Better than expected.

This fire box basket has a lot thicker steel on the box and grate than I expected. Great buy and worked like a champ. Makes cleaning out the side fire box on my off set a breeze. All the ashes are contained in the box itself so just pull it out dump it and your good to go for the next cook.

Modifications needed

Yes, as some people write in reviews, it works fine for a cook lasting of only a few hours like maybe 3-4. However, if you’re going to cook all night long like 12-15 hrs, it needs modifications. The ash build up will eventually be too much for fire to ventilate properly. Before I used it, I took and drilled five 1/2” ventilation holes on each side and then took my grinder and cut out four 1/2” x 3” slits so ash would fall out. That worked for a 12 hr smoke that I did. I will be adding to more openings for ash fall out on bottom and and sides for longer cooks. The grating that came it works awesome when inserted in the box as designed! I may just frame up the grating with a welder and some steel and see how that works by itself.

Utterly useless unless heavily modified

Bought this to use in my Char-Griller offset smoker (which can be used as either a smoker or grill) because the dimensions make it fit in both the main cooking compartment and the firebox darn near perfect. While it does technically fit in either the firebox or the grill area, once you pour in a chimney full of hot coals, this thing extinguishes them into a smoldering pile of worthlessness in seconds as soon as you close the lid. THERE ARE NO VENTILATION HOLES, FOLKS! (I'll admit it, I ordered this thing late at night after a few beers and didn't consider that one crucial detail at the time - I was more focused on the size measurements and whether it would fit in my offset smoker.) What are the three things you need to make fire? Fuel, heat (ignition), and AIR. Guess what this rectangular cube lacks on all but one side? Any means of bringing in oxygen to keep the fire going! Take a look at virtually ANY charcoal box on the market and they're riddled with holes because, duh, fire needs air in order to burn. This thing is barely anything more than a .50 caliber ammo can with a nice paintjob and a U-shaped wire basket dropped in there. Even with the chimney wide open, this thing wouldn't even get the temp up to 225 because the coals were getting snuffed out from a total lack of available airflow. Easy to clean? Sure! Take that pile of coals that have suffocated and turned cold in this box, turn the thing upside down directly into your firebox, throw some more coals on there, blow on it like crazy with a fan to reignite them, and then place this thing underneath your grill where it does nothing but hold tongs and such. It's cleaned out and it stays clean! Mine still looks like new because I struggled to use it for all of maybe an hour before giving up on it and going back to my other improvised method (take the two grill grates of the firebox, arrange them in a V-shape on top of the charcoal grate, and then put your coals on THAT - works just fine). I can't return it at this point, so I'm thinking of just drilling a bunch of large holes in it and then seeing how well it works then and how long it holds up to regular use. I'll admit, it's thick steel and welded up nicely, and the wire basket is also some thick steel that seems well-made, but once that nice paintjob on the box has holes drilled through it, I doubt it's going to have much corrosion resistance for long afterward. I guess we'll see how it fares. Just not wild about spending twice as much on what amounts to an ammo can without a hinged lid - I would've had to do about the same amount of modification to get the same results, really.

This made my Judge into an offset smoker

This maintained the temperature very easily. With the use of the bottom vent you can raise or lower the temperature. I'm very happy with this.

short learning curve and really did a great job providing smoke without messing the entire grill up. Good price for what you get.

Works well

I lit a small chimney of lump charcoal, then dumped it into basket and set a mini split log on top, works perfectly and airflow is sufficient to have a nice slow burn for smoking meat.

Great Product - Used to Control Heat

This is a great product. I did not buy it for its intended purpose. I bought it to modify for a Lang reverse offset smoker. I use it to cook at a very specific temperature and within a very specific temperature range. The internal mesh basket has hooks that fit perfectly on a Lang fire box. I use the metal box for storage.
