Extremely smooth and blends out really well

I bought these for a drawing class and they work great! They blend like a dream, but for first time charcoal users; be careful to protect your work with a spray on fixative or something similar because the charcoal does not stay in place! Fortunately, all of my pieces came unbroken, I think this has something to do with the delivery service rather than the seller on amazon. Either way, this type of charcoal can be used broken or whole! In general, artists tend to break these up into bits anyways, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

GREAT stuff!

I used this for my portraits, and man, is this stuff smooth and awesome. I love it. Good quality - came exactly as described. Its very light, and easy to use - a beginner like me can utilize this. Compared to other brands out there, i found that this one came intact, where as another order i placed - the packaging was all weird, and the product inside had been damaged. I think this should last a long time as well considering i dont do charcoal sketches everyday. I love this stuff, and would probably end up ordering more as a backup.

Quality charcoal, but not as soft or well-packaged as I would like

I have been using this charcoal in my drawing class. It is higher quality than a lot of brands out there and it will last you a while. However, it is not as soft as I would expect "soft" charcoal to be. It has very rough, hard edges and is not conducive for gesture drawing. In addition, all of the vine charcoal was uniform in width. I did not see any variation in size as you would expect from a box of charcoal (and from the pictures of the product). Moreover, as other reviewers have pointed out - it is not in a sturdy box. While it arrived in fairly whole pieces with just a few breaks, the packaging was not sturdy enough for transporting beyond my apartment without purchasing a different container (doubling the cost of the charcoal). While the price looks good online, it will end up costing you more in the long run. Buy local.

Great Value, If you use vine charcoal often you know how quickly it runs out. This box has lasted me over a months work of classwork and at home projects. Great deal for a good quality soft vine charcoal.

Breaks easy when you need it to

Does it's job, in terms of vine charcoal. Breaks easy when you need it to, but holds up decent under some pressure. It's a bit hard to store, but if you have a storage space for it, that works good.

I chose Grumbacher Soft because I love my Grumbacher watercolors

I'm a beginner, taking an art class. The teacher said to buy some Vine Charcoal. She lent me a piece of her own charcoal for the first class; it was fairly soft and flowed really well for drawing. Since I never purchased charcoal before, I chose Grumbacher Soft because I love my Grumbacher watercolors. I was disappointed. One area of the charcoal stick was fine and provided a nice line, but if I turned the stick slightly, the stick was so hard that it wouldn't make a mark; if I pushed hard, it provided a slightly darker line (more like a pencil than a piece of charcoal.) There are no art stores in my small town, so I'll have to try another brand and cross my fingers that theirs is softer and provides more uniform surface. Thanks.
