Just awesome, time will tell longevity…
Nice sander, very powerful the adjustable speeds is a plus. 2 things to point 1 should have a hard case for transportation and because isn’t a cheaper machine, 2 a punch plate for sander sheets should be added or at least recommended with purchase. After some research I find one makita punch plate for this sander but the punch holes are too small, just a huge mistake from makita engineers

Quiet sander with little dust
This is the best sander that I ever owned. It's quiet and the enclosed dust collection is OK. I made it better by connecting the exhaust with 1 1/4" vinyl tubing (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0966WL719/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) to my shop vac and it is even better. The connection was helped with a piece of solid rubber clothes washing machine drain tubing, ring clamp, and an adapter for the vacuum.

Template not a Deal Breaker
Just received my Makita from Amazon, delivered to my door in 2 days, Sweet! It is genuinely made in Japan and appears to be top notch quality. I remember the day when that meant it was crap but that is yesteryear now! So far so good. All in all this appears to be an awesome product. I have not used this unit yet but will update my review later. For now I will address 2 issues. First regarding the complaint of Makita not providing a template. While that would be welcomed realize that compared to the competition (Bosch) this Makita provides the option of vacuum holes at the sandpaper surface! And just like the Bosch there are holes at the edges of the mount block that will collect dust if you choose not to punch your sandpaper. So people are complaining about an extra on the Makita that is not fully supported. Still it is an extra! A Makita punch is available with the part number mentioned in another review for 15 bucks from Ace Tools online. Frankly it is not difficult to make a diy option. It could be as simple as using the provided sandpaper to draw circles on the back of standard sandpaper and cutting a cross with a razor blade into those circles. And obviously one can come up with better solutions than even the sold template should one be willing to spend a little bit of effort. Second, the biggest drawback of the Makita versus the Bosch that I see now is the necessity of locating, buying, and dealing with the disposable paper dust collection bags. I will certainly be setting up a vacuum connection to the sander which should not be too difficult given the cast aluminum hose fitting. But for quick small jobs the reusable Bosch filter system is way superior IMO. So far I see that as the main consideration for determining which of these two products to purchase. UPDATE (10/21/2012): After a lot of use I largely have confirmed my initial comments. This is a high quality large half sandpaper sander similar in action to a palm sander. Without punching holes it collects dust from the side vents. If you decide to make vents in the sandpaper the dust collection is better but not a dramatic leap forward. Still it is a nice option. The clamps and the hold on button work awesome. The biggest single drawback in my opinion is the lack of a reusable dust collector such as comes with the Bosch unit. Still overall I prefer this Makita!

JAPANESE QUALITY
35 years cabinet/millwork/carpentry experience. i can finish anything when it comes to woodworking, paint, lacquer, 2 part, poly/varnish, hand rubbed, etc. having the right sander for the right finish is key. this is my arsenal which includes the makita BO6030, BO4900V and 9924DB. makita BO6030, 99% swirl free sander. balanced, quiet, quality and made in UK. makita BO4900V, very impressive! just as good as porter cable (USA model) 505. really like grip on top. primers, sealers and in between coats, i use 320 grit and man talk about smooth!!! MADE IN JAPAN! makita 9924DB i prefer rear handle over top handle. this is my 2nd 9924db, gave my old one to my best friend... still uses it at his cabinet shop. its over 20yr old. MADE IN JAPAN! other models to find, "MUST HAVES!" porter cable 303, 505 and 7336 older models only MADE IN USA, some of the best quality and finishes ever! METABO SXE450 MADE IN GERMANY or old rigid (the orange sanders in pic) sanders made by metabo. not the hitachi metabo new crap. one of the best dual action sanders ever! FESTOOL ETS 125 decent 5" sander for face frames and stiles and rails. i own a lot of festool... meh ok for today's standards, bets china crap, but not as good as old school tools. bottom line BUY QUALITY! yes some of my tools are china crap. ALL companies nowadays uses some parts outsourced from other countries. so when you find tools made in the USA, JAPAN, SWITZERLAND, GERMANY, buy'em buy'em buy'em they will last a looooooong time and make you $$$$$!

Finish sanding

Well balanced and powerful.
I do quite a lot of woodworking, furniture making and carpentry. I bought this tool to smooth the surface (before planing) of a sequoia flitch that would be used for a coffee table. The sander is very well balanced and easy to work with, relatively quiet (for a sander), with minimal vibration. Dust extraction is excellent. You can control the number of strokes which gives you the option of sanding lightly or aggressively. Makita makes excellent power tools that last--I've never had to replace any of mine; but my Makita reciprocating saw needed to be repaired twice for the same defect. (For reciprocating saws, go to Milwaukee or DeWalt). I have a Makita router that works perfectly after almost 28 years. For sanders like this, I recommend using Abranet sanding rolls--the dust is easily extracted by the sander. If nothing else, it keeps the work surface clear.

Great piece of kit
Very comfortable to use, and a good weight to get the job done. With variable speed and good handling, it’s making life a lot easier. I have had many Makita tools over the years, and they’re still going strong. I’m sure that this sander will be no different.

Lovely bit of kit
good feel - metal , not so much plastic , previous was a Ryobi - loads of plastic cleaned it several times but couldn't take the pace. This one is much better. Will update when the workshop isn't so bloody cold !
