Great for large cookies!

This is a great portioner. It’s sturdy, strong, performs well, and has a good solid feel in the hand. I have only owned the #16 for a couple months, but I've owned a #40 for two years and it has held up very well. Despite the mechanism, it is not difficult to clean: just press down on the handle to clean beneath the moving arc, then put it through the dishwasher. The #16 makes large, attractive, bakery-sized cookies that are about 3 to 4 inches in diameter, with most in the 3.5 inch range. I find this to be a great size for bake sales, but rather too large for regular household use. For cookies we’re going to eat at home, I use the Vollrath #40 (3/4 ounce) which makes cookies in the 2.5 inch range (give or take half an inch). My only complaint about the Vollrath scoop is that they don’t make a left-handed version. This is a strongly right-handed tool. I am left-handed and I usually hold this scoop in my left hand, scoop the food, and then reach up at an angle with my index and middle fingers to pull down on the lever to release the food. This is awkward. The angle I have to hold it at means that the “power sweep” of the arc is from the bottom of the scoop to the top, rather than top to bottom, which makes it a little more difficult to free sticky substances. I sometimes switch the tool to my right hand for the release, which makes for an easier release but feels more awkward to me as my right hand is weaker and less accurate than my left one. But these are small issues to me compared with the high quality and performance of this scoop.

The Best Quality, I Own #16, #20 and Will Buy More!

I bake a lot of cupcakes because my children have food allergies and I have to custom bake their cupcakes. I purchased the yellow #20 two years ago, and it has never let me down. Although I recommend taking better care of your scoop, I can honestly say that this scooper has been dropped, been left sitting in water, been run through a dishwasher multiple times and still looks and works like brand new. My husband and my children shun all the other scoops in our home and are always hunting for this scoop bc it's the best for ice cream, too. I just purchased the larger #16 and received the same great quality authentic Vollrath product, made in the USA. They have earned my loyalty. I will definitely be purchasing additional scoopers and sizes. For the couple of people that received something other than the authentic Vollrath brand scooper, just initiate a return with Amazon, and indicate that you did not receive the correct product. Problem solved. It happens sometimes - giant warehouse, human with many orders to fill goes to the wrong bin, picks and ships you the wrong product. If you have received the authentic Vollrath brand, I believe you'll agree with the other five-star reviews, and like me, you will always trust the Vollrath brand. Major quality control issues

So Vollrath is a top notch scooper brand. I have had the cream one for years and love it. When my other low end brand muffin scooper died, I knew I wanted to replace it with a Vollrath branded one. I also bought a black one to replace my cookie scoop that keeps getting out of alignment. It seems as sturdy as my old cream one, but I'd say that it is lacking in other areas like smoothness and seamlessness. There are also some metal discolorations that looks like it could turn to rust (in contrast my cream one #10 shows zero metal discolorations and I even wash it in the dishwasher). I would say that quality has gone down. Also, I had to buy two because the first one had issues with the metal scraper not being lined up properly and the thumb pusher catching on its gear. I had to buy four of the black ones (#30, I believe) before finding a suitable one. So the company has major quality control issues! Be prepared to buy multiples and then choose the best looking one to keep and return the others as defective. Not fun but it's how I was able to find suitable ones. I know those are all pretty disappointing statements. However, I'm crossing my fingers that these will last as long as my super old cream colored Vollrath scoop because I have had such good experience. Time will tell....but I'm obviously optimistic! :)

I thought I wanted an ice cream scoop

When I went searching for this, my wife told me she wanted a quarter cup ice cream scoop with a thumb scraper on it. So I got out my Google-fu and did a search. Little did I know that there were technical terms I needed to learn. First, it's called a Disher, and a scoop is something else...and we already have a scoop. Then I learned that there is a size I want for 2 ounces...a #16. There was a little confusion on other sizes, but #16 was the final choice. THEN I discovered that the sizes are color coded! So I wanted a #16, blue-handled Disher! This is the one my Google-fu settled on. It is working very well for our Sunday morning pancakes, and will serve very well for ice cream this summer. It goes through the dishwasher with no problems, and stores well.

works well, but still a challenge with hard pack ice cream

After breaking two ice cream scoops on hard pack ice cream, I am always on the look out for a sturdy and easy to use scoop that is also dishwasher safe. My boyfriend says these are just like the ones they used in the ice cream shop where he worked as a kid, and they definitely seem to be the classic scoop. I never have had to use the scoop release trigger, things just kinda plop right out. The hard rubber grip is comfortable and definitely helps when trying to get out the hardest of ice creams. However, the rounded edge is not great at "breaking ground" and falls short compared to our square edged OXO ice cream scoop that never fails with hard ice cream. **UPDATE** Bought a second one (size 30 - 1 oz, black handle) and love the action just as much as our original larger one with the blue handle. Between the two, I am set for baking and ice cream. I find the blue one is perfect for divying out perfect portions of batter for standard size cupcakes. I also use it for very large cookies. The smaller one is great for filling my mini muffin tin and for making drop biscuits. Again, they are not great for breaking into a hard ice cream, but are fine once it has sat out for a few minutes.
