Well-made brackets actually qualify as heavy-duty
*Update 12/31/2015* - the price of these brackets has now been raised to almost double what they have been for some time. It is now quite questionable as to the value of these for the money. At $6.65 they were a great value but at double that amount, not really. If you can wait, don't pay this price. Heavy duty is a widely mis-used term, but these shelf brackets appear to qualify. I'm using 4 of them to support an 8' shelf made from a pair of 2X8s (so the shelf depth is 15"). They are very heavy gauge steel - 5/32" for the brace and 1/8" for the bracket itself. These brackets are designed to be mounted with the 8" side bolted to wall studs using three 5/16" thread lag screws, according to the manufacturer's sticker on the bracket itself. If you're attaching directly to studs, the manufacturer recommends 1 1/2" length, but if you're going through wallboard then you should probably use 2" or 2 1/2" lag screws. The 12" side has three 1/4" holes (two of them slightly offset from center), intended for attaching your shelf board(s). In my shipment, the brackets were just placed loose in a box, resulting in some minor chipping of the white powder coating. Overall, highly recommended, assuming you have some serious weight to hold. For 'regular' garage or workshop shelving where your shelf board is less than 1" thick, these are likely expensive overkill. Manufactured in China. Quality overall seems reasonably good; however, every bracket has a slight bit of waviness to it, and the length of the brace is such that the shelf will tip back a very tiny bit towards the wall.

Great shelf supports for a very reasonable price
I purchased these to support shelves in my ranch barn to hold lumber and PVC piping. For the lumber I added 2 foot wide 1/2" plywood to the shelf supports, which worked great...very sturdy. The vertical arms of the brackets were fastened to studs 32" apart with 5/16" lag screws while the plywood was attached with 1/4-20 carriage bolts. The latter required redrilling the horizontal supports with 1/4" holes, which took just a minute The existing 3/16" holes are compatible with 3/16" hardware, which is difficult to find; it takes just a few seconds to redrill the holes for the much more available 1/4" hardware. The finished shelves were very sturdy...the supports are highly recommended.

Great for heavy duty
I had to build a second shelf in walk in closet so I ordered three brackets. Great for heavy duty, I ordered 3 but I honestly only needed 2. Only flaw is that screw whole are two different sizes. I had to go back to hardware store to purchase a different set of screws.

Excellent heavy duty shelf bracket
These are very sturdy shelf brackets - they've prevented my shelves from collapsing under admittedly overloaded conditions. The only problem is that it's difficult to drill in the screws to the wall - if the holes were offset, the cross brace wouldn't interfere as much. That's the sole reason for deducting one star

HEAVY DUTY SHELF BRACKET - WORKS
I needed strong brackets to hold up the extra flooring boards we have onto a shelf I made. These are just what you would need when you don't want the cheap brackets from Home Depot. These can be used to hold either 10-12" shelves or 16-18" shelves depending on how you mount them. I would recommend you mount them with the HeadLOK Heavy-Duty Flathead Fasteners like I did. They are available on Amazon. You could also use lag bolts but I would not use regular screws into the wall if you want a heavy duty shelf.

Crappy packaging led to chipped paint all over.
Got my brackets today and the paint is chipped off of them all over the place. Now I have to waste time painting them before I can use them. The brackets were just set in a box with some air bubble packing things on top of them. There was nothing to prevent them from banging into each other during the entire shipment which is exactly what happened. The brackets seem very strong but they should be packaged better. Other thing to note is that the holes in the brackets are different sizes on the short side vs the long side. No idea what the point of that is but I'll probably have to drill out the smaller holes to fit with the bolts I need to mount them with.

Expensive, but worth it.
Moved into a new house and needing heavy weight 2' deep shelving in the basement. I used 1/2" BC plywood for shelves with these brackets on 4' centers. Very solid.

A 5 star or 1 star?
Torn about rating. In terms of sturdiness I'd give these a 5. Using the proper hardware these should be able to support heavy loads. However, the condition they arrived in is unacceptable. One had a couple of small chips and scratches where the paint was off but I could live with, but the other two have so many chips and large sections of paint missing as to be candidates for rust in any but the driest conditions. If I kept them I'd have to spray prime and paint them - probably just faster to go to HD and buy them there (bought a couple there that are identical and only a few cents more).
