Great product
Installation was a snap; I'm filling 4 55-gallon drums using only one hose and they were full after only 3/4" of rain. Great product fast delivery.

First Rate Device
We just set up two rain barrels, and using this diverter saved having to do quite a bit of downspout rerouting as the rain barrels are located "around the corner" from the downspout. The 1" tube that connects to the barrels solves this problem nicely. Our barrels have screened over tops, so we could not use the mounting option of placing the diverter higher than the tops of the barrels. The instructions don't make this too clear, but the location of the top edge of the downspout outlet inside the diverter chamber will determine the final water level in barrels with open tops. If you look inside the diverter, it is just a bit lower than the bottom edge of the door opening; the top edge of the part that the lower downspout fits into. Determine how high you want the barrel to fill, and mount the diverter in the downspout so that the top edge of the downspout outlet is at that level. When the barrel fills up, water will back up in the diverter until it spills over into the downspout outlet. This diverter works on the principle that water in a vertical drainpipe doesn't fall down the middle, but clings to the sides of the pipe as it falls. (With this in mind, be sure you mount the diverter at least 6" downstream from any bends in the downspout; this gives the water a chance to reestablish itself on the walls of the pipe.) When the falling water drops into the diverter chamber, it sprays around inside the chamber instead of falling straight through, and then is routed to the barrel. If a large volume of water is coming out of the downspout, and it is more than the line to the barrel can handle, the excess simply overflows into the downspout outlet. In a light rain, almost all of the water will go to the barrel. So far, it seems to work very well. The gutter we have it installed in drains about 1/3 of the roof of our not very large house, and a 0.4" rainfall will completely fill both 55 gallon barrels! I'm giving it four stars only because I haven't seen how well it stands up to a Midwest winter yet. Seeing it was designed for the Madison, Wisconsin area, I think it will most likely do just fine. Update 3/14/2011 The diverter passed through a rough winter just fine. I had the cap installed on the line to the rain barrels, so the water trapped in the diverter did freeze. It did no damage to the diverter and it did not ever plug the downspout area of the diverter with ice. I'm raising the review to five stars; I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this device to anyone. Great product! Update 1/17/2013 Looking over the current instruction sheet for installation, they have done a good job of clarifying the installation for open or screened top barrels. Kudos; that was much needed. Update 5/3 13 Now starting the third season with the diverter. It wintered just fine through another subfreezing Illinois winter; no cracks or leaks and we don't do anything special about winterizing it.(Basically, it's just left there...)The ONLY "problem" encountered so far is dirt from the gutter can accumulate in the line to the rain barrel and slow or stop rain flow into the barel. Just flush it with the garden hose. :-) Update 2/14/2018 This thing is the energizer bunny of rain diverters, it just keeps going. Still in use. still working fine, still not doing anything special to winterize it. :-) Update 4/15/2019 Well, it looks like the bitter cold weather in January finally took it's toll, the diverter has two cracks from ice. Looks like I can repair it with either epoxy or a Bondic pen, if not, it will be replaced with another one.

Expensive Plastic, But Good Design
I'm torn about not giving this a better review. It's not that it's bad, but if I'm spending $30 on something, I just feel like it should come with more. The main diverter is great, despite the fact that it's just a cleverly designed piece of injection molded plastic. The attachments, or lack thereof, are where it tests my faith. First off, unless you have an airtight barrel, completely airtight that is, you can't use it in "optimal" configuration. So, if you went out and found a recycled barrel, and let's face it, most of us probably looked at the price of a commercial new barrel and balked. I got mine at the local car wash dumpster as it's how they receive their detergent. Since I needed to mount a hose bib(spigot), the lid had to come off. Now that there's no airtight lid, that means the "optimal" configuration goes out the window. Not a huge deal, but I feel like I just reduced the utility of things somewhat out of necessity of design. The hose that comes with it now needs to route into the barrel. If you're buying this kit, you're not getting the fittings to do this on your own. So off to the hardware store we go. Now while the plastic hose that comes with it probably would be fine for a while, it seems kind of thin and flimsy. Something that might not hold up to the elements after a season or two. So while I'm there, add in a 1.25" ID piece of tubing...that stuff is expensive(~$3/foot). Now don't forget hose clamps, it doesn't come with any though the instructions themselves recommend them to "prolong life" of the product. So unless you want the hose to just drip water through the open barrel top(or lack thereof), you might want to mount it cleanly. Add in a bulkhead fitting, reducer, nipple, hose barb, and spade bit(if you don't have one) to your order. Don't forget the three cinder blocks, or similar, to sit your barrel on. You can see pretty quickly, this $30 item can quickly double in price real quick. The fact that I'm only using the singular piece of injection molded plastic which can't contain more than $1 in material makes me really less than thrilled with this purchase. Admittedly, some of this is my choice, and they do sell more advanced kits, but for these prices I'd rather kludge something together so I know what I'm getting. Now is that the fault of the manufacturer? Probably not entirely, but I don't think they're being entirely fair with one of two things; either the price, or the description of what you're getting. I think if this were a $10 - $15 purchase, I'd feel a lot better about giving it a 4 or 5 star rating. The problems probably follow every other similar item at the same price point, however, so it's not a function of this manufacturer. Ultimately, I'm sure once I have it all assembled and functional, I'll be quite happy and it'll do what I want it to do, but please be aware your barrel and the contents of this box are almost definitely not going to be enough to have you watering your begonias straight away. YMMV.
