No power to the unit UPDATE

UPDATE I called customer service and after being on hold for a few mins it sent me to voicemail. After leaving a voice mail I tried again and found that you do NOT need to have a long hold on the power button, just a quick press will start the unit. Later that evening customer service did reach out by text. They were willing to send out a new control unit if needed but I should be good to go. The smoker arrived in the time it was supposed to and assembly was relatively easy. The instructions were clear, but it did help to watch a YouTube video before hand so I knew what to expect. The edges of the hopper are very sharp and I expect will one day slice the cover to shreds if you are not careful putting it on. When I went to do the initial burn in, the unit would not power on. One of the trouble shooting tips is to check the fuse behind the LCD unit. It is a little tricky to take the unit out, but it goes back in quite easily. They include an additional fuse attached to the circuit board, but the original fuse was not blown. I replaced it anyway with the additional fuse, but still no power to the unit. I will reach out to customer service and update this review.

Great grill for the money

Can't complain for the money. This thing makes smoking a breeze. Assembly instructions aren't the best, but not hard to figure out. Would 100% recommend for someone looking to get a beginner pellet grill.

I bought this a while back now (over a year ago). It was a newer company with a lower price point, but I read up on them and made the purchase. It also came with a bonus fitted cover. I put it all together myself, wasn't hard, but I like to build things. One thing I would have done differently in the start, is use some Loctite on external screws (like around the frame/wheels). Some of them love to get loose after a while. I keep in under the covered patio, but move it to where I will be smoking, and loose support screws are annoying. The hopper has a handle on it, that you pull up on, to move this unit around. It flexes the side of the drum when you pick up. I have a heavy duty cardboard roll I have in between the top of the hopper and the drum that keeps it from compressing when I wheel it around (I slide it out when I am going to use the smoker). This unit really needs to be reinforced there and not have the auger housing take up all the slack. The wheels are nice quality. I just wish there was less play back and forth on the axel. It makes it feel wobbly when pulled around. I should have applied some spacers to it when I put it together, but didn't have any at the time. The temp gauge sometimes does a great job, other times it does not. The ambient temperature and direct sunlight can definitely play a role in it, but it struggles sometimes to not be 25-50 degrees over where I set it. Typically 25 F hotter if it does. I do not have excess pellets that slipped into the fire pot after moving it either. Overall, I am happy with the price I paid and how it works. I feel there is definitely room for some design improvements. If I had to do it again I'd still buy it.

Customer service saves the day

Let me start by saying that I bought this product so this is not a review paid for by the seller. I ordered this because it was half the price of the Treager and I had read good things about it. When I received it I measured the wall thickness to compare to my friends Treager and found that the metal on mine was a bit thinner then the Treager, but fairly close. Assembly wasn't too tough but did require about an hour. Once assembled I began the initialization procedure which calls for priming the auger tube and then doing a brief (45 minutes I believe) high temperature burn in. I was able to complete the burn in, but when I tried to actually cook with it the next day it refused to work and displayed ER1 which according to the manual is a temperature probe error...... Oh boy, here we go!!! I contacted Z Grill customer service and left a voice mail message. A real person returned my call within 5 minutes. After a brief discussion about the problem they concluded (as had I) that the problem must be either the temperature probe itself or the control board. Since the temperature probe is cheaper and easier to replace they sent me a new temperature probe. Unfortunately, they sent it USPS and it was over the Thanksgiving day holiday so it took 2 weeks to reach me. I installed the temperature probe (which is a piece of cake) and the problem persisted. I again contacted customer service and they agreed to send me the control board. Since I had now owned this grill for better then 3 weeks and had yet to cook on it, they agreed to send the control board Fedex. Here is the only fault I have with their customer service..... they actually sent the control board USPS so it again took 2 weeks to reach me. On top of that, it had been poorly packaged so when it did finally arrive it was severely damaged. Let me just say here that I have been in manufacturing for better than 20 years and I understand that even the best manufacturers have defects. I wish I hadn't been the one to receive the defect, but someone has to get it and it was my turn apparently. Anyway, I contacted customer service one more time. They were very apologetic about the shipping mistake and the poor packaging. The representative (Adam) was very concerned about me having a good experience and so he sent me another entire grill. It was shipped UPS and even with the Christmas holiday reached me within a week. I took the entire side box assembly from the new one and installed it in mine. It now worked as expected and I've been enjoying it since then. The only problem I have now is disposing of the extra parts!! As far as operation goes, it is identical to the much more expensive Treager. The positions of the knob are identical and it hold heat just as well. I've cooked ribs, burgers, chicken, and even a ham and they have all been wonderful. I cannot yet comment on the longevity of the product as I haven't been using it very long, but the customer service was good overall and that is really important in today's world. I gave four stars because of the customer service and I'll update this review after a few months regarding more of my experience. That having been said, I would not hesitate to purchase this product again.
