Who cut the cheese? I did.
Yes, I cut the cheese... once I found a decent slicer that works as well as the claims in the product description. TheNorpro Cheese Slicer turned out to be a good one, and surprisingly so after having gone through a number of them trying to find just one that worked as well as the product claims. So let's examine some of them: ▪ Made of heavy duty zinc alloy: true, and it's sturdy as well ▪ Easily adjusts to different size thickness: quite true ▪ Hand washing recommended: probably good advice ▪ Measures 5-inch/13cm: true, and that's the overall length ▪ Includes extra stainless steel cutting wire: true Other observations not noted in the product description: ▪ Made in Taiwan for Norpro; noted on the back of the package ▪ Cuts cheeses up to 4-inches thick; measured ◆ Other Products Bought: Looking at a couple of other cheese slicers that I've purchased here over the last two years, here are some subjective observations: OXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer This one had good promise as I had good experiences with some of their other kitchen utensils over time. The rubberized grip seemed like a good idea and the overall construction was good, but it had no adjustments for thickness of the slices. And though it had a stainless-steel wire "for easy slicing," the wire broke within four months, so into the trash it went; a true 1-star device. It was later that I discovered the newerOXO Good Grips Wire Cheese Slicer with Replaceable Wires , but by then it was too late. Swissmar Adjustable Cheese Slicer Another one with good promise, as it was a hefty and solid product. Specs show that it "measures 5-2/3 by 5-inch," which is correct. But the brass side screws needed to be adjusted with a pair of pliers. The wire on this broke in less that a year, so checking with the Swissmar site found that the listed a "Wire replacement for # D1024 Dalla Piazza branded Cheese Slicer. Also fits Swissmar branded Adjustable Wire Cheese Slicer #S3009. Just undo screws on the sides of the slicer, replace wire, tighten screws." Cannot locate this here on Amazon, so it's sitting in the kitchen utensil drawer until I can pick up replacement wires locally. This one is a 3-star utensil. ◆ Summary: Have no complaints with thisNorpro Cheese Slicer (Model #330) so far. It's comfortable to use, well crafted and has a decent finish, making it easy to clean. The roller action is very smooth, and the brass side adjustment screws hold quite well, with a good range of thickness for cheese slices. The stainless-steel cutting wire is still tight after months of use, and it does come with a spare wire in the package in case the original one breaks. At that point I'll contact Norpro. This is a good utensil, and highly recommended for those looking for a decent slicer. So who cut the cheese? I did, once that I found a slicer that really works. JW ▪ 2/9/2014

Short, heavy and well made!
I received a KitchenAid wide cheese slicer for Christmas. And it was great! That is, until it broke where the neck met the handle. So I purchased this one. It is considerably shorter in the handle than the other one, and a lot heavier. [KA handle is about 6" and Norpro is about 3 1/2".] It might take a couple days to get used to it, but I like 2 things already. The wire goes all the way down to the surface you are cutting on. and you can set the size of the slices without worrying about changing the angle of the handle to vary the thickness. You will need a cutting board though, as the slicer seems to need to be almost perpendicular to the slice you are cutting. It also comes with an extra wire, that is nice, as long as I don't loose it by putting it in a 'safe place'. All in all, I think it is a really good slicer for the 5# chunks I buy at Smart and Final. Knives, just don't cut it! [Pun intended]. Update: Several months and a lot of cheese later, I would give this more than 5 stars! Excellent, I am so glad I purchased this! It's substantial heft is no lie. It is as strong and stable as it feels. If you slice a LOT of cheese, you Have to get this one! Update 5/10/16 Alas, I think I am just too much of a cheese eater. This one finally gave out too after 10 months of daily use on the large chubs of cheese. You can't be in a hurry to slice them and I usually push faster then I should. But with smaller chubs and proper use it should last a lot longer than mine did. I am buying another one because I like it so much.

There's a trick to making the cutting wire last longer
This wire slicer does a great job cutting cheese from blocks at various thicknesses. However, the cutting wire assembly that is doing that great job can pop out and need to be replaced. However, there's a trick to making it last much longer. At first glance it looks like it doesn't matter which way you hold this slicer. However, if you hold it the "right" way the cutting wire will last longer. That right way is to cut with the screws which hold the cutting wire in place facing up. That way you're not pulling the wire from its brass ends with each slice. That said, the slicer comes with a replacement wire and more is available right here on Amazon if you need them.

Very good cheese slicer
I know some buyers had bad reviews of this, but most of them were childish and un-realistic. I got mine today and I have to say I'm glad I spent $9 instead of $17 for the other brand of stainless steel one. This one is chrome plated pot metal and I'm sure it's just as sturdy as the SS one, although I'm a big fan of stainless steel. However, SS is designed for items that will get a lot of wear in usual conditions. A cheese slicer doesn't get a lot of wear for most people... it's used occasionally. This one isn't going to wear out just because it's not made of SS. The roller is aluminum and the adjustments that hold it in place are brass. The wire is stainless steel and the blocks on the end of the wires that hold it in place are brass. All high quality metal. Some reported the adjusting knobs were stripped or didn't hold. I find them to be of very high quality material, not stripped out, very good threads, and I suggest only hand-tighten. They have screwdriver slots in the ends, but I wouldn't tighten brass with a screwdriver as it is a soft material and might strip out. It comes with a spare cutting wire, although it would be easy to make your own. The adjustments work perfectly. The wire is offset so that it rests below the roller for a clean cut on a countertop (some people complained that some of the cheese slicer's rollers didn't allow the wire to go all the way to the countertop. This model is designed right and it does allow for that). Some people complained of the cheese sticking to the wire and/or roller. That all depends on the type of cheese you are cutting and you can alleviate that by spraying the roller with Pam. The wire still gathered cheese for me, but all my wires cutters do on extra sharp cheddar cheese.
