Universal Pen Holder Update, Update and edited. I am loving this, and the scannncut and all the accessories.
I just got my Brother scanncut Universal Pen Holder CAUniPHL1. I have read the instructions and have tried 9 different pen marker types in my crafting kit. UPDATE AGAIN. Brother has come out with a fix on the facebook scanncut USA webpage youtube. First off do not throw away the instruction information and do not throw away the packaging that the UPH comes in on the back of that is also instructions. The fix is to take a Bic pen type or a pen that is to skinny for the UPH to hold and line it up with the drawing of the size of the pen on the instruction paper. There are two specific spots that you are looking to enlarge. You then us masking tape to widen the two places with the pen. Watch the video it shows you exactly how to do this and it is really very good. The masking tape will not hurt or harm anything so it is really ok to use. This is very good news so now if you have a pen that is to skinny and after closing the little dial and the pen slips through once you take it out of the stand. You now know what to do and yes you will be able to use virtually any pen or marker in your crafting stash. This is really very good of Brother to take the time and figure this out for us consumers. I am very happy with the fix and it is good. Just make sure you wrap the masking tape around neatly you want a nice clean wrap. I think the masking tape might be something like 1/2 inch wide to 5/8th of an inch wide you do not want the really wide masking tape. Watch the videos on the Facebook scanncut usa. Plus the video of Julie using the universal pen holder they are both very helpful. UPDATE: Watch Julie Fei Fan Balzer's video on how to set this pen up. I watched the video 3 times and pick up things she did that I missed. I am making a correction here because now I can use the pens I have in my craft stash. I can use The Tulip Fabric Markers The Cra-z-Art Glitter Marker The Pilot G-2 05 I did not name it on my list. That is ok I can use it. This is just a ball point pen with black ink. The Sanford Uni-Ball Fine. I found that in my stash and gave it a try. It works great. A promotional ball point ben for a local business in my area I do not know who makes this pen no name. I at least now have five that I can use. Yes these are just random pens that I have at my house. The Other pens listed are either to fat or to skinny for the UPH. I will make corrections there and list what is to fat or to skinny. To my disappoint none of them would fit the UPH. Here is a list of what I tried. Crayola Fabric Markers too Fat Tulip Fabric Markers Fine tip works fine now that I know how to insert them. Sharpie Metallic Markers gold silver copper fine too fat. Crazart Glitter markers works fine now that I know how to insert them. Spectrum Noir I knew they would not work not cylindrical in shape. These are not shaped right and way to big. Bic Ultra round stic grip ball point pen too skinny Use the masking tape fix Regular Bic ball point pen Too skinny use the masking tape fix Creative Coloring marker pen. Too fat. I am thinking that this Universal Pen Holder will work with Competitor die cutting machine Pen/markers but not sure as I do not have any of them. I am also thinking it might work with Sakura Gelly pens again not sure as I do not have them. There are instructions as how to use the UPH. There is also information and on what size in mm that you can use from length width and tip. However when looking at all my writing instruments no indication as numerical size is listed other then the word fine. In the instructions it states you can use many pens you have available. With the masking tape fix I now think this is possible. I am giving this five stars because it is new and because it does fit in my Brother scanncut Model CM550DX.The UPH is something all us scanncut fans have been waiting for. Plus because of the price. I am glad to see the price I paid posted here and or less then what I Paid. I paid 19.99 plus tax. It would have been nice if they gave the brand or manufacture of pen/marker that can be used along with the sizes of pen/marker. I think that would have be a bit more compliant with what one might have on hand and or go buy a set of the suggested manufacturers pens/markers so one is ready to use this and takes all the guess work out it for the consumer. As time goes in maybe they will do that. I myself was looking forward to using this with my Sharpie Metallic These are the gray ones with the black cap fine point markers. these do write beautifully on card stock. There are thinner Sharpies that I would think can be used with or without the masking tape wrap. With Brother showing how to fix the skinny pen problem I do not think my UPH will be sitting in the pocket of my scanncut tote. My recommendation get the the Scanncut Universal pen holder and enjoy being able to use many different pens/ felt tip markers and use the little pens that come with or what you can purchase for the SCANNCUT machines. Always do a price comparison to make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck here on amazon or anywhere for that matter. I edited this review because of watching the video for the fix for the skinny pen problem. I think it is wonderful and I now look forwarding to really using the UNIVERSAL PEN HOLDER with my FABRIC Markers and I will be purchasing a nice set of Coloring Markers and some very nice Metallic Markers. I love my Brother Scanncut and I do boast about it where ever and when ever I can. When I believe in a product I recommend it to anyone who is interested in that particular product. With all that Said WAY TO GO BROTHER. You had a great idea and did a great job on the new scanncut2 and on the new Universal pen Holder and on all the new accessories that you have out now for the Scanncut machines. Thank you for all that you have created. Takes my crafting to a whole new level. Fawn

A very good accessory to have
It's not exactly universal, a lot of my fat and skinny pens don't fit. I put a masking tape "grippy" around the barrels of the skinny pens so that makes this okay for the skinny ones. The spring mechanism is kind of hard to use as others have noted. But I'm glad I got this and have used it a lot and mostly it works good and I'm happy that I have options for different kinds of pens. I think this is definitely worth the purchase. You can assist your draw pressure too which makes this even more versatile.

Easy and economical
This is Very easy to use. Includes a template showing where to add tape on pens that are too narrow. I love being able to use my own, higher quality pens.

Works Well!
This product works well with Stampin Up markers. It's not intuitive, and the directions are not for the faint of heart, but it is well worth the effort. It fits the Brother Scan n' Cut DX 125. It can provide fills on open letters. I recommend taking a course on YouTube or be familiar with Silhouette or other Brother Software.

Drawing on fabric with Sharpies
This pen holder is awesome. I've used the regular ScanNCut pens, but they're expensive, they don't last long enough, and they're not wash-fast. With the pen holder, I can buy a ton of ultra-fine-point Sharpies (which fit perfectly) and draw my heart out. I 'm working on a quilt featuring written-on fabrics. There were a couple empty spaces, so I filled them with crazy doodles. Fabulous. Oh, yeah, they'll draw on paper too. So you know, pens have to be: - At least 70 mm long; - between 9.6 mm and 11.4 mm in diameter; - an even thickness at 22 - 27 mm from the tip and 65 - 70 mm from the tip (both areas need not be the same size); - Brother says felt tips are best. This is one of the best ideas ever.

Not suitable for Sharpie Pens
I like that it is adjustable to take a variety on pens. The only downside was that Sharpie pens are to thick to fit it. I have tried it with a few types of pen and for those that fit it worked every time. The adjustment ring is a little bit fiddly so people with dexterity issues might struggle with it. Delivery arrived sooner that expected which was a nice bonus.

The most important tool for your ScanNCut
Forget about the foiling kit, embossing kit and the mini pens and just buy this instead! The Universal Pen Holder can accept most typical drawing pens but also embossing tools, Quickie Glue Pen, technical pencils and pens, paint pens and so much more. Perfect for getting you started with your machine right through to advanced techniques.
