Lowest cost replacement
This is the lowest cost replacement I could find for a very similar door chime from 20 years ago.

The first one ordered arrived broken but was quickly replaced and the unit is an exact replacement for my original chime which was fried by lightning.

Not A Direct Replacement Chime
This Heath Zenith SL-2796-02 Basic Series Wired Door Chime, White is supposed to be a direct replacement for my broken chime with the same part number and identical external measurements. The new chime works very well and is loud and clear, as expected. My problem is that the mounting holes are about 1/4" narrower on the new chime than my old chime. In all other ways the old and new chimes look identical. If you are using this new chime as a replacement chime for a chime that has been painted around, mounting holes that do not align are a problem. My old chime was mounted in drywall using plastic anchors. If I use one of the holes on the new chime, the 2nd hole will not only not line up with the old second hole, it is too close to the old hole to put in a new drywall anchor. Since there was no room to drill a new hole in the chime plastic bracket I had to remount the new chime and touch up the paint. This was much more work than I had intended for a stupid mistake by the manufacturer. If the mounting holes had lined up properly I would have given this chime 5 stars but, since they didn't line up it was really 3 stars for my purposes, so I averaged them out to 4 stars.

Not very loud
This doorbell was not difficult to install but I was disappointed in the low volume of the bell tone.

Some installation comments, Good product
I like this product better than the newhouse item. It is smaller but actually seems louder. I have a couple installation comments. One, test the product with your transformer before you mount it to the wall the wall. By testing it I noticed that the position of the device is important for the correct ringtone. Add power and hold the device how you want to mount it to make sure it works right. Two, I ordered a slightly stronger Transformer because I wanted multiple ringers in my house. When I attached the ringer to my transformer initially there was a loud humming sound. I thought this meant there was a short in the system. I waited five minutes and now the sound has gone away. I now believe that the humming sound may have been due to the striker vibrating in the magnetic field when the power was introduced. This humming sound happened with two different ringers from two different companies. I removed and return the first one. I kept the second one because it became quiet after five minutes.

A nice simple doorbell
My house has a strange layout where there are two transformers and two different doorbell units. I had installed a unit very similar to this for our main door about 12 years ago and it still works fine. On the other door, there was a crummy painted over buzzer, not a bell, and it died. To replace it, I wanted to have it look like the other unit since the two units are fairly close to each other (one is in the kitchen and one is in the adjoining foyer). The cover of this unit is an exact match for the old one. The internal mechanism is slightly different. The old one has three mounting screws (similar to one of the reviewers here). The new one has two mounting screws. If you stare through the slots at the bottom of the cover, they look slightly different, but I am not sure who would ever do that (except for me since I installed both). The new one is installed as a "back" door so it just does a ding, rather than a ding-dong, to distinguish it from the old one. It was nice to be able to find a nice simple doorbell for a good price. I installed a musical doorbell for my parents and it died after about five years. Sometimes simpler is just better. Another reviewer commented that these covers are good for replacing missing ones from older units and I would have to agree since I can interchange my 12 year old cover with the new one with no issues. My only possible negative is that if you have a really big house, this doorbell may not be loud enough for you. In my three bedroom house, I think it is loud enough.

Nice basic unit
This is a very basic unit that replaced an existing one of the same model. It hasn't changed so installation was pretty simple. Disconnecting the wires and unscrewing the old unit The last unit lasted about 9 years, but it doesn't get a lot of use. People around here usually knock anyway, and we don't have a back door so only the one come gets used. It's a basic 'ding dong' from the front door and a single Ding from the back If it lasts another 9 years I'll be happy.
