Works great
I'm a fan. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. I tried that stainless steel & one returned it. this little plastic one works better. Just don't drop it onto a concrete floor.

Good Idea, Could be better executed though, room for improvement
Found this gadget online a few months back and had been waiting for it to be restocked at my local Big Box hardware retailer. I even emailed the original inventor to find out availability on this product. Then i found it on Amazon and bought it straight away. I had done my homework and kind of expected the quality of the product i received. First impressions were not great, until I realized it wasn't the Stud Thud that was the problem, it was the fact that the gyprock contractor has only used screws at the joins where two sheets meet, and the rest was held in place with sheet adhesive. Once i worked out the approximate place of the horizontal joins, finding said screws [studs] were easy and the product did its thing. Finding metal studs will also be dead easy. Improvements could be had, The base of the unit needs a felt patch on it to avoid marking the walls. the quality of the plastic could be improved also. Buy it if you need to find screws [studs] for a living. Its cheap enough to take a gamble on, and once you work out the "technique" finding screws [studs] is pretty easy. GP

First one to work reliably on our Plaster/Lathe walls
Basic but works. This is essentially a very strong magnet, that slaps forward when it finds nails or anything magnetic. That slap makes it easy to use. We've tried many stud finders on our heavy plaster and lathe walls - they didn't work well at all. Our lathe is held on with tiny tacks, and few magnetic finders even detect them. This one does, the thud/slap of the magnet is faint but it is there - finally!!! Pros: strong magnet, audible and tactile thud when it detects a nail/screw/tack. Easy to use and no false positives. Cons: plastic base had sharp edges from where plastic injection when it was made. That's the area you drag across your walls, leaving visible scrapes. Of all the places to put your plastic injection point - really poor choice. I deburred the base to fix that issue. Easy to do, but shouldn't have come that way. Recommendation: Works well, no batteries needed, reliable and small. Definitely recommended.

Functional
SO SMALL! Fits in the palm of my hand, literally. Works very well, but would be better with a larger functional area, even an additional 1/4" in magnet diameter could help you find studs quicker...but thats just nitpicking. My only true issue with this product is that is is really flimsy. It fell off my mantel (4 1/2 feet maybe) and the top broke off, which lead to the magnet falling out and me cussing quite audibly. Easily fixed with a piece of tape once I fit all the pices back inside. I live in an old house which has been coverted to apartments, on one of the walls (which is warped and slowly, ever so slowly bulging out into my living room) would not indicate the presence of stud nails at all. Could have been user error, or the fact that the wall is relatively "thicker" due to fact that the drywall has probably been pushed away from the stud. Anyway I'm just guessing lol. ALL IN ALL: Good product, cheaply made, but also sold dirt cheap and very functional. Did what I needed it to do.

This gave me the best guess as to where the actual stud was
I used this little tool to attach my TV mount to my living room wall. After a few passes I came across a nail and the Stud Thud "thudded" and stuck to the nail. The magnet is strong enough that I could get an even more accurate idea of where the nail was from how strongly it would pull as I moved it around a (very) small amount at a time. Once I was sure I was directly over the nail, I removed the Stud Thud and marked the position on the wall. I repeated this process about 3 times on the same stud and then used a straight-edge to mark an "average" line between my marks. This gave me the best guess as to where the actual stud was. After drilling into the drywall and stud, it was apparent that this product did it's job perfectly. I like using this better than an electric stud finder. It's dead simple and works.

Small package, big results
Even after reading other positive reviews of this gadget, I was doubtful that it could work. Living in a circa 1945 home with rock lathe plaster walls, I've not found that any stud finder to be reliable. Plaster walls like those in my house vary in thickness considerably and fool pretty much everything. They don't fool this stud finder. Although this finder obviously is just going to find nails and other ferrous metal, it does that job quite well. I'd like it better if it found the edge of studs, but the fancy electronic stud finders can't even match what this finder can accomplish. My one complaint is that the hard plastic case can mar paint on walls. It would have been nice if a thin felt or cloth layer was included to make the finder slide more easily over walls.

Stud Thud Works Well
Happy to report that I found the studs buried behind the lathe and plaster in our historic home. I slowly worked my way along the wall with the Stud Thud and located the studs for hanging the cabinet. Taking my time it became quite obvious where the studs were. By slowly moving the stud finder across the wall I could observe the magnet start to move as it approached many nails. It also worked well through the ceramic tile to locate the studs in the tub surround. My husband has no idea how I managed to accurately mark the studs. This shall remain one of those mysteries of marriage for him. I love that he thinks I am a wizard. The battery-powered stud-finder that we have in the garage can stay out there in the cold. Using the electronic stud finder I was never confident that I was going to strike wood when I drilled through the drywall. The Stud Thud, however, works great. I was certain that I knew where the wood lay.
