Something changed

I’m giving this a reluctant 3. This was my second time purchasing this filler. The first time was amazing did exactly what you needed it to do. This time however it doesn’t even successfully fill a pin hole, I don’t get what happened, it just sands right off. I’m not sure if they got it right or wrong last time

Great product!

Easy to use, works great for filling chips and missing chunks in furniture. Easy to sand as well. Haven’t painted over it yet, but should work fine!

Shrinks when painted with latex primer and topcoat

Despite what the directions say about NOT shrinking I had a problem with the final appearance of filled screw holes drilled with sharp Forstner bits in birch plywood, and also with wood joints between birch veneered plywood and solid wood. I used this DAP filler full thickness in either one coat or two thinner coats as a second try. I filled, dried overnight in a 74° shop, sanded to final 400 grit on a foam padded commercial sanding pad until perfectly smooth. I could not see or feel anything (like I would with auto body work to make Bondo invisible through primer and color coat at feathered edges). When the filled hole in either the birch plywood or solid wood became visible after priming (Best quality Sherwin Williams without thinning the paint, with a Graco sprayer w/315 tip) I light-sanded the primer by hand, refilled and re-sanded this time with a hard sanding block made from flat planed American cherry scrap with stick-on 400 grit sandpaper on it until absolutely flat and smooth - then waited overnight and again primed. They again became visible. I also had a problem with using this product as a grain filler on mahogany. I used Bondo on cracks and the DAP filler for grain filling. I thinned it with water to thick paint consistency, spread it with a brush against the grain and removed excess with my well-used, perfectly smooth-edged 6" drywall knife at 45° to the grain, then dried and sanded with 400 grit with a Porter Cable non-random orbit palm sander to "baby skin" smoothness. Again, after priming the grain became visible, but the Bondo cracks did not. The only thing I can think of is that the primer needed to be sprayed very thin and two coated to keep from re-dissolving the DAP filler -- creating a danger of not flowing out properly. I've refurbished Kraft Maid kitchen cabinet doors made from MDF with the same sprayer. They needed only sparse filler for small dings on which I used Bondo, and the finish after sanding, priming and painting with the same sprayer was a perfect, even, smooth sheen. I'll add some photos to this review later.

Worked Great

Had a big cut out on the bottom of my back door used this to fix the issue and looks like there was never nothing there now.
