the furnance on during the day, but it was never triggered by the thermostat as the Vornado kept things comfortable.) We didn't even need to run the Vornado at full power. We are talking about a 38ft class A and it was comfortable from front to back. So I have to say, other than the tip over protection concern (a situation unlikely to gappen, but you don't want to be that 1 in a thousand), I am impressed with this unit. Need to test the restrictive airflow/overheat feature a bit more. If that really is not working, I'm getting this replaced. ORIGINAL REVIEW - tempered: I have been a customer of Vornado, using a heater and fans, for 2 decades. I always felt I could trust the safety features of their units to protect me and my property against mishaps caused by space heaters, such as preventing a fire if the heater is tipped over. But I question this design.. Vornado has changed the way the tip over cutoff function works. Now there is a plunger button on the bottom that is pressed in when sitting on a surface. While that plunger-style button is pressed in, the unit will operate. When the unit is tipped over or picked up, there is no longer anything pushing on the plunger button from underneath, so it falls back down and all current us cut off. The unit stops working. BUT: If, WHILE THE UNIT IS LYING FACE DOWN after being tipped over, someone or something presses that plunger button back in, THE HEATER TURNS BACK ON forcing heated air against your carpet, floor, spilled papers, or other flammable material. So what happens if a child or a pet tips this over, and manages to lodge something against the button that then keeps it pressed in, allowing the heater to continue pumping out heated air against whatever flammable it fell onto? Why is this not designed to keep the heater turned off until it is returned to an upright position? We have another, smaller, much cheaper no-name brand forced air space heater that has a plunger button on the bottom as well, which works the same way, BUT THIS little heater ALSO DISENGAGES the plunger button while tipped over. If you press it in while it is tipped over, nothing happens. It does not turn back on until it is fully upright again.. THAT is a PROPER tip over protection feature. I do not need to worry about our dog, or other mishap, circumventing the tip over protection feature. When I contacted the Vornado company about this, the initial person I spoke with seemed entirely unconcerned about the possibility their tip over safety feature could be so easily circumvented. He considered it such a remote possibility as to be improbable, and told me this plunger button is working as intended. He also said that the restrictive airflow/overheating protection would kick in and shut off the unit if somehow my scenario occured. How hot would things get before it shut off? He never told me. Would there be damage before it shut off? Would my carpet get scorched? My linolium discolored? What if the overheat feature failed? So I tested that feature. When I placed a towel over the back of the unit to block its air intake, it continued to run, and very quickly there was a burning smell. It never shut off. That feature didn't seem to work at all. So much for relying on this secondary backup safety cutoff. The cheap, little off-brand heater we bought to help get us through some very cold days, before this arrived, hands down wins in the safety department, and this Vornado (and I assume all modern Vornado heaters) falls prettumy far behind. If a little, cheap no-name heater manufacturer could foresee that the plunger button would need to be COMPLETELY disabled unless upright, and implemented such a solution, then Vornado most DEFINITELY can do so too in order to ensure no accidents can occur. BUT VORNADO CHOOSES NOT TO. I will no longer be a customer until this changes. Anyone who owns a Vornado heater with this feature, test this out for yourself, and then decide if it is worth the risk of damage or fire.

Decent heater that failed. [Updated 2023]
[Updated information/Review] So i worked with Vornado on a return and they were relatively prompt in responding to me. It did take them a few days longer than I would have liked, but once the correspondence was going it was clear and straight forward. They have honored the 5 year warranty, which I am thrilled with and are shipping me a new replacement unit without any problems. I do want to say this definitely improved my opinion of them once the correspondence with the replacement was underway. I think their instructions were clear and their service dept was good. Based on this experience, I'd happily recommend them to others to consider. If the unit fails within the 5 year window, they are standing behind their products and you really can't ask much more than that. I'm changing the rating to a 4/5 as I think this accurately reflects the value I received. I would recommend them due to this experience in the future. ----------------------------- So we purchased this heater for a guest bedroom and it appeared to work for the first year or so without issue. It appears as of end of 2022, the unit has a failed fan on it now. It doesn't seem to heat any longer, which is good if the fan is no longer working properly, so the safety aspect is well implemented. However the fact I have 2 lasko heaters that have survived over 10 years without issues makes this heater seem very very cheap indeed. The Fan specifically appears to have failed and the unit does come with a 5-yr warranty according to Amazon's PDF details. I'm reaching out to the help@vornado.com team for assistance and we'll see how the RMA (or RA process as they say) works with them. I'm hopeful vornado will stand behind their product and provide a replacement/refurb unit if possible. Otherwise, I may look back to Lasko for something more robust. Its unfortunate too as this product comes highly recommended on many review sites, and it has really dinged my willingness to believe wirecutter or other sites. I think maybe Reddit is starting to look like a much more realistic review site where honest details are posted. Would be curious to know how others here on Amazon have found this purchase as it does rate quite highly and maybe I'm just the one who got a bad unit?

