Sturdy
Our son would climb on this and throw his body weight back and forth trying to open the gate. It always stays in place. You will want to buy longer screws to install the gate and ensure you find the studs. No drywall would hold up to the punishment we have seen this gate go through and it still works great.

.
Difficult install, but once it’s in it won’t budge. I slammed against in with my hip to see if it could handle my crazy toddler, and it stayed sturdy. No falling down the stairs for us. You need two hands to open it, which makes it difficult for a disabled family member but not every product can account for that.

Minimalist design
Update #2 it's been a year and a half now and this gate has held up to the test of time and a few angry slams :') I would recommend this gate and would buy again. Update . Amazon sent me a new gate I've had it up about a week now. Pros Minimalist design for people who don't want something bulky The gate is full size so you don't feel like you're squeezing through a small door. Huge advantage when carrying groceries and etc. The gate stays open on its own so if we don't need it, it's not in the way. (this is specific to how we mounted ours, though, see pics) The latch is easy enough. I like that it takes a little extra effort because that just makes it harder for a toddler to figure out. Cons There are definitely some design flaws like it doesn't account for use on a wall with trim and the wall mounts are kinda big. We have a gap on the bottom because of this. As per another review, I can see it being dangerous for a child if left open unsupervised. Purchased this gate "new" and was sent an opened box product, put together with Scotch tape. Munchkin says it's not their problem and need to contact Amazon. I have nothing to say of the product just that if you're thinking of buying, maybe buy directly from munchkin to avoid what I'm going through now.

Hard at first, easy after...
This was more of a project to install but was worth the time and effort. My 20-month old for the last 5 months has been traversing the stairs with the help of mom and dad to learn. We are always hand-at-back ready to catch him. Every time without fail he gets to the top of the stairs, stands up, walks around to grab this gate, and closes it himself. He can't reopen it yet, but the little man is mechanically inclined and already figured out our exterior door locks and handles, but it's tough enough to do that I'm hoping he'll be solid on the stairs before he figures it out. In other words, so easy to close that even a toddler can do it, but not easy enough to open even for a toddler that knows how to use a screwdriver. Looks good, works well, and the little guy a few months ago had a habit of shaking the thing with full force and that's a decent amount of force. I'd buy again, and actually will probably buy another for the base of the stairs later this year to replace a different style I have at the base.

Nice looking and sturdy gate, but SO hard to install!!!
This is a very nice, solid gate. I docked a star simply because of how difficult it was to install. The first issue we had was that all the screws were too short to reach the stud. The second issue was that our stairwell is 43.5” wide; so the widest setting was about 1/4” too wide with the screws all the way screwed in. The second widest was about a 1/4” too narrow with the screws all the way out. The way you have to assemble the gate does not account for unusual widths like our stairwell. We ended up having to use the widest setting and purchase an angle grinder (another $50 spent) to shear off the ends of the screws to make it work. With all that struggle, it took all afternoon to install. (Not how I wanted to spend my last day of winter vacation lol.)

Great Customer Service Experience
Received this gate secondhand, but with some missing pieces. I couldn't find the parts I needed for sale anywhere, so I contacted Munchkin's customer service looking for some guidance. They sent me the parts I needed to install the gate, no extra charge, saving me from having to buy a whole new gate. Only issue is installation can be tricky - the latching brackets have to be lined up perfectly. but once installed the gate is secure and solid. The whole gate swings open, so there is nothing to trip over (easy to do while carrying a small child). Another nice feature - if you have a base board or moulding along the wall where you want to install the gate, you may be able to install the hinges/brackets in such a way where it still opens and closes, even if the wall is not fully flush.

Works well with different anchors
We have two of these for the stairs and have been using them 4 months. We have a preschooler and a toddler, but they are not very rough with the gates. Top of stairs gate is great. Bottom of stairs gate has issues, possibly because the gate is extended wider (but still within range) for the bottom? Cons: -Screws and anchors provided for the load bearing hinge are not sufficient in drywall. We did not have studs where needed, so we used provided hardware and it came loose quickly just from opening and closing. Had to replace with heavy duty drywall anchors and long screws for the top hinge of each gate. -The plastic fitting on the top bar near the load bearing hinge came loose and now the gate sags and is not aligned (see pics) - I have to lift and push to close instead of just pushing to close. This happened before and we pushed it back in, but now it is loose again. I am awaiting response from manufacturer. -Very difficult to install at top and bottom of stairs Pros: -I taught my responsible preschooler how to use the gate so she can use the stairs freely, and the “push to close” feature is fantastic for her (and us) in making sure gate always gets closed to protect the toddler. -Toddler cannot open it -Not too difficult for adult to open with one hand once you have practice -Gate does not have a threshold to step over and only swings opens one direction (you choose the direction when installing) - both features are important for stairs

Easy to use one-handed, sturdy.
People are so quick to rate a product poorly when they have to put a little elbow grease into getting it to function properly. Yes, installation was tricky but if you’re handy and patient good on ya- a few F bombs and you’ll be fine. Use your own screws/drywall anchors read the directions, and add some brainpower to figure it out. Once the gate is in (properly) it’s stylish, works well with one hand and is very sturdy. My baby shakes it at the top of the stairs and it doesn’t budge. The only thing I wish was different was that it auto closed. I’m always checking to make sure it is in fact latched. Anyway we bought a second one... a few more curse words and extra holes in the wall, I’m sure we’ll all live.

Solid baby gate!
Great baby gate. Latches properly. Installs easily. I didn't want to drill into my post so decided to take a piece of wood and zip tie to the post. Opens the same on both sides. Really happy with the Munchkin!

Great product until it broke after 16 months.
Gate hinge broke 16 months after purchase. Very disappointing. It could have been very d’ange for my daughter. Luckily nothing happened as it broke when we opened it and she wasn’t near the gate. Not sure the warranty covers this but I feel I should be reimbursed. It is a safety concern.

Older version was better/safer :(
I would have given these gates five stars, as I previously bought one and it was awesome! HOWEVER, the two new ones I ordered come with different mounting brackets on the non-hinge side that needlessly add moving parts and risk of failure. (They also make it quite a bit more finicky to open and close compared to the older, simpler ones) I would gladly accept the older brackets if the manufacturer is willing to provide them, as they don't use a silly spring-loaded release that is sure to fail :( Also, I'd add that the quality of the screws provided for mounting is rather lacking, they will strip very easily, and I actually snapped two clean off when mounting to a solid wood surface (bannister). With the old brackets and better quality screws I'd give 5 stars happily.

Poorly designed, built even worse
The only reason I bought this gate is because it is wider than many gates, which I needed in order to span a hallway. The other good thing is that it locks itself, so you can just swing it shut and it's done. Unfortunately I rather dislike this gate because: 1) Most of its critical attachments are made of cheap plastic. This includes the hinges and the locking mechanisms. Not sure how long they will last, but I know that when they fail it's not going to be pretty. The main section is steel, but I wonder why they wouldn't just make the whole thing plastic, they might as well. 2) the design is geometrically flawed. The opening motion involves lifting the gate UP at the far end, which rotates it slightly, requiring a lot of free play at the locking points. This means that when closed, the gate is barely locked - secured only 1-2mm deep behind the latches, otherwise the entire gate seizes up and cannot open. In other words, the gate is locked either just barely, or permanently. To be honest, how this contraption made it from design to production and onto the market is beyond me.
