I can cut the hair off my arm after using this
People who use my knives ask how I do it. I have sent them as gifts to family as well and tell them what I am about to tell you. The best way to use them is once you have a sharp end on both sides, just run the knife in a slicing motion at 90 degrees to the handle on ONE EDGE ONLY for a month or so and then switch edges to even out over time. It makes it sharp enough to cut the hair off your arm and tomatoes are perfectly sliced. I hold it straight up in front of my face to get a pefect view of the knife to set it at 90 degrees to the handle which I hold sticking straight up. Do not think about the rods, just handle and knife at 90 degrees to each other. I slice from left to right not moving down or up the rod just slicing across it. It only takes about 6 to 10 times to have it super sharp. I have done this for 2 years since I bought it from REI for $20+. When you quickly slice make sure your hand is not choked up towards the rod bc if you miss a rod you could slice your hand so hold the sharpener at the end :) The 700 grit will get you to a base edge, but understand that people use 3000+ grit to sharpen their knives. The stone will quickly change your knife edge! Note: I am a nurse - Using a glass cutting board is the most sanitary, but the hardest on your knife and will dull it the fastest, even after one use. So what do you do? Their is no one perfect cutting board to easily get a hold of. I really wish I could find a reasonably priced commercial grade "rubber" (forgot the type) cutting board. The rubber seals back up and does not leave groves to become contaminated, but is soft on your knives. Wood can be sanded down and some are antibacterial to a certain degree. We use a red plastic board for meat and other colors for veg/etc. and use a dishwasher to help sanitize them.

Once You Get The Hang Of It, This Will Give You Razor Sharp Edges
This is a fine sharpener and it will get your blades to razor edges. It does take some getting used to, but if you practice, you'll get a feel for it and start improving. Now that I got the hang of it, I can get razor sharp blades. When you use the fine stones for a smooth blade, hold it vertical during the entire stroke. You'll probably be inclined to lean the blade the way the stone is leaning. Don't do that. Keep it vertical and slide down and pull back. Alternate strokes also - don't run five strokes on one side the the other. Go back and forth for each stroke. Using the diamond sharpener, lay the blade at roughly a 45 degree angle. Push it away from you like you are trying to cut a sliver off the sharpener. Do this four or five times, then flip it over. When you flip it, pull the knife toward you. Again, just imagine you're trying to slice off a sliver of the sharpener. If you want to see it demonstrated, search for this sharpener on YouTube; there are a lot of good videos. Since all of my blades are now razor sharp, I gotta say this is an excellent product. UPDATE: So it did get good sharpness on some already semi sharp knives. I sharpened about 12 or so and then cleaned it with soapy water. I had a knife that was extremely dull and wanted to see if this system could take it from very dull to razor sharp. It did not improve the blade at all and doesn't sharpen anything anymore. UPDATE 2: Well, I believe it may be my fault as to why it didn't sharpen the dull knife. I noticed it's ceramic. I don't think this sharpener will work on ceramic knives. So I dulled a steel one on a brick and used the carbide and ceramic rods on this sharpener and it did get the blade to hair shaving sharp. I fine tuned it with an ultra fine rod, then a steel and it is extremely sharp

Great for starter self sharpeners!
Haven't attempted sharpening on stone or other surfaces since was a kid. A friend had one of those belt sharpeners. It did a fair at best job for my not so good folding and camping straight knives so decided need learn what techniques I was missing, or, if my knives were just too cheap to be properly sharpened, or, if the belt machine was incapable of really doing a thorough job (especially on the tips). After reading the reviews for this and watching a couple Youtube videos (i.e. national show and tell) felt for the price I'd give it a try. It took a few hours and iterations to learn on various knives, including some good steel kitchen knives. But by the third leg up on the learning curve the kitchen knives (which started very dull) are very sharp. The cheap folders and straight knives are razor sharp except for the tips. Was able to use this device to repair both of the points on the cheap knives from rounded to sharp. I think with a fourth round I can improve both the sharpness of all my knives and my technique. Then, if get obsessed about it, either move on to test on a better stone or sharpening system for comparison, or, try to see if learned techniques apply to getting more out of the belt sharpener. Oh yeah, fished a good long strip of medium heft leather out of the local Tandy Leather store scrap sale piles (they didn't even charge for it, great folks) and finished off all the knives above with a stropping (learned on Youtube of course). Seems to make a difference. Thanks to others for the reviews that got me started.

Smith's 3 in one knife sharpener
Neat and clear in use. Compact. Works! Took a while to arrive, but came on the predicted date, so no complaint there. As it comprises the 3 different sharpening media,it is versatile. V. fair price . Thanks. BP

Your first "good" sharpener.
I'm going to open this review by saying that this sharpener really makes me want to buy a Spyderco Sharpmaker (when I can justify spending that much). HOWEVER, this sharpener is amazing for the price. The major fallbacks in my opinion are that the stones are a little short, and it only has one grit of ceramic stone. Otherwise, this Smith's Stone set works flawlessly. The one I received was also black and not yellow, which is a plus in my book. I took my used and abused Spyderco Tenacious (which I had been keeping "sharp" with a regular stone) and put in 5 minutes of work with this sharpener. It brought it back to shaving sharp! Much sharper than I was managing on my own. I also took as many old pocket knives that I could find and ran them through the same process, and each one was brought back to being able to take hair off my arm. Well worth the money, and the smaller size makes it portable. It makes me want the Sharpmaker because it offers more angles/grits/longer stones, etc... But until then, I'll continue using this one without issue! It's a great introductory sharpener to those looking for a quick and easy way to bring life back into those old blades.
