Great Beans!
I bought this to replace my Grandmothers that I dropped & broke! Once this is broken in after a few uses it'll be just as great as my. old one! Which by the way was well over 75 years old!! Amazing!

No problem with the lid
Large enough to bake 2lbs of navy beans or pea beans. Can be washed in the dishwasher too. Please do yourself a favor and be aware that this pot is to be used IN the oven only and NOT on the range top. Also note that the manufacturer recommends the oven NOT be preheated before placing the pot in the oven. I don't know what's up with all the comments about the lid handle being difficult to grip. Perhaps the handle is a new design on my pot? Due to all of those comments #1, I was hesitant to purchase this item and #2, the first thing I did after opening the box was grab two different thickness pot holders and attempt to open the lid. Well, even with my slightly arthritic 70 year old hands I had no problem at all! The only reason I did not give this item a 5 star rating is because the thickness of the ceramic is not as thick as that of the Fox Run 0350COM bean pot, which I also own. But, there are times when I need the greater capacity so I'll keep them both! Boston Baked Beans Ingredients 1lb dried navy or great northern beans 1/2lb salt pork or, 1/2- 3/4lb bacon; cut into 1" cubes 1 medium onion; diced 1/4cup brown sugar; packed 1/2cup full flavored molasses 1tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1tsp dry mustard 1/4tsp black pepper 1tsp salt –added for last 30 minutes of baking Directions: Soak beans in water to cover by 2 inches for 12-24 hours - Dissolve 1tsp of baking soda in a small glass of hot water and add to beans After soaking, be sure to thoroughly drain and rinse the beans until all the scum is washed away. Place the beans in a large saucepan and cover with fresh water. Heat to boiling; boil for 2 minutes, then remove from heat and let stand for 1 hour. Skim away any foam that may come to the top. If necessary, add water to cover beans and, if desired, add 4 crushed garlic cloves to the water. Simmer uncovered (DO NOT BOIL or beans will burst) for 20 - 50 minutes or until no longer hard. Drain beans, reserving the liquid. Place 1/2 of salt pork/bacon at the bottom of the baking pot; add all of the onion, then the beans and the remaining salt pork/bacon on top. Stir together remaining items with 1 cup of the reserved liquid and pour over beans. Add enough of the reserved liquid to almost cover the beans. Cover and bake at 250 degrees until al dente tenderness is achieved; 4 to 6 hours. Check beans after 2 hours. If beans are too dry, add boiling water to pot. If beans seem too wet, remove lid and bake uncovered for 1.5 hours and then check again. Add 1tsp of salt for last 30 minutes of baking.

EXACTLY AS ADVERTISED
Heavy weight. Well glazed. No chips or cracks. Four pieces. Two crocks and two lids. Crocks wrapped in bubble pack and lid separated by cardboard. Separated by cardboard and repeated packing for the other crock and lid. All inside a box, inside a box, inside a third box. In addition I've seen a lot of comments about the little hole in the bottom of the handles getting water in them during washing. The reason for the little hole is to vent the extremely hot air during the firing process. If the hole wasn't there the hot air would expand and have no place to go causing the handle to explode. You can plug that hole now or just put your thumb over it while washing to keep the water out. I just got them and have not used them yet. I will update this review if they disappoint me. Until then consider me 100% satisfied! Update: Made French onion soup. They worked out perfectly. A good portion size (15oz). Broiler safe. I had them under High Broil about 5 minutes. I would recommend hand washing them because food (cheese) gets under the lip of the bowls and I don't think a dishwasher could get to it. Overall rating: 5 stars, very satisfied.

Fantastic Pot
I don't know what I was thinking when bought this pot..I think it was the fact that this pot is the exact same one that was given to me many, many years ago. I saw it, read the description and placed it in my basket right away. I was so excited about this find. I thought wonderful! I found a gift for my son because he just bought a new home, and like his mother (me) he loves to cook. He's starting out from scratch, doesn't have many pots outside of a few basic pots and pans. I thought this would be an ideal gift for him as he builds and personalizes his new kitchen. The only problem ( it's not really a problem) is that it's huge! My son wouldn't be using this too often and not for more than a few guys and gals he would entertain. It pains me to disclose that I have to return it. I just hope I can find this pot again but in a smaller size. If I'm unsuccessful, I may just come back and buy this again and not be too concerned about the size. It's a beautifully crafted pot. It's solid. Handles are sturdy. The lid fits and sits fine over the mouth of the pot. It was delivered on time and in perfect condition. If you're on the fence about purchasing this pot, have a large family, large amount of dinner guests, a large gathering to feed, pick up one of these pots! I'm so sad the size doesn't work for me, but I hope it works for you. I can honestly say, there's not one thing wrong with this pot. Perfecto! ???? *** Revised rating to 1 star Wanted to return because the size of the pot. It's too big. Take note before you order because you have to pay to return it. Who charges for shipping and / or returns? I'm not cheap by any means, but if you're not happy for one reason or another with a purchase, why charge a customer for a return? Ridiculous

Authentic Design Bean Pot
I've been looking for years for a large, (5 qt.), bean pot like the one I remember growing up in New England. My dad used to prepare the beans on a Friday night and bake them all night and having them for breakfast Saturday morning with ample slices of french bread. For years only 2-3 qt. pots were available. Now I finally have one that will hold 2 full bags of small Navy pea beans, along with the molasses, brown sugar, salt pork and mustard needed to make authentic Boston style Baked Beans. I've tried making beans in a crock pot crock but they just don't come out the same. It must be the round shape of an authentic bean pot that holds in the heat to a constant temperature to properly bake the beans. BTW, bake at 250 for 8-9 hrs. You can't rush real beans.

Excellent soup crocks
Neutral colour. Very well made - safe for use in dishwasher, oven and microwave. Handle remains cool. Rough ceramic bottom so won't slide on surfaces Good size for individual chili, French onion soup, and more. Extremely pleased with them.

would buy again
exactly what i expected and was looking for. these are nice deep bowls with a classic look to them. they seem to be good quality. nothing which would concern me out of the box and in my limited use. i would rate this a strong 4 stars. the only thing i would change is the varnish on the bottom. there isnt any. the lower surface is just bare clay so there can be some issues with prolonged contact with things. to be specific the bottom on the outside is bare clay. the inside is fine. if i was paying $30 for these there would be an issue. at $16 for two they are an excellent value and i am happy with the purchase.
