Good but not dark
I really love to have my charcoal powders , it’s really good but it’s not as dark as the charcoal powders I make from the sticks. It’s very light tone . I don’t know if it’s like H or HB grade. So I have to use so many times with multiple layers to create the shade I want .

It's charcoal.
Works well.

Not impressed
This stuff goes down too light. Its also gritty instead of smooth. I found better luck laying down vine charcoal and then smearing that. And the plastic container is rediculously thin. That makes for cheap shipping, but it's worrying if it'll stand up to any abuse. If the container has a blowout there will be a heck of a mess!

Accidentally bought this but it’s still good
Accidentally bought this, but thought I’d tried it out anyways. It’s really good, can definitely make things look very gritty and dirty which is what I was going for.

Great application
Very satisfying - consistency is light and allows gradual layer buildup - tone is beautiful smoky - I love it.

Great but only when mixed with water
I use this for mixing with water and creating shading effects. Without the water, this charcoal is not as good as other charcoals as it does not bind well to the paper....it just keeps moving around.....My charcoal pencils are much better for creating different values on the paper. But mixed with water this charcoal gives really intense blacks and gives a range of values and also gives really cool effects that you could not get otherwise. For value for money, it will last a very long time and is much cheaper than other companies that sell smaller amounts.

Smooth gradients
I’ve been using charcoal and carbon pencils on and off for 6/7 years or so and always meant to try some of this out. I’ve been pleasantly surprised on how much easier it’s made smooth gradients when used with a soft watercolour brush. I’m working on a piece at the moment that’s on a very ‘toothy’ type of paper and was struggling to get a large, smooth gradient using a tortillion and brush so I bought this in hopes that it would help. Wish I would have bought some years ago now! A little goes a long way and a tub this size will last me years. Well worth the money.