Worth the Splurge
I live in an older apartment building downtown and the AC is determined by the complex. It can get as cold as 65 degrees F. This works perfectly in my 500 ft studio Apt and will keep the temp exactly where I want it with ease. Great safety features. Very happy with this product.

Works as advertised
We replaced our original unit when it finally wore out. We bought 2 this time. We use them in our basement rec rooms to take the chill out of the air. We are able to raise the floor temperature from 67 degrees by 2-3 degrees taking the chill away. We are happy with the performance of the units.

Love these quiet and safe heaters!
I have 3 of these! They are quiet, have the good safety features, and have a nice design. I love that you can set the temp exactly (not a dial to get it close) and that it is so quiet. None of that clicking on and off through the night.

Superior product on the market
This is my 2nd Vornado heater. Selected by Wirecutter as best of the lot, this compact heater heats up a room quickly. It's every bit as touted by the advertised product description. I have used it for over a month to replace the propane radiant heat source in the house and it has saved me oodles of money. It's quiet and efficient. One more note, the warranty and the claim process is best of class in the industry. My previous purchase had a problem and after an online verification process, I got one delivered by Fedex in 2 days! Thank you Vornado.

The most amazing heater!
We live in an older home, and our youngest child's room sits over an open porch while also being the furthest room from the furnace. This room can get uncomfortably cold in the winter, and become unbearable for an infant/small child who can't have heavy blankets to keep warm. Since I don't want my kid sleeping in my room until they're a teenager, I needed to find a space heater that was effective and exceptionally safe. The Vornado was highly rated across nearly every parenting website that I scoured for child-friendly heaters. The "vortex action" airflow is fantastic at evenly heating the WHOLE room, not just blasting intense hot air at the one spot its pointed. Pair this with the built in thermostat, and you never have to worry about the room becoming an unexpected spa-and-sauna in your home The safety features are what really drew me to this heater, and they have surpassed my expectations. If the heater tips even in the slightest, it turns off. We haven't had to use the overheat feature luckily, but I have no doubt that it would work quickly as well. Best of all, it's truly not hot to the touch at ALL. This was one of the biggest concerns as both our kids are young and curious so we knew it was going to get little hands on it at some point, regardless of how well supervised they were. It's incredibly quiet when it turns on; we can't tell through the monitor when it turns on and off, and it's never once disturbed our child and woken them. We love this heater so much that we are getting rid of other space heaters and replacing them all with this. Well worth the money for all the features, peace of mind and effectiveness. Save yourself the headache of buying the $20 box store special heater that breaks (or burns) after a few uses and invest in the Vornado. You absolutely won't regret it.

Quiet but not that Quiet - Baby Room Use - Cannot Set Temperature
We got this heater with the intent of using it in the baby's room which is not much more in size than a den. The heater is one of the quietest fan heaters I've ever heard so would fare well in say a garage or larger room but in the baby's room the fan noise echoed. Here's a Pro and Con list: Pro: - Very quiet when used in medium/large room - Spreads heat gently rather than blasting it at you - Fast delivery (thank you Prime) - Tip-over safety switch works fantastically well - Cable comes out the back of the unit (very rare on heaters but practical) good cord length - Cool to the touch at all times Con: - On high wattage setting gives off smell similar to a hot hair dryer - Run in garage or other non used area for about 6h to burn off the new heater smell - Fan is loud in small room - Thermostat is finicky and does not reliably keep room at same temperature (keeps it at about 5F range) - No thermostat that you can enter a specific temperature on

Not the quickest/most powerful, just the best
A superb heater. Perfect.

Very quiet, very effective
It's not quite the type that you can sit in front of to get warm, but it will warm the room well. The temperature sneaks up on you. Great trip switch too. Only issue is that the unit does not accurately read the current temperature.

Horrible smell!
Right out of the box even before plugging it in, I could detect a chemical smell of some kind. I then plugged it in and ran it, the smell was ten times worse...a pungent chemical smell, not really plastic or paint but a strong chemical smell. I returned it immediately. I had also ordered at the same time, the Lasko 5309 Electronic Oscillating Tower Heater, Digital Controls Silver 5309, to see which one I would like. The Lasko is a much better heater, it throws really hot air, is very quiet and has way more features than the Vornado. I am keeping that one, it is amazing! :)
