Great
These stepd are great. We've a large dog. We've a Jeep. We used to give her a boost to get in the back. Now we put the steps down and she gets in on her own

Excellent Product & Customer Service
A good friend recommended the Petsafe Happy Ride Dog Hitch Step because my 11 yo German shepherd mix has been working with a canine physical therapist for significant weakness in her back legs. Although PT is helping, getting my girl in and out of my SUV has been difficult for both of us. I was excited when the hitch step arrived at my door 2 days of placing the order, but when I opened the package the bottom step did not have any slip-proof material on it, thus making it too unsafe for us to use. I called Petsafe customer service immediately and they said they would replace the step after I sent them an email w/my Amazon invoice, which I did the same day. Today (two days after speaking to customer service) I received the replacement package, and much to my surprise, I received a brand new dog hitch step with all of the parts and pieces! This product is well made, easy to assemble, very sturdy in the hitch, and worked very well to get my girl to and from her PT appointment this evening! I would highly recommend this product! I am also very grateful for the excellent support and customer service provided by Petsafe!

FANTASTIC - Pic Explained Below
AMAZING! I will explain the picture below. To start, I want to say we LOVE this! We have two 100+lb dogs and a lifted jeep wrangler plus my husband is a disabled veteran so he cannot lift our dogs into the Jeep regularly. It was too much for me to do on my own so we decided to try a variety of ramps and steps to help our dogs get into our vehicle. This is the 5th one we have tried and it is PERFECT. It was so easy to teach the dogs to use and is very easy for us. Now, if you are questioning the quality, please see the picture I have attached. We were stopped at a red light and someone rear ended us going around 35-40mph. The bottom bracket of the step bent back but that was it! No damage to our vehicle, our hitch, and no damage to the other pieces of the steps. It is constructed of high quality metal and sustained limited damage considering the hit it took! We are actually still using it with just one step for now while we wait for the insurance company to provide the funds for a new one! I would recommend this to anyone.

I like and recommend this
I have a 2004 Cadillac Escalade. I love how easy this is to use. It does get in the way of the parking sensor, but it’s worth it to me. It’s easy enough to take it off. It was a bit of a struggle to put it together; I had to get my boyfriend to figure out the top step. It didn’t come with instructions and the two major pieces of the item were sort tossed in a box, clanging and banging around. I would recommend this item especially since it’s less than half the price of the one I almost bought. That one folded away under the vehicle, and I’m not sure it would’ve even worked with my model. Wasn’t sure this would either, but it does. It’s great, and easy to use. Now just have to get the girls (Great Pyrenees & Newfoundland mix sisters to use it - one has terminal cancer and has gone mostly blind). Trying to make it easier for her to get in and out of the car.

This is how you safely load and unload a 170 pound monster with minimum effort!
Overall great product, especially when traveling with a XXXL Doggy, super easy for the dog to use and safe for both you and them! Only issue is the standard hitch height of 17 1/2 inches is too low for the maximum adjustments available with this step, it needs to be raised about 3 inches above the top adjustment point. I run a stock height Full Size SUV with the industry standard hitch height, and the steps are too low to the ground! If I install it on my First Gen. Dodge Cummins, its perfect height, but not my Sprinter Van or Full Size SUV, so,........For the small Non standard hitch height Asian/Euro SUV's this should not really be an issue!

Needed modification for smaller receiver
**Update** I have to retire my big guy from SD duties so I got a puppy. The steps are PERFECT for both because the bottom step is low enough to the ground that my old man can still use them and the puppy isn't afraid to. I can't say enough good things about these steps. I'm pretty sure I've sold a dozen of them for the company ;) The steps are great and I love the non-slip surface. My dog was hesitant to use them because there's a large gap between the top plate and my bumper (9"+) due to the adaptor I had to use (my receiver is only 1"). He fell between the step and my bumper, so I had to have a welder friend make a top step for me. The company doesn't offer anything in that aspect. We took the cap off the top of the square tube the steps are attached to, and I had her weld a pipe onto a plate. She slid the pipe down into the tube and ran a bolt through it to keep it in place, but also making it removable in case the next vehicle I get has the standard 2" receiver and the adaptor would no longer be needed. She also welded a square leg onto the bottom of the plate so that pressure/weight on it is supported. The plate stays where it is and is out of the way of the steps no matter what position they're in, and it doesn't hit my bumper. My dog, a 110lb Great Pyrenees, is now confident and goes up and down the steps without issue. It saves his joints and my back! I get asked about them all the time by strangers and I always recommend them but with the note that you may need to have a top step made if you use a receiver adapter.

