Great Vacation Home for my Rescue Mouse!
Intent on stepping out of the frigid Northern Illinois Winter Wonderland, a single field mouse found his way into my house. Not having the intent on harming him, I got a humane mouse trap and caught him with a small dab of peanut butter on the trap lever. I highly doubt he would have survived if I just let him go in such brutal weather, so I decided I would keep him safe and sound until Springtime when I will release him in a forest near my house. So, I needed a safehouse for him in the meantime and did a lot of research on cage options. This cage was about the best option I found to get up and running for him quickly. And now I have the option to use it for domesticated pet mice in the future if I decide to continue the hobby after I release this one. The cage is great for mice for several reasons. I can't really comment on its use for larger rodents, like hamsters but I have seen far smaller cages used for hamsters on this site. PROS -- The width of the wire is a quarter inch (0.25" in.) so he cannot escape and/or get stuck in the wire. -- The lower part of the cage is made of plastic and is nearly 5" deep so I can add a lot of bedding material, since mice love to tunnel and hide during the day while they sleep. I cut down paper towel rolls and stick them in various places, and he likes to tunnel in them as if he is living in nest underground. -- There is no way any of the bedding gets kicked out of the cage onto my floor. -- The lower part of the cage is like a storage bin and is totally open which will make cleaning it easy. -- The top fits on snugly but is easily opened with two clips on the far ends of the cage. -- The cage has an opening for tubes on one end that can be closed off or opened to add plastic tubing kits (sold separately). -- The little feeding bowl is functional. -- Although my mouse doesn't use the little house to sleep, I use it to hide treats since he likes to forage when he wakes up. CONS -- As other reviews have suggested (and my experience confirmed), the water bottle is useless and should be upgraded. It's too small and doesn't work. This upgrade is no big deal since Amazon sells a great one for only about $6. -- Accessory tubing kits are expensive for pieces of plastic and proprietary. This cage uses the Ferplast brand (or compatible brands) and isn't interchangeable with most tubes kits. From other reviews, and in my own experience, this kit was the best value option if you want more than just a handful of tubes from Ferplast. Although still pricey, the 94 piece set from GNB PET for $40.00 seems like the best option. -- The top access opening is a bit small and might be a challenge for a kid to use on a regular basis. -- The cage comes with a running wheel that directly attaches to the cage in the big opening you can see in the pictures. However, the quality of the wheel is ok, not great. Plus, it's small, even for a mouse. (I upgraded the wheel with a small sized NiteAngel for $30 that fits well and is easy for him to spin. I just move the bedding away from the wheel and the bedding does not get caught under the wheel, which spins freely.) I trained him to use the wheel in a couple of days by putting very small dabs of peanut butter on opposite sides inside the wheel so he would walk on it to get the peanut butter. Eventually he just began running on it in the middle of the night. The new NiteAngel wheel is so silent that I could not tell if he was using it, so I put in a few pieces of bird seed inside the wheel. The second morning around 6:00 a.m., I knew he was using it because I could hear the bird seed rolling around as he got his gym exercise. Just a couple of general notes from a new foster mouse parent. Despite what I read about mice getting the majority of their water from their solid food, my little guy wakes up every evening and heads to the water bottle for a sip or two before he starts his night. Since his temporary home is so small to his previous world, I keep him busy by changing up the cage with various things like a small paper cup, pieces of paper towel, a little fort made of a sheet of paper, and I hide treats that he has to find (which he always does.) Overall, I highly recommend this cage for any mouse caretaker, even if it's temporary.

