Pluses! and Minuses?
Bought this to use as mulch in my vegetable garden. Conveniently shipped to my front porch by Amazon! I liked that the straw was already chopped. It was easy to take out handfuls and mulch around my celery and my garlic. Big Plus! When I first opened the bag there were strands of small, 1/2", plastic mesh mixed in with the first handfuls of straw. Strange. Minus! Bale is packed tightly, so there is a lot for the price. I have a large garden and have plenty left for later this year and next year. Another plus! I thought this product was all straw. Turns out it contains seeds! It looks like wheat straw, maybe, and the seed heads are included in the mix. Mulches nicely AND produces a nice new crop of wheat/weeds. The new shoots are easy to pull out through the mulch (wheat kernel still attached), but in this context they are weeds. Plus and Minus. I will continue to use but look for JUST chopped straw the next time.

Not completely weed-free, but EXCELLENT, in any case
Compared to going to local farms to pick up straw or hay, this is incredibly expensive....about 4-5x as much. But anyone who has picked up straw in their own cars knows how dirty the process can be. This straw is clean and nicely shredded. Compared to other straw options, it has very little weeds, but you will need to pull put anywhere between 1-5 per day--just grab as close to the soil as you can and it's easy to pull. I think it's grass weeds, but mot entirely sure. In theory, if you mulched with 4-6 INCHES of straw, you shouldn't be seeing weeds, but I use about 1-3" and weeds will pop up at that height. The bag is large but there's actually a lot more in there than you'd think, all compressed. I've covered at least half my backyard beds in about 2" this year and needed two bags of this. The convenience of having it delivered to your door is worth the cost. Keep in mind this is not TWO-DAY prime but it is free shipping. It usually takes about a week to get to me in CA. At about $25 Prime, I would stock up. At $30+, having it delivered is what makes it great. The best part of straw is that you can easily move it aside to plant next year, or till it into the soil this winter to plant next spring. Unlike bark, it is very easy to work with. It does provide some cool shelter for snails but I use baits to keep snails and slugs out of my garden. Just sprinkle on top of the straw and water it in, depending your bait. It really helps with erosion and definitely evaporation, and keeps your soil moist, which then helps with conditioning your soil and helping your amendments come to life to make your soil healthy. Give it a shot!

Buy ONLY if you want to grow a field of straw!
As others have noted, this mulch is FULL of seed. I'd bought it in the past, I believe, with no problem, but this year it sprouted grassy stems everywhere. I only just opened this bag last week (I still had some open for earlier use even though I purchased this earlier in the spring to be ready) otherwise I would return it. I'm still planning to hunt down the company for a direct complaint as I paid for something that should suppress weeds and now they are growing everywhere BECAUSE of this product...and they aren't easy to pull up and it takes a lot of time to try to get them. It only gets 2 stars because I am pretty certain I used this brand before and it was OK, and because it does look decent and retain moisture. Beyond that I am very disappointed and will never buy again. Now what the heck do I do with the rest of the bag?!?

this stuff is fantastic...immediate positive response from plants
Based upon the reviews that were posted, I ordered this straw mulch and have been more than pleased. I live in the high sierras in california where the summers can get to 103-105 and container plants die. We are already having warm weather and are facing drought bigtime. I want to conserve water and this mulch is going to be a big help. I put it around all my rose plants as they have such a hard time in the heat; they have perked up so much with the mulch barrier(i made it pretty thick) and i am confident they will handle summer much better plus i haven't had to water as much. I just planted all my summer tomatoes (8) in containers and am mulching them; i mulched my front yard flower containers and they look so much healthier. I think this product is going to be such a help with the high temps and low water california is anticipating; i just ordered another package of it! I have been pretty generous to my plants in covering with the mulch but it will pay off i am sure. will do a followup when the 100;s hit and stay for awhile.

Mine sprouted
Plenty of straw to cover my 300 sq ft garden, but I haven't planted any seeds yet, and after a week of heavy rain it looks like a lawn has been planted. I know it's the straw causing all of the growth because I had the garden soil delivered last spring but was unable to start my garden. I've had a few weeds pop up, but nothing like this. I'm going to rake the growth up and try again.

If you are looking for mulch, do not waste your money on this!!
I noticed about a week after I spread it throughout my veggie garden, that alot of grass started to sprout in my garden and there were a lot of birds that started to come to the garden. I looked at the straw in the garden further, and there are a bunch of seeds mixed in this straw that were sprouting and that the birds were trying to eat. It would have been a great mulch for my garden minus all of these seeds. I am going to remove what I can and just go back to my regular mulch. This was a disappointing product.

Lot of straw for the money
I spread this under my veggie plants (especially cukes that tend to want to grow on the ground), sprinkled cinnamon on top and ants stay away. I admit I have to sprinkle more cinnamon after it rains, but this straw stays in place, so none of the veggies are resting on the soil. I put some under the strawberry patch, but the weeds are winning anyway.

straw mulch
Very convenient if you're not near a farm. I use it for my strawberry bed. The straw help with water retention (I live in southern California) and keeps the strawberries off the dirt which helps with insect damage. I gave it four stars because I feel it's a bit expensive. Update 05/28/2013: I have not had even one strawberry damaged by insects.
