Pretty decent, better than you may have heard
First off, when I bought this stone, it was cheaper - I spent about [...] on it (I don't remember if that included shipping). So its not as good a deal now, but maybe the price will go down again. What I got when I opened the packaging was in fact the 6000 grit large Suehiro stone (to clarify, this is NOT the same as the 5000 grit Suehiro Rika stone, which I haven't tried but many people seem to like). I don't know why it is not marked as such, and I doubt this was a shipping error - I suspect that this product is not listed as such for some sort of licensing reason. The product pictured sure looks like my stone. At any rate, this review will assume that others are getting the same product as me - the Suehiro stone. I know that these stones have not been favored by a lot of knife enthusiasts since Dave Martel (big sharpener) said he didn't like them a few years ago. But I didn't know that at the time I bought this. And I have to say, these aren't bad at all. They put a nice finish on a stone if you don't go any higher. They work reasonably fast. They dish slowly and are easy to flatten when wet. Feedback isn't perfect but it's not bad. Pros: Decent finish from a 6000 stone. Dishes slowly - slower than a comparable King stone. Fairly quick polishing. Cons: Feedback is only okay. Needs a pretty long soak to work well - at least 15 minutes, 20-30 is better. Very easy to gouge. At the price listed, you might as well go buy a Naniwa Superstone. At the price I bought it, this was a good deal for a good stone. Finally - in case anyone has wandered over to these reviews from looking at Chefs Choice sharpeners and various roller contraptions, keep in mind that my review is mostly comparing this stone to other synthetic Japanese waterstones. Compared to a lot of the sharpening junk on the market, this and other waterstones are a superior option, clearly 5 stars. Edit: I reviewed the 6000 grit steelex/suehiro stone. Not the 1200 grit. I have never tried the 1200 grit, and anyone who has much experience with waterstones knows that a single manufacturer can make stones of wildly differing qualities at different grits. I'd appreciate if Amazon did not use the same reviews for two completely different products.

A good medium grit water stone
I've been using this stone since 2010, about 5 years now, and it has held up well. Due to its thickness, I expect it to last me another couple decades, if not longer(I use my stones about twice a month or so). First, it is worth mentioning that this stone is not unpleasant to use. What do I mean by this? Well, some stones feel like nails on a chalkboard when using them. Using this stone is a much more pleasant and smoother experience. For my system, this is typically the stone I begin with when re-sharpening knives that I've already sharpened in the past. With new knives, I tend to need a rougher grit to begin with, since most factory edges have very rough grind marks, and the edge geometry usually needs adjusting to my preference. If the knife you're working on, like many knives my friends ask me to sharpen, is so dull and worn it has big visible chips in the edge, then you will want to start with a rough grit stone, not a medium grit like this one. Also, since some other reviewers comments may lead to confusion, to clarify, this is not a "finishing" stone. It is a medium grit stone. You can use this as your final grit, and it will leave a toothier edge, but this stone will not establish a "mirror polish." For that, you need something along the lines of a 6000 or higher grit water stone(8000+ is even better). If you want a complete system, then I would look for a rough grit stone, something around 250~500-for grinding in a new edge geometry/grinding away big chips, a medium grit(1000~1200)-start here for knives that have a good established edge geometry and don't have big chips, and a finishing stone(6000+)-for a mirror polished hair popping edge. The only ding I can give it(hence the 4 star rating), is the price. There currently seem to be better value options available. When I purchased this stone 5 years ago, I payed less than $20 for it($19.73). At the time of this review(June, 2015), the price is $32.40. Currently, the #1200 King Deluxe stone(http://www.amazon.com/King-Deluxe-Medium-Grain-Sharpening/dp/B0016VE6D4/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t/182-8407115-4567522) is going for $21.97, and there are other options as well. Aside from that, as long as you understand the purpose of this stone as mentioned above, this will work well for you.

exellent but
The product was delivered on time, even earlier, the quality of the stone is really one of the best i've ever seen. This stone must be used to polish the edge of the knife, is not for sharpening and suit perfectly to bring my japanese set of knifes to a mirror polished edge, i was able to make my Shun looks like new. But: i was expecting the supporting base to be some other material, for the price that cost would have been nice if was some treated wood, but instead is a cheap plastic like the one you can find in a kid toy, and i won't be surprised if will break after a while, after that the small stone that came with the package, it's not the best quality at all, has broken apart as soon as i dropped on the table from 10 cm high, making impossible to use it even before i used the very first time. And btw, this small stone suppose to be rub on the surface of the big stone after use to make it even, as the movement of the knife on it can create waves, but in order to do that you need a stone of the same grit or slightly less, this one that came in the package is too rough and not suitable even if was made of good material. My conclusion is that i would definitively recommend this product to someone who know how to use a stone of this manufacture, but i would wait to find it on sale as the price for it is a bit too expansive, and i guess there are other good quality stones out there much cheaper

This is 320 grit
This is actually the Suehiro Chemical 320 grit. The product number is 800. I knew this going in after some research, so I got what I was after. This is an exceptionally soft and very muddy stone. Once you lap down past the sealer, it is very aggressive, muddy, and great for wide bevels. Doing a small edge bevel on a knife will be difficult without a lot of skill with angle and pressure.

works and wears well
Does what I expected. It's a great size so longevity won't be an issue either.
