Works like it should.
The filter works good and is quite. No complaints. It feels sturdy and well built. Easy to assemble and use.

Not great , but not bad, decent
The media could not be loaded. I purchased the 35 gallon Cascade for my 20 gallon thinking it would be more than enough but I was wrong it looks “bigger” on the photo but it’s really small compared to my other filter Over all the suction isn’t the best 5-10 for suction you can barely feel it Overall water filtration is 8-10 does collect all debris and left over waste Would recommend putting seachem matrix in it for better results it also came broken from the leveling device My best advice to look around before buying this product or go bigger than 35 gallon for max results

Penn Plax Cascade Hang-on Aquarium Filter Review
The story of my review may be like a few others . I ordered the first Penn Plax Cascade Aquarium and it arrived on time and by appearance not damaged. Putting it together was easy. I put it in my 20gal fish tank. I plugged it in and the motor and impeller started up and it started to work just fine. I then checked on it about an hour later and the motor was humming and the impeller had stopped. I took it out and checked the directions and all was correct. I put in back into the tank and it ran for about a minute and then the impeller stopped working. I tried to hand turn the impeller by hand but it would not work. While the unit worked initially it seemed to be doing a good job and the motor was very quiet. So I put in a return request. I received a response within a few hours. I returned the unit and within 3 days my replacement came. I put it together and plugged it in and tested it in my sink. It worked just fine. I then put it into the tank. Again it worked fine. I checked on it in an hour and it was working perfectly. I have now had it 2 weeks and I love it. No problems, motor quit and it does a good job to keep the water clean. I like the option of being able to adjust the water flow. I would highly recommend this product. My only advice is that after you put it together test it first before putting it into your fish tank. I was impressed with Amazon's return policy. I have been buying from Amazon for more then 6 years and purchased almost 80 items, this was only the 2nd time I had to return an item. I gave it 5 stars because not matter what the item is or where you purchased it you will get lemon from time to time. In the end the new returned item worked great.

Great filter
The adjustable flow is nice but the range of adjustment is pretty small. The Tidal by Seachem can be adjusted all the way down to a drip (probably not great for the motor), but this filter doesn't let you adjust the flow very much. Other than that, it's a great filter. Very very quiet. I picked up the 35 gallon version and have it on a 20 gallon on my desk. I can't hear the filter at all, aside from the water movement itself. This filter is not self priming (meaning you have to fill it with water when setting it up or after you clean it) but it's not a problem at all, just scoop up a little tank water and fill up the filter, then plug it in. The Tidals are self priming which is nice, but they also require the tank level to be quite full since they skim the surface, which means I have to shut them off before doing a water change. The Cascade I can do my water changes and leave the filter running through almost the whole change, but it does not skim the surface. Could be a con for some, but is a pro for me since I have a lot of floating plants that clog up the Tidal constantly. Not really a point against the Tidal though since that's the intended design, and it works great if you don't have a lot of small floating plants. This filter works great for Betta tanks. I wrap some coarse sponge around the inflow to prevent anything from getting sucked against the grate. The grille on the outflow is great. At higher flows it evenly distributes the flow and softens it slightly, on lower flows it turns the outflow into split streams, which won't annoy or stress Betta :).

Stopped working 2 years to the day after purchase
This filter worked well for 2 years. It had to be cleaned more often than my bigger cascade 300's but was a simple process. Simply remove the uptake tube, clean both the impeller and the tube. Put it back in place, make sure it was seated well and it worked well again. I had to do this every couple of weeks to keep it working as well as it should. I ran this filter on a 5.5 gallon tank. I would never recommend it for a tank any bigger than a tank this size. It just wouldn't work efficiently on a tank any bigger even though it is recommended for a tank up to 35 gallons. My oldest Cascade 300 has been in service for about 20 years and is still working perfectly. Needless to say, I was disappointed when this one quit working after just 2 years. I can't in good conscious recommend any of the smaller Cascades. So far I am satisfied with the 300's. I am running 3 of them right now. As I said, the oldest one is at least 20 years old. The other 2 have been in service several years. Should they start causing problems soon they will be replaced with a different brand. Unfortunately things are just not made as well as they once were so I don't expect the newer ones to hold up as well as my original one. I do expect to get longer than 2 years service from products I purchase though. I have contacted customer service and am waiting on a reply from them. Should I not hear from them in a reasonable amount of time I will be inclined to no longer recommend even the 300's to folks and will certainly not be buying anymore in the future.

Buyer beware
Not easy to get replacement if pump is faulty.

Nice quality
Even though more expensive than other filters its size, it’s dependable and works well. I’ve used Cascade for many many years, and I always go back for quality products ❤️

Very quiet - DIDN'T LAST
EDIT - Almost one year later to the day and I have just had to purchase a new filter to replace this. As mentioned in my original review, this filter tends to stop on it's own more often than I'm used to after years of AquaClear use, and after discovering it stopped two days ago I haven't been able to keep it going. Turned back on for a day, then shut off again. Just tried cleaning/fixing now, and it turned on when plugged in but stopped again before it was even primed and running. As my first experience with this filter, I won't be buying again. I have purchased two of these Cascade HOB filters now in two different sizes. I am very much a die-hard AquaClear fan and have been for about 20 years, but the AC's have a very short overflow lip (where the water flows out of the filter into the tank). I have a fish tank in my living room and the AC overflow only reached the surface of the tank water if the tank was full absolutely all the way to the top - after a day or two of evaporation, the overflow on the filter was higher than the surface causing a waterfall that created more noise than I was willing to deal with in my living room. I went on the hunt for a filter that was equally as quiet but had a longer overflow lip, and after doing a lot of review reading, I took a chance on a Cascade. The filter is VERY quiet, so that alone makes me happy. The overflow lip is longer than an AquaClear, so it can go longer without being noisy and annoying before I have to top up the tank. So it met both my criteria. I dislike the media that the Cascade comes with itself, and the way it's set up, but thankfully it has a nice sized media box much like an AquaClear, so I just customized it and set it up like I would on an AC and it works perfectly. It does a great job of keeping the tank nice and clear. My only complaint is that in the few months I've been using the filters, I find that they clog and stop running pretty easily. There have been about 4 occasions in the last 6 months that I've discovered the filter not running - when I take it apart and clean out the motor and impeller, it starts back up again. Bit annoying after years of using ACs that basically run forever without clog issues. Overall, a great filter for the price, met the requirements I was looking for, and am happy with it.

It worked well ... at first.
I have many brands of aquarium filters (I have 13 tanks). This one worked well to start (all 3 that I purchased) but after a couple of months the filter flow became quite slow regardless of the speed it is set to - lucky to get a trickle. Separate it out, clean them fully, restart and it was ok for a few days prior to seeing the deficiency in how it works.

Trash product, no support
UPDATE: absolutely no support. Find another product Worked wonders for a week was super quiet and then the pump got loud and water draw was cut by 3/4. Week two it died! No support at all! I would spend a little more to get a better value product

Burned out after less than 2 years
You get what you pay for motor got hot and burned out in 20 months. I am putting an old pump filter on that is more than 25 years old and never had a problem my old filter filters better and has lasted longer

Awful. Never again.
Easily the worst filter I've ever owned and I've owned quite a few. Constantly looses its prime and stops working. Thankfully I have a 20 year old Eheim filter running on the same tank or my fish may have already died. Also, it doesn't sit properly on a standard, rimmed tank. And the return is quite loud compared to any of my other filters.
