Clearly Superior Design
I'm relatively new to using a trimmer - within a few years. I use a Stihl FS111R, a FS90, and occasionally a grandma's very weak Makita battery powered model for grass and dandelions at her house. Prior to using this SS Optimum .095, I've primarily used two different kinds of line: Stihl .105 round line - only used with the Stihl trimmers. It works for cutting bigger weeds and things, but only at high RPM's. It will cut grass, but not cleanly and not a lower RPM's. It also frays very easily upon contact with fences and woody shrubs. Even worse, since it's so stiff, I've often had to completely re-feed the head after hitting larger weeds because the line would sheer right at the feed head's holes. Ace Hardware .095 hex/star - used with the FS111R and the Makita. While it cuts grass OK, it splits and frays during normal usage. If you hit a concrete wall or a fence, you're completely cooked. Even in normal usage no-hard-contact areas, it's very irritating to constantly have to bump the feed to keep working in areas that have lots of grass (not even weeds). But on the topic of weeds with this line, forget it. Cutting them down can work, but it's not at all practical when you get one "whack" of a few dandelions and have to continually bump the head to resume cutting again. Now, I'll get to the point. The SS Optimum in .095 is clearly superior in all but one condition compared to the Stihl .105 round. It completely puts the Ace .095 hex/star to shame. How is it superior? 1. There is no fraying of the line. Period. Not even when running into fence, concrete or woody shrubs/weeds. 2. It cuts grass like a lawn mower - no frays in the cut. Even with the wimpy Makita. Better yet, I don't have to run the Stihl trimmers at full blown Mach 3 speeds to get it to cut weeds. Half throttle is enough to cut grass and most weeds. Bigger weeds that are more...leafy...are also no match, but require more RPM's as expected. Their cuts are also clean and do not fray the line. 3. I find that this line does "grab" much more than the other two brands, but it's not as much a problem because I've found myself running at lower speeds. It's not empirical, but I feel as if I've used far less fuel with this line than the other two lines. Operating speeds are allowed to be much lower and much more consistent. I can feather the throttle and get work done at twice the pace with half the gas. The only downside with this line is in it's ability to edge - and I believe that is a limitation of the size and not the line itself. If I used the same SS Optimum, but in .105 or thicker, it would perform just as well as the .095 in cutting and weed whacking, but surpass the Stihl .105 round line in edging. Try this out. You won't be disappointed.