Great for my dogs
both of my dogs love this. i had a bit of trouble training my older dog to use it but he does fine after some coaxing. my younger dog took to it right away. I love how easy it is to fold up and the hatch of my suv will open/close with or without the steps folded up.

Great design but needs some small improvements to be perfect
Pros: First let me say that I looked at alot of different options to help our 120lb girl get in and out of the car easily. Ramps weren't a great option for us because as soon as you open the back she gets super excited and wants to jump out immediately. I looked at sturdy folding pet stairs and we'd run into the same problem (she won't give you time to get it set up once the hatch opens and then how do I hold on to her leash while I'm trying to put all the stuff away in the car). Given the situation, storage outside the vehicle is ideal since she also takes up a large part of the rear cargo area. So this PupStep was really looking like a clear winner for our situation from a design standpoint.........it is, just with a few caveats. Cons: It's very easy to assemble and well thought out so no issues there. One main problem I ran into is that the steps are not as solid as I'd like. They fit quite loosely into their slots and so they can feel unstable to a dog. Now you could use shims on the sides of the tubes to take out the slack but you're supposed to slide the second step down while driving to allow visibility of your license plate. You could also use some sort of lever or cam clamp to take out the slack. The simple fix to me would be that instead of (or in addition to) pull pins they would also use heavy duty thumb screws so you could remove all the slack from the fit between the tubes. The biggest issue by far to me is that the second step is too low and far away from the edge of the car bumper if you have a low hitch (like most current wagons and small SUVs). If you look at the photos all the hitches the manufacturer shows they typically come right out the center of the bumper but on most modern vehicles the hitch mounts under the bumper (because nobody wants to cut their nice paint matched bumper for a tow hitch). This means that the first step is closer to the ground and the distance between the second step and the cargo area is much larger than you'd like (the dog will tend to have their hind legs drop in betwen the step and the bumper because it expects a stair to be there). I saw one review where someone fabricated a custom 3rd step to the top of the main post and to me this is likely how I will fix mine as well in the short term. Ideally the manufacturer really should provide something like this in their assembly (or at least allow folks to buy it as an option). I'd suggest they add a removable 3rd step that slides into the main tube and attaches with a similar red pull pin. A removable top cap should be standard so it still looks good even if you don't need the 3rd stair. This problem clearly affects most of the new cars on the market today so the manufacturer really needs to address this in their design IMHO. If they fixed those 2 issues it would be a 5 star item for me.

Great addition
The steps are plastic so not super sturdy. That said it is rated to 200lbs and holds more than that. Its a touch heavier than expected but not bad at all. This is exactly what i needed to get my large dog into my truck bed without stressing his joints. You will need a 12" hitch extension to use for trucks however when the tailgate is down and for lifted trucks possibly a drop hitch. My wife and I also use it as steps for camping in the back of the truck under our topper. Will add more after we've used it a few more times.

My dog can be pretty stubborn at times and it only took him a ...
This is exactly the genius invention that I have needed! My 100 pound dog is aging and will no longer attempt to jump in the SUV. I needed a way to get him to the vet and groomers without having to lift him myself and he was scared of the ramp. These steps are just what I needed. I'm 8.5 months pregnant, limping from a knee injury and I was still able to put the steps on myself, load up the dog, fold up the steps and get him to the vet myself. No problems, no hassle. Putting the steps together at first requires a bit of jimmying to get them to the height you want and figure out how the pins work, but once that is done they are simple to stow up, remove just the steps, or take the system off altogether. My dog can be pretty stubborn at times and it only took him a few minutes of training to get comfortable using them. I found watching the video another reviewer posted helpful. If you are looking for a way to get small or aging dogs in a vehicle, or to just to ease the strain on your dog's joints, don't hesitate to purchase these. You won't regret it.

Only need top step
It was easy to assemble, easy to use, no complaint there. The main vertical tubing is designed kinda stupid though. There is 4in of unused tubing on top but pin stops on the side are welded so low that bottom step is practically on the ground. All I need is top step in reality. Beside there is a 4in of tubing sticking out on the top, which dog can easily hit with his belly. Not sure I like it. Idea is great but I may take it to the welding shop to move side notches higher. With additional cost of welding, product may not be worth the money

Where has this been all my life?!
So happy with this product. I have three big dogs and our old girl can't jump into the back of our SUV any more. This attachment was very easy to put together and to attach to our vehicle. The steps you can take out, which is handy when you're not using them. She picked up on using the stairs quickly and it's much easier than using a ramp (which we've also bought but it's so heavy and bulky to take in and out of the vehicle).
