It works but there are limitations
It definitely works. To save you time I have provided more specific information in the paragraphs below, which I entitled Scenario, Distance, Motion Detection, Radius, Ultrasonic, Flashing Strobe Lights, Customer Service, and Rating. Scenario: There's a small city-owned trash dumpster near my home and people like to feed stray cats there. The cats use my yard as their bedroom, bathroom, and playground. It wasn't unusual to find 5-8 cats in my yard throughout the day/night. The house is surrounded by a combination concrete and wrought iron fence, which is 5 feet high with the first 18 inches being concrete and the remaining height consisting of wrought iron, which the cats can walk through or jump over -- the fence is no deterrent. Distance: Using a tape measure, I determined the maximum detection distance is about 30 feet. Motion Detection: At the maximum setting, the motion detector activates at about 30 feet, but it won't activate if a barrier, such as a fence, glass, wall, etc., is between the device and the entity initiating the motion. Radius: The detection level from right to left is approximately 130 degrees and it's conical. If the motion is behind the device or to the side it won't work, it must be within about 130 degrees and even within the detection range, it won't detect motion if there's a barrier such as a fence, wall, glass, etc, between the device and the entity initiating the motion. Ultrasonic: It's not ultrasonic but it's not loud either. I can't hear it at a distance of 30 feet, but at about 15 feet I can hear it. It's a very low clicking-type sound, which is activated when something enters the range of the motion detector. It's not annoying and it confirms that it's working. Flashing strobe Lights: The lights lags behind the motion detector activation. When the motion detector activates, first the motion detector turns a blue color and within about a second or two, I can hear the "ultrasonic" clicking sound. A couple of seconds later the strobe lights flash . Customer Service from the Seller (Four Corners Dist.) and the Developer (Hoont): Prior to receiving the device I asked Four Corners Dist, via an email through the Amazon.com website several questions regarding the distance/radius/strobe light, and I got a response within 24 hours, but the answers were generic and essentially echoed that on the Amazon.com website. I then contacted the developer (Hoot) by visiting their website and using their online email to ask similar questions to the ones I asked the seller. Hoont didn't respond. Rating: It worked right out of the box, without the batteries being charged. I'm an American residing overseas and I received the device via Amazon Global in 10 days, at no additional postage charge. It's been a week and instead of seeing multiple cats in the yard throughout the day, I saw one cat on the 2nd day, and one on the 3rd day, but they didn't hang around. I haven't seen any cats in the yard since then, but I do see them (in fewer numbers) outside the fence. As previously noted the motion detector can't penetrate the concrete fence and it isn't pointed toward the fence, but it still seems to somehow be deterring, but not completely scaring off cats in that area. I am considering buying a couple more and focusing them on the dumpster outside the fence, but the problem is that the device doesn't have a hook to hang it from a fence or tree; it comes with a stake which is placed in the ground. That's a problem because the solar panel needs to face the sun, so without a hook it can't be attached to a tree or fence. If the developer provided better customer service, instructions, and more insight regarding the radius/distance/etc, and if it came with a hook as well as a stake, l would have given it 5 stars. Update: heavy rain caused 2 of these devices to malfunction, they are now useless, so I am changing the ratung from 4 to 3 stars because drvices on the garden/yard should be weather proof.

UPDATE: It worked...but for only a while
UPDATE, 5/28/17: Well, after the glowing review I posted below, raving about the great initial results I obtained from this product, I am sorry to report that the foxes (it WAS a fox and her kits) have gotten used to the repellers I installed and have resumed living and digging beneath my porch. In fact, the mother fox dug a new tunnel entrance just 2-3 feet in front of one of the repellers! It seems that the devices initially did spook her away. But now she's back, and in fact I watched her kits playing right right in front of the two working repellers. For that reason, I regret that I must downgrade my initial 5-star rave review to only 3 stars. I give them that many stars because I think the repellers will probably work on some animals for at least a while. But they may become accustomed to the repellers' presence, as these foxes did. I'll now have to take more drastic measures this fall, after they leave the den, by putting in an elaborate fence to keep them out of the crawlspace beneath the porch. Here was my original glowing review: ----------------------- I was desperate. A critter -- probably a fox -- had dug a network of tunnels beneath our sun porch, kicking out a huge pile of dirt, and threatening the foundation. (See the accompanying photo. You can see the hole to the right of the stairs, and if you look closely between the steps, you may see a second large hole underneath the crawl space of the porch.) I tried liquid animal repellent on a rag tied to a tether, and thrown down into the hole. The animal merely dragged it out of the hole and into the yard, to the full length of the tether. I threw mothballs down there, too. The animal kicked them out and covered them with dirt, only adding to the growing pile of dirt, while probably digging the tunnel system even deeper. I then hired an expensive trapper, but the animal evaded the trap -- though the trap's presence seemed to scare it a way for a few days. During that period -- and after some comparison shopping -- I ordered the Hoont Ultrasonic Animal Repeller, based on its features and glowing customer reviews. It arrived the next day via Amazon Prime. I assembled it easily within about 15 minutes and placed it out in the yard, right next to the porch steps. It was considerably smaller than I had envisioned, thus unobtrusive when placed in the yard. After that, I filled in the holes the animal had dug, smoothed down the soil to reveal any new tracks...and waited. For the first few days, I saw no evidence of the critter returning. This morning (Feb. 6), however, I saw some tracks at the outer edge of the dirt patch. However, the animal did not approach closer. My experiments with the product's settings showed that it is highly sensitive to nearby motion, and I have little doubt that the strobe and ultrasonic burst scared it away as soon as it came within range. I can't know yet whether this will be a permanent solution to my problem. However, the early signs are encouraging. We live on the edge of a marsh and get a lot of nuisance animals digging in our yard and eating our plants. I'm hopeful that the Hoont Animal Repeller will continue to protect our home from further damage.

Moderately effective for deer
I have five of these posted in my yard to keep the deer from eating the shrubbery. I think they are moderately successful. They don't keep all the deer out all the time, but only most of the deer most of the time. We still have occasional shrubs eaten. One thing I have found is that the effective range of the devices is up to maybe 10-15 feet. It will trigger from motion at much longer distances, but doesn't seem to deter the deer at such distances. Hence five units to cover my relatively small front yard. For some folks, another benefit might be keeping kids and younger adults out of your yard. Most such creatures can hear the screeching sound the device makes on activation and they don't like it! I used to use a motion triggered sprinkler and it worked very well deterring the deer, but constant triggering because of wind in the bushes meant everything was always wet. It also encouraged younger two-legged creatures in the neighborhood to run in our yard and try to avoid getting wet.

Sounds can be heard
It performs as expected, but the clicking is very loud. We have at our front down and our kids complain it’s annoying.
