I almost didn't want to post this for fear of jinxing a good result, but I my neighbors and I have had a severe woodpecker problem for years, and after replacing siding and painting and seeing 4 more new holes, I had to do something. Time will tell, but (fingers crossed) it seems to be working. I read the other reviews, and when I received the Bird-X I selected the downy woodpecker distress call and 1 of the 4 predators. I set it out on my deck pointed partially at my back yard and partially at the woods behind my house where the woodpeckers (I have both downy and hairy) tend to hang out when they are not making swiss cheese of my siding. I kept the volume at about 1/2 level, and it seems to be doing the trick. One caveat: I am using this in conjunction with several other deterrents-- A "prowler owl" that has moving wings, windsocks and chimes at each corner of the house under the eaves, and a stationary owl that I move around. I am not sure which is working, but something is. Not a hint of pecking anywhere, and my neighbors have commented that they haven't seen any woodpeckers in the area since I started using these deterrents about 2 weeks ago. The Bird-X is a bit pricey, and I am not sure if alone it would do the job, but in concert with the other deterrents I'm using it's certainly been effective so far. One quibble with other reviewers... one mentioned that you can select from 8 different predator calls and one mentioned the importance of identifying the correct woodpecker... There are actually only 4 predator calls on this unit, and 4 bird distress calls (Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker, Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker & House Sparrow). To me, that gives me only 1 choice of woodpecker (Downy). I suppose the other birds may be of the woodpecker family (house sparrow??), but I have 2 different species of actual woodpeckers attacking my house. So far the Downy distress call seems to be effective to deter both species. Not sure how long thawill hold up, but I'm hopeful. Also, knowing which predators are which in relation to the dip switches would be helpful... the manual only states "Predator I-IV"...not very helpful. I have been playing around with various combos of predators and the downy distress call. I guess the lack of a better explanation of the predator calls and the inclusion of only 1 woodpecker distress call is my reason for only 4 stars. Bottom line... it's costly, but far less costly than replacing or repairing siding, and safer than having to continually go up on a 22 foot ladder to fix holes.

Supposed to support battery, but really doesn't

The product description says "power requirements: 110v or 220vAC or 12vDC" and the instructions claim you can use a 12v battery, but there is no "optional" battery cable supplied. I have to put this inside a vent in my unfinished attic, so I can't plug it in. Trying to decide whether to see if I can rig up something on my own or just return the whole thing. Listening to the woodpecker tear up my house as I type this.

An Additional Part of your Home Defense - Not a Silver Bullet

I purchased this after having my home attacked by small woodpeckers. I have used all of the simpler approaches including reflective tape, balloons, etc. None have worked. I purchased this as another approach and think it adds value, but it has tradeoffs. The device has live recordings of shrieking birds which apparently scares the bejesus out of the peckers. The problem is they have a short memory, so you need to decide how long you want this turned on. It is not pleasant to listen to these animal distress sounds. So i turned it on during their prime pecking hours (11-1 PM) and I would say it helped. They still come back, but not as frequently. Not a silver bullet, but another tool.

We WON! Cedar-sided House vs. Woodpeckers

We have been fighting woodpecker’s for years. They do not even let up in Minnesota winters-and this summer one hole was filled with baby birds! After repairing all of the holes (more than a dozen), we power washed, primed and painted the house. While on the final wall and final coat, a sneaky pecker pecked a golf-ball sized hole on the opposite side of the house. That’s when I ordered my Binford 9000 woodpecker machine (Bird x peller). So worth every penny! I have a 3000sf house and I put this under the corner of the deck where it’d be directly aiming at the 2 most invaded sides of the house. I don’t know what types of woodpeckers we have been fighting but using the wounded woodpecker mode with 2 different predator screeches has done the trick! It has been 3 months and not one pecker has pecked! I run it in “random” time and sound mode, 1st with short intervals, now set for longest random in between mode. They are still in the neighborhood as my neighbor finally gave up and replaced his cedar siding for fiber board. I do have a couple owl statues out as well but I think this bird xpeller is GOLD if you have woodpeckers moving in with you

Does NOT Keep Woodpeckers Away

It takes a bit of effort to program this device but I got it done correctly. The bird sounds are very real. I was SO hoping it would work! The woodpeckers are destroying my house’s columns and outside trim! But, unfortunately, it didn’t work for a minute! The woodpecker was pecking away fifteen feet away from this device’s bird sounds. So don’t waste your money on this one either. Bummer!!

Cheap insurance

Woodpeckers attacked our cedar siding, huge holes, thousands $$$ to replace damaged boards. We had tried streamers, but unless you install them on hangers (so hang away from siding), they can actually scratch the paint off the wood and don't actually fly around enough to scare the birds. Cornell Lab of Ornithology (Google) has an independent study (all of other websites seem to have a motivation to sell you something). In short Cornell's recommendation - don't paint your house a 'tree' like color but if the woodpeckers like your house, streamers (properly installed) work the most reliably and cheapest (however you do have to replace periodically). I purchased Bird-X as additional insurance after an expensive repair. Does it work? No idea, we've had no woodpeckers since we launched our offense. It appears well made, easy to set-up and very loud. Be sure and follow instructions (random calls and only periodically seems to be the recommendation). For the price - its cheap insurance. Cornell Lab seems to think it may have some limited benefit.
