A little hard to prime but seems excellent
For me this was a very easy install. I had previously used pumps from harbor freight which came with a pressure tank. Having had to replace those pumps approximately every 3 years or less the most recent supposedly improved green model barely making 2 years due to failing tanks, pressure switches, pump motors, etc. that being said I wanted something more heavy duty. I purchased this. The pump company made me believe it could be of cheaper quality as I had never heard of it before. Install was easy for me as I have had plenty of experience with other models as stated over the last ten years. I generally cheat with priming. This is easily done by using a washing machine hose, garden hose, and hooking it from your neighbors hose spigot (if they are close by enough, and don’t mind) and to your hose spigot. Turn theirs on, ensure power is off to your pump, turn your hose spigot on. This will allow water to back-flow and fill the lines and prime the pump. After a few minutes you would turn off your spigot. Power on the pump and see that it’s pumping water. Generally removing any plugs is unnecessary with this process. If you have water pumping generally you’re done and clean up the hoses, thank your neighbor, etc. This generally works excellent and I can have any pump I have tried it on primed in a matter of maybe 10 minutes without trying to carry buckets into my woods to where my pump is located. With this particular pump I had water pumping at good pressure for about 5 minutes. Then it pulsed, then I had no water again. This was repeated about 4 times. No change. I had never had this with any other pump brand. Thinking it had failed I was ready to contact customer support. I decided the pump housing was larger so maybe it was withholding some air some how causing it to lose pressure. I ended up removing both the vent plug with the spigot on, at my end allowing it to still back fill with water. It let out a few air bubbles. It still found air and lost prime once again. At that point having taken a few hours for what would generally take a matter of no more than twenty minutes on a bad day with other brands I loosened the priming plug. Lots more air came out. I put it back in after allowing a water to run out of it I then turned off the outside spigot and powered on the pump. I ran it about 25 minutes with a little air still coming out but it has been two days now, it’s pumping well, and hasn’t lost prime again. I think with any larger pump housing you may have a harder time priming them possibly. It has decent pressure. I can’t really compare it to anything aside from the 1HP harbor freight models. As compared to them, this is far better. Also having your own quality pressure tank will certainly be better than the cheap harbor freight models. The quantity of water and pressure it provides is good. I am wondering if the 30/50 pressure switch could be changed to a 40/60 and it still be able to pump at the higher pressure. The current included pressure switch is about the going rate for most shallow well type pumps though.

So Far, So Good. I Like This Pump.
We have lived in our house for 26+ years. We have a shallow well (20'-25' deep) with a well pump & pressure tank located in our basement. I bought the Red Lion RJS-50-PREM a few months ago as my hot spare ahead of potential failure of the installed pump, and installed it last week when the prior pump failed. Until installing this pump, I have always used a Goulds J5 pump. Since the Goulds pumps are now getting quite expensive I decided to shop for an alternative. I chose this Red Lion pump based on ratings and reviews I read. This pump has the same sized input (1.25") and output (1") as the Goulds pump. Although, I needed to adjust the positioning of the output plumbing a little bit, as compared to the positioning with the Goulds pump, in order to have it connect to the house properly. Using new PVC pipe and fittings, the installation was fairly quick & easy. The pump out of the box was set for 230v, but was easily changed to the 115v I use. I have now used this Red Lion pump for the past week. Overall, I think the daily performance of this pump matches the Goulds pump. I'll need to wait and see how long it lasts and performs. Also, this Red Lion pump is more quiet than the Goulds pump, which is a nice plus.

Not terribly impressed
Unit arrived well packed and complete. Pump was bolted to a 1/4" laminated board sized to fit the double-walled box. Installed easy enough. Has a low raspy sound similar to a slightly worn idler pulley in a car. Not sure if this is its normal sound or has faulty bearings. In comparison, my 20 year-old outgoing Flotec FP4332-08 1HP pump sounded more like a V6 engine at full throttle... and just as loud. Two install issues I had where: a) it took a lot of effort to loosen the prime plug... it shouldn't have been that tight since it will be immediately accessed before first use. So make sure you break it loose before installing it. b) the tiny pressure sampler hose between the pump and the pre-installed pressure switch has plastic nuts. I tried to change the switch with a low-cutoff equipped unit (to protect the pump from running dry) and stopped short of doing that when the plastic nut showed quick signs of deformation. I'll probably get a replacement hose with metal nuts then swap pressure switches. Either that or attach my pressure switch to the tank tee and run wiring there. The pump is not as efficient as the outgoing Flotec. They are both rated 1 HP output. However, the outgoing one was pulling 13 Amps while this unit pulls 17.5 Amps. Had to upgrade the circuit breaker from 20 to 25 Amps. Luckily, the existing wiring was 10-guage which is good to 30 Amps max. The install was 115V, drawing water from a concrete cistern right outside the pump's basement location. Cistern outlet is about 2 feet above pump level. I installed two new 32-gallon pressure tanks (to serve a 5-bathroom mountain home) and adjusted the pressure switch to 40/55 PSI. With this setup, pump runs two full minutes for a full pressure charge and get about 18 gallons of draw down. Used PEX piping with SharkBite couplers to link with existing copper pipes.

Strong so far
I replaced an old HF 1HP pump with this. Despite only being 3/4HP it primed immediately and keeps my irrigation system fed at about 45 psi with 3-5 heads per zone without any issue. My old pump never primed that easy. I'm impressed so far. Time will tell if it lasts but as of now, I'm loving this purchase.

Great replacement.
Clear instructions, get exactly what they said and adapted easily to a 40 year old Craftsman. Once I got system to completely bleed air it is so much quieter than old pump and more efficient! Great buy and cheaper than any of the local companies. Ace, Home Depot, Lowes.

Great pump, rebuild parts available
This is a good quality jet pump. Rebuild parts are readily available, unlike many of the pumps from China that you throw away after they wear out. The three warranty is only OK, as Red Lion will only supply you with one part or kit. My first pump had pump housing threads that corroded or eroded so the pump nozzle would not seat, this also caused the impeller and diffuser to fail. Red Lion supplied a new pump case, but not the rebuild kit under warranty. Overall I would, recommend this pump.

I like the brand. Have had good service in the past with their pumps.Cast iron is a necessity.

GRRRRR... another defective product on delivery
The media could not be loaded. Just wasted two hours of my life installing this piece of crap pump to replace another piece of crap that only lasted an hour. This one went 30 seconds. I picked the "premium" more expensive option this time too. I have the same defective pressure switch as others have reported going back THREE YEARS, and they are still shipping them! UPDATE: the pump comes wired for 230v and that's what I was using. I remembered the old Square D pressure switch was still attached to the piping system. I ran the power back through that pressure switch, then attached the two live wires to the two wired connectors in the Red Lion pressure switch thus bypassing the Red Lion pressure switch, and the pump runs great. I am returning the pump and have orders a replacement. I will see if the second one is defective too.

Exact product l was looking for at a fair price.