Bad Wheel & Small Opening, but Basic, Spacious, and Unique
Ok so the other reviewers covered the basics and they’re correct: 1: terrible wheel, horrible for any small animal. Get a better one - I have a 9 inch yellow silent spinner, fits well within the space allotted for a wheel. 2: my water bottle works… for now. I have a bowl in there just in case, and I check it every day or so. 3: small opening. Yeah, the whole cage top is easily removable, but the top door opening is like 5x4 inches, so just enough to fit an average hand and forearm… you can move stuff around on the top level, but forget being able to do anything underneath without taking the cage apart. So, spot cleaning underneath isn’t a choice unless you want to take everything apart. This would be my top complaint. The entire thing is easy enough to assemble and disassemble, but perhaps and optional half-platform to increase access to the bottom as well as a bigger door opening on top, or side door even.. Overall the cage is good quality and pretty spacious, I have a Syrian so I added some attachments to add space. And I’m planning to try a wooden half-platform instead of the plastic full one this comes with to add even more space for bedding and hideouts, while also increasing her standing room. I’m hoping the cage remains secure without the middle platform but that remains to be seen. I can’t comment on chew proof because mine hasn’t tried, but I’d recommend lots of toy chews and sprinkling food throughout so that there’s always something to draw attention away from chewing at the cage or bottom bin… The pictures are from different times, some before I added the top Ferplast lookout piece, which she loves! I also have a separate Ferplast setup for a Dwarf (kept separately obviously, but that’s why you see additional tubes to the left).

Great for hamsters large and small!
Overall, a great cage for an adult Syrian hamster! Probably even more fantastic for miniature hamsters, gerbils and mice. This cage was the best option available. In looking at the Ferplast website, there are many others I wish were available in the US. The overall habitat needed some additions and tweaking but any residence of any type needs that. The combination of the 2 Ferplast cages provides 532.5sq inches which exceeds the minimum hamster space requirements. My hamster frequently runs back and forth between the two, sometimes moving food from one food bowl to another (even though they’re both full, lol) so she seems to be happy. I am a foster parent for the local humane society and my hamster came to stay with me while being treated with medication for an infection. She was such a good addition to the household that I decided to adopt her. Please check your local humane society first. Even for small animals like hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, chinchillas and all types of birds. Good things happen when you adopt! With that said, here are my detailed findings on this Ferplast hamster cage. Pros: - Plastic middle level: Walking on wire all the time is bad for hamster feet. They can get sores from doing this. Once I found this out, I started looking for spacious cages that didn’t have wire. This cage fit the bill. While it doesn’t count for the overall size of the cage, I still think it makes her living space better and isn’t causing her harm. - Wire top: My hamster is a climber and this satisfies her need(occasional climbing isn’t like walking on wire all the time). I do not see her trying to climb in the lower level but she previously tried climbing a lot in a glass tank. - Clear, high walled plastic lower level: I can see my hamster running all over the cage, also helps keep the bedding inside - Overall size: 340sq inches isn’t quite large enough for a Syrian hamster but it covers a lot of space and give her a good area to move around in. - Tube option: I’ve seen articles saying that Syrians need 360sq inches and ones that say 460sq inches of ground space. Tube connection was a big selling point as I knew I would need to add another cage for more space. This factor separated this cage from other similar style/sized ones I was considering. - Cleaning: Very easy to take apart and clean. I can also block off the tube connection with the given caps and clean one cage while my hamster is in the other. Or, do 2 at once and let her run around the house in her ball. - Tube size: I previously tried a Kaytee Crittertrail cage and found that my hamster had some trouble with squeezing through the tubes(which were ~1.3”)(she also broke 2 different cage attachments and got loose twice). Ferplast tubes are ~2” and she has no problem running through even with her cheeks stuffed full. - House: She loves it. As you can see in the pictures, she has another housing option which is larger but she prefers the Ferplast house every night. I did need to put 2 rubber bands on it to keep it together due to my hamster’s abilities to lift the top off. This was a simple fix and makes it easier for cleaning than gluing together. - Cage door: Initially I didn’t like it, but I’ve found that I can get everything in and out without any issue. I can also pick up my hamster from anywhere in the cage with no issue as well. Also, the latch works well. The mechanics of opening it leads me to believe that a large hamster won’t be able to break out of it. So, looks are deceiving but it actually works quite well. - Security: I’ve found that hamsters are much stronger than they look. As previously noted, my Syrian has broken 2 attachments and escaped twice from a Kaytee Crittertrail cage. As this Ferplast cage and the Ferplast Laura cage (pink lower level, available on Amazon) do not have attachments these were a perfect choice. With the larger size of the connection tubes, my hamster isn’t putting any strain to get through so I am confident these are not an escape point. As noted with the door, the latch works nicely. It requires me to use 2 fingers to open so I do not see how my hamster could open a closed door. With the previous, Ferplast/Crittertrail set up, she had 2 escapes in 8 days. It’s been 8 days with the Ferplast/Ferplast set up and no escapes. ???? Cons: - Water bottle: Way too small in size. Too risky in case I’m not home daily, which happens. From my perspective, not a selling point for the cage so no need to include it, or increase the size. What I can say, is that I like the water bottle design in that it doesn’t have a spring in the tube, which I have found stops water follow. (Kaytee cages come with a spring in the tube. On a regular size Kaytee bottle you can push the ball all the way up the tube which forces the spring to stay up in the bottle and resolves this issue. I’ve found that Walmart has the old school, no spring design, guaranteed to work and not kill your pet from dehydration at about half the cost. As well as Choco Nose H128 for the no spring design) - Runner Wheel: Way too small for my Syrian hamster. Needed to buy Exotic Nutrition Silent Runner(well worth the $). Also, the space for the wheel is too small for an appropriately sized wheel for an adult Syrian. The Ferplast Laura cage(pink lower level, available on Amazon) is perfect for a 9” runner wheel.

