Disappointing Quality

The design could be improved. Currently when configured as a pounder only three threads are engaged due to the pointed side. The handle could have fit within a row of points but they chose the lazy way. Functionally it is probably fine but poor design. Update: I was sorely mistaken...when leaving off the plastic handle spike protector, the handle screws down between the rows of points and catches many more threads on the handle. My apologies to the company. I have updated my review rating.

Spikes Can Be Problematic

I didn't fully understand how this was built. I thought the spiked surface was an attachment. It's not...it's the opposite side of the flat surface. There is a screw that runs down the center of the handle and the pounding plate screws into it. It can be flipped like a coin to give you the flat or spiked side facing down. This means that if you want to use the flat surface, the spikes are pointing up. And since there is not a large flange at the base of the handle, the spikes come in contact with your hand. Now, I realize that you should not be pounding meat with the force of a sledge hammer and the spikes are not needle sharp, but it's something to consider when choosing this product over others. Feels pretty solid. Handle could be a little bigger. The nut holding the center screw in place inside the handle is rusted AF. These are all minor issue not worth returning the product over.

This item has made our kitchen duty of pounding meats to tenderize them so much easier. It's down right fun to use, it's quiet, takes no effort and is quick, easy and mess free. If you don't have one, you're missing out!

Excellent for pounding cuts of meat thin

This thing works GREAT to get a piece of meat nice and thin, breaking down tendon and tough fibers. I use it to pound chicken breast thin for schnitzel, milanesa, etc. I also use it to pound down some cuts of beef, such as round roast for rouladen. I am not a huge fan of using the pointy side because I feel like it sort of sprays bacteria around (since you can't cover with saran/foil/etc) and I'm a bit of a germaphobe- haha! But it is a great tool otherwise. Nice and heavy, washes up nice in the dishwasher. Highly recommend!

Best meat pounder I've ever owned

I bought this meat pounder because it was the top rated meat pounder on America's Test Kitchen. It is by far the best one I've ever owned. It's a hefty weight, easy grip handle that screws on and off easily to flip the head from flat to the tooth side. The plastic cover for the tooth side is a nice touch.
