Fluid holds onto tiny air bubbles
Hydraulic fluid is pretty much hydraulic fluid, right? Well, time to change the fluid in my Seastar steering system and rather than pay the new high price of the Seastar product I decided to purchase the Starbright fluid and save the money. I had 1/2 a quart of the Seastar fluid so I used it first to help flush out the used fluid. My set up uses a clear water bottle with the bottom cut off inverted so it is easy to hang and easy to see what’s going on. The biggest difference between the two fluids: Seastar was slight amber color, pour it in as fast as you want and no tiny bubbles form. Starbrite was very clear but even pouring it slowly hundreds if not thousands of tiny little bubbles formed in the fluid. This concerns me because air will compress and can give a loose or mushy feel. Evan after 1/2 hour wait the tiny little bubbles were still rising from what I first poured. I went ahead after waiting between pours, steering feels solid and tight so I’m really not sure how much those tiny guys are going to amount to but people need to keep this in mind.

It Works
Just for anyone curious to the color of this oil, it is clear transparent oil. It is not brownish like motor oil or red like ATF fluid. It is definitely clear.

Works well, it’s hydraulic fluid.
It works. My motor moves nice and smooth again. It’s hydraulic fluid what more can you ask for? Used on my 125 Merc Saltwater OB.

did the trick.
bought a boat that had been sitting for about 6 years.. tilt or trim has not been used in that long.. once i got the boat home and started to work on it and get it running the tilt and trim did work but sounded like it was struggling a little bit with operationg. pump was making some funny noises.. drained and replaced with this fluid and after a few times of moving the T&T up and down a few times it sounds normal and with normal speed and cleared up the issue.. worked great for me!!

Seems to be good hydraulic power trim/tilt oil. It would be better if the bottle had a little extended nozzle tip to make it easier to get the oil into the fill hole. Thankfully, such an extended cap that came on the Motomaster SAE90 gear oil fit right on top of this bottle (I haven't used the cap for gear oil, since I use a lower unit pump for that)
