The sharpener seems more flimsy than older models. It works better than hand held sharpeners.

I like the size gauge where the pencil is put in. The mounting screws are junk as they are not large enough to hold the sharpener in place. The small hand held sharpeners do not put a point on the end of the pencil like this does.

Good unit for shop

I rated this as a 3 due to the fact that the bezel of the unit isn't soldered and it was in 5 separate pieces and fortunately, I was able to figure out how to put it all back together. The sheet metal just sort of snaps together and once assemble looked good but it definitely would be a better, more rugged unit if soldered together which I will probably do to this one. It sharpened well to a very sharp point. Mounting the sharpener was a little difficult as the mounting holes are awkward to access with a screwdriver when mounting. Mounted it looks good and functions adequately. I don't plan to use it much, just to sharpen pencils in my shop so this should do well enough for my purposes. If for a classroom, I would probably invest in a more expensive, and rugged unit.

Colored pencils no problem!!

I just sharpened two large pencil cases worth of colored pencils and this sharpener mounted to a desk (all 3 holes) had NO PROBLEM sharpening every single one!! So much better than any electric sharpener I’ve ever tried! So happy with this old school sharpener! ????????????

Semi Old School Works Best

Having 2 small children, one starting Kindergarten a reliable and easy to use pencil sharpener is a MUST! I grew up with a heavy duty metal one in our basement and after 30+ years of use it still works like a champ. I purchased this model because of the all steel construction and NO plastic parts that can break in the mechanism. It works great. I'm sorry to see that it doesn't have 2 grinding gears like the older school models do, but it seems to work just fine with a little more lever turning than I recall from the double gear models. I discarded the enclosed screws and used some beefier ones that will hold better. I think my only two critisims of this sharpener as of now is that when mounted to a wall you can hang the shaving collector vertical (up and down) on the unit but it tends to want to twist off a bit while using it, so each time you have to snug it back in place, more of an annoyance than a flaw. Also with the single gear grinding it tends to shave more wood off one side of the pencil than the other, which sometimes causes the lead to break on that side easier or makes it harder to write on the woodier side, but that may also be due to cheaper pencil construction these days. Overall I'm happy with it, and I hope it holds up to the many days of school pencil sharpening to come. ADDITIONAL - 11-24-11: Have used this sharpener now for a number of months. It still appears to be holding up well. Had to use wall anchors for the screws as the twisting motion of having the unit mounted vertically was pulling it out of the wall. Also learned the trick to getting the single grinding gear to leave a clean cut around the lead. Sharpen holding the pencil still until you feel very little resistance on the handle, meaning the general shaperned shape has been cut. Then while spining the handle slowly rotate the pencil around in the hole so bascially the grinder will shave off any extra wood left on the lead. Over all still happy with the purchase and would still recommend to anyone wanting a good sharpener for school aged children.

Looks like the old days, but not quite.

Was looking for a heavy duty sharpener for my wood shop. My dad had one that looked very similar, about 50 years ago. This is NOT my father’s pencil sharpener. This one pales in comparison. The metal is much thinner and more I anemic than the antique, it has only one sharpener cylinder inside, vs. 2 in my Dad’s, and in order to attach the “Drum” or reservoir part, I had to reshape the hole that the cutter slides into. The sharpener was shipped in its original, very thin box, inside a padded shipper envelope. Upon arrival, the box was opened inside the envelope and the sharpener was in pieces. I needed the sharpener, so I chose make the necessary repairs myself and keep it rather than return it. It does sharpen pencils nicely, though, which is it saving grace.