Fun endless possibilities buy it!
I like lots about this cage mostly the space, and so many options to change it around so your pet isn’t bored to death all night! the tubes not fully attached but I’ll figure it out it would not move as is but just want to state it’s not secure but doable WARNING: the water bottle is not toxic my robo chewed the plastic too.... sadly those ppls hamsters died from dehydration, my hamster was going nuts i noticed the ball had dried up and my littke robo could not get the drips started again. I now keep a dish of water which he prefers over the bottle 99% ... i hope this helps at least one person those aweful water bottles are not to be trusted but bot because of being toxic... that was the hamster desperatly trying to chew to get water :(

Spacious habitat
It may seem small for Syrian hamster but in my experience it's big enough. There's 2 problem. 1- spinning wheel is small for Syrian hamster and bad quality but you can replace it with silent spinner wheel. 2- which is bigger issue for me that you can only attach ferplast tubes to the outlet. I bought two different brand and none of them fits. Ferplast tubes are expensive on Amazon and couldn't find at any store in Toronto.

Love this cage
OMG!!! Love this cage!! The delivery was fast, only 2 days and it was well packaged! Thank you AMAZON!! The cage is huge, lots of space to run around. I love the middle section, it's a hard plastic and so easy to clean.. each night when I take the top part off, which is also easy to remove, and then just take the plastic middle and dump out the excess food and wipe it down and put it back and voilà all clean again. The bottom part is a clear plastic but I find it fragile, you have to be careful when washing it because it can crack easily... :( that is my only complaint about the cage! Other than that, my hamster loves it, she's a Syrian hamster, only 2 months old, not full grown yet! The wheel that comes with the cage is small, meant more for a dwarf hamster or mouse, but no problem I replaced it with a comfort wheel I already had purchased, the water bottle is small as well and plastic, works great but I prefer glass so I replaced it with the glass one I already had and also food dish is huge so I put a smaller one!! Oh and another great feature, on one side there is an area where you can connect tubes, which I have ordered to make the cage more fun!! :) I totally recommend this cage, great size, super easy to clean and not a bad price for what you get!! Enjoy!

Disappointed after only two months
The design is pretty clean and The cage size is good for one hamster, but the cons or very disappointing: - The wheel is too small for most of hamsters (including syrian long hairs and short hairs). My hamster used to use the wheel on the old cage every night, but he doesn't even use it on this one. It is also pretty noisy. - The door doesn't lock properly and my hamster learned how to climb the cage and open it soon. We found the hamster out of the cage two times and now we have to put something on top of the cage so he cannot open it. - The water bottle gets locked from the inside. The hamster pulls it and it will get out of its place and be on the floor and hamster cannot drink anymore. - The water bottles metal marble came off after a while and it doesn't hold water anymore. I cannot even use another bottle on the cage since the space between the bars is not standard.
