Superb production toolmaking vise
Just wanted to say how great this vise is working for our dental instrument production area. The vertical and horizontal channels are what we needed for clamping 3mm round tubing at exactly 90 degrees. It works as a fixture for holding stainless steel ferrules perfectly vertical during tapping with a 1.8m x 0.35 micro tap. It works as a clamp for sanding ends of same ferrule square. It is extremely versatile and very well made. Perfect size and weight to hold small parts steady during work without being bolted down itself. Precisely square and flush on bottom, sides, and front for use in X-Y-Z axes.

Nice, but...
A reasonable size drill press vise that's therefore useful even with smallish drill presses. Note that it is a drill press vise, and not a precision machine vise, so while flat and square on 4 sides, the finish on the flats is smooth (showing minor machining marks) but certainly not polished. The manufacturer's box that it came in stated, "Manufactured in the US from domestic and imported components"... here, I'm skeptical about just how much of this vise was actually made/manufactured in the US. I say this because, while the quality is relatively good (far better than Harbor Freight-type products), the vise does have some definite China/India characteristics. Further, having seen similar, but decades older Palmgren vises in machine shops I've been in, it's more than obvious that the current quality is much worse, i.e. the older vises are, comparatively, really fine, nice things. Not surprising since my cursory exploration of the vise sections of the Palmgren website showed that probably 80% of the items in those categories are made entirely in China. So much for a once proud American company that in the past exclusively made quality products! Bottom line, this particular item is nice, but I've seen some of the Chinese Palmgren stuff up close and I assure you that it's no better than Harbor Freight, i.e. real junk.

Versatile drill press vice
Nice vise for a small drill press. A bit pricey. Sides are machined so the vise can be turned on its side, which is very handy

Much less aggravating than poor quality screwless vises
I agree with T. Hurst, that the quality of this vise is a little shaky. I had to start somewhere for the home shop though, and I couldn't afford a US made Wilton bullet vise for bench work, or a 4" Kurt for the drill press. I've gotten a lot of use out of it though. Much less aggravating than poor quality screwless vises, even if the accuracy is relatively poor. If I could have done it over, I'd have gotten a used vise on Ebay. I don't regret buying this one though, and I'm sure it'll see lots more use in the coming decades.
