Amazing grinder
I wanted to get into knife making but didn't want to shell out a ton of money on tools that I may not use. I did a ton of research and came across this grinder. Worth every dollar, it is a solid machine and it doesn't bog down under load. The belt can be laid horizontal as well. One thing I did have to do, any belt less than 80 grit will touch the bottom guard. I purchased a ceramic belt set through Amazon, I walked the belts down, 80, 60, 40, 36. Letting the grinder run for a few min, which "sanded" the inner guard and eventually allowed for the belt to spin freely. That is the only fault. Great sander.

Very Impressive - Makes Mower Blade Sharpening A Breeze
I bought this a while ago to sharpen the 3 blades on my riding mower. I delayed using it because I was not looking forward to setting it up, but it was actually quite easy. Once set up, it probably took me 30 minutes or so to sharpen all three blades which is a significant time saving for me. Not only did this cut down the time it took to sharpen, it was WAY easier since I was able to angle the platform to match the blade angle. I also usually have a hard time straightening the ends of the blades where it tends to round off, but that was also a breeze with this. I bought a spare pack of sanding belts, expecting that the one it came with would wear out quickly, but it still seems barely used which I also find impressive. I haven't tried the round disk on the side yet, but I have no reason to believe it won't hold up just as well. This does have holes on the side to mount to a bench, but I decided not to secure it just yet since it had rubber feet already attached. While not the heaviest machine around, it certainly has a decent amount of "heaft", enough so that it didn't move around while I was using it. I can't recommend this highly enough for the price!

Good but could be better
This is the first 2x42 grinder I've owned but here are some of the thoughts I've got on it. 1. The platen: Mine is not 100% flat. I was finishing some small items that are 1.5" diameter, the middle of the item was not getting ground down because the platen was slightly concave. I bought a steel platen plate and epoxied it to the surface of the existing one and this solved the issue. Part plus shipping was about $20. To me this is the biggest issue this machine has and is a bit ridiculous if you ask me. The whole point is for that surface to be flat and the manufacturer got this wrong. 2. The speed: I wish this had a variable speed option. it doesn't, so what you get is what you get. 3. The power: this motor can be bogged down pretty easily. Again, I'm grinding some 1.5" diameter titanium and I can slow the belt pretty easily if I apply enough pressure to my piece. 4: Design: I wish the design was better to allow for quicker belt changes. I'm going from 180 to 400 grits and then I had intended to use finishing belts. The changing of belts is a pain because you have to remove the platform and the "safety" cover too. I permanently removed the safety cover and I can swap a little faster, still not fast enough. My other gripe with the design is where the case goes around the bottom wheel. There isn't enough space between the bottom wheel and the case to fit a finishing belt. There's probably about a 2-3mm clearance there and those finishing belts are a lot thicker and do not fit. Hopefully these thoughts help you in your purchase decision.

Cool little machine after some editing
After a year of using whetstones for all of my bladesmithing needs, I finally decided to buy an electric belt grinder. I didn't want to fork over an arm and a leg, but I was willing to give out a few bones for a test run of a belt grinder. I gotta say, I'm pretty happy with my purchase. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of some of the cutting and fixing I had to do on it. Once you fix the little problems, though. It's a great little grinder. First, I had to cut all of the metal away from the drive wheel so that it could freely spin without rubbing against the back plate. (It was rubbing so bad that it was stalling the motor) secondly, I had to cut off a portion of the table so that I could make it easy to change belts. After just a week, my tensioner started slipping, so i also had to remove the face of it and re-tension the tension spring, which was probably the most difficult part to figure out on my own. But once all that was done, the tensioner stays tight, and this little bad boy fits belts from 36-1k grit and beyond. It's a great little addition to the shop after the initial frustration, and if you're willing to give it the love it needs, it will love you back for years to come.

If you're a knife maker. Buy a ceramic glass platten for smooth bevels.
The belt sander is pretty good for knife making but it needs some modifications to be better. Pros: 1) It's powerful enough to put some pressure without slowing the belt. 2) the belt arm tips back so that you can use the bottom wheel for concave bevels. 3) it's price Cons: 1) the Platten is not flat which really effects flat beveling. I'm planning on JB Welding a ceramic glass platten on top to achieve smoother bevels. 2) if you are using the work table on the belt side, you have to remove it to change your belts every time. You also have to level your table again because there aren't any detents that tell you where 90 degrees is. 3) if you want to use belts with a grit lower than 80 (60, 36 etc.) Then you have to cut the bottom piece of the lower wheel sheild off. I tried to use a 60 grit belt and it didn't even move. 4) the bolts that hold the disc sander table in place are plastic and have a hard time holding the table in place when you apply pressure. Overall it's not a bad grinder. I got a white/blue version instead of the all black version shown in the photo but that isn't a problem to me. I would suggest this to new knife makers but the ceramic glass platten is a must.

very useful
it's easy to change belts and move the paten. You can expose the bottom wheel when the cover is off. the top wheel is still covered.

Works better than I expected
I have had this a year or so now and still runs great. I was concerned as it was on the cheap end but that is price. The quality is good

Works great. Love it.
I was hesitant about buying a "large" power tool online but I am very happy with it. It arrived quickly, it was well packaged, and there was no damage. The set-up was quick and it worked perfectly. Like many people, on the first day, I took my angle grinder to the tool rest and cut it so that I didn't need to keep moving it to change grinder belts. I use it for hobby knife-making and change belts often. Aside from that one issue, no problems. I love it and would buy it again in a heart-beat.

Well made and a little simplistic
Just got this so this is a first impression review. Very solidly built and powerful. I am pretty sure I will keep it. The challenge is adjustments on this. Just not well thought out. A couple of examples: - To tun the belt from vertical to horizontal the bolt for the is aimed down to the bench. - The working tables are both very adjustable and the is no hard stop to set it to 90 degrees or a click to indicate you are at a given angle. The Disc sander table has butterfly nuts that are helpful but the table for the belt sander is an Allen screw. Seems like a good machine that would be a big improvement in value with a little more design work. So far still recommend buying it given the price.

A good buy
Use it for grinding knifes. Works fine with some modifications. Up to u it want to make them as they require irreversible changes to original product. Personally biggest thing is the platform must be removed to change belts. Not practical. I did not want to cut part to avoid this but might do it. But very happy with my purchase. Good motor etc. Fantastic for any small projects.

An excellent sander.
This is a sturdy professional quality sander. I took a star away because dust collection really doesn't exist on it. A sander produces a lot of dust, right?

Good enough to get me started.
I like this belt grinder, a big step up from the handyman special I put together for grinding knives. I did modify the guarding to allow contour grinds and also added a variable speed control. This machine will suit my needs for quite some time.
