Nice vise.
I puchased this vise at an incredible price. It wasn't even a Lightning Deal or anything like that; just one day the price was drastically reduced for no apparent reason and was, literally, too good to refuse. Unfortunately, once it arrived I had buyer's remorse. For some reason (i.e. my own stupidity), I was under the impression that this was a multi-angle vise similar to the Stanley MaxSteel multi-angle vise . It's not. Keep that in mind when making your purchase. That said, this vise seems to be of decent quality. It's definitely a light-duty vise, being only 3" wide and a clamp-on to boot, but it is heavy for its size and built quite sturdily. The jaws open/close smoothly, so no binding in the main screw. Heck, it even has an anvil and pipe jaws incorporated into the design... on a 3" clamp-on vise! I remember way back in the old days when I lived in an apartment, and there were times I could have used a simple vise like this. If you're married you probably won't get away with this, but for single guys in apartments you could easily clamp this onto your dining room table. Or if you have a WorkMate in the closet, that'll work too. Heck, you could take it to the local park and clamp it onto a picnic bench if you wanted. The point is, the vise is portable, so you're limited only by your imagination for where you could use it. I don't know how much use I'm going to get out of this, considering I already have a heavy-duty 6" vise mounted on my workbench, but for the price I paid it's just not worth the time/effort to return. I'll probably use it as a second support point for those ultra-rare occassions when I'm working on an overly long workpiece; i.e. use the heavy-duty vise for the main grip, but use the smaller clamp-on vise to stabilize the longer workpiece... so long as the workpiece doesn't have to remain level of course, given the size difference between the two vises. Regardless, if you need a light-duty portable vise, this Irwin vise is a great option.

Very Handy Little Vise
I use to have a small clamp-on vise, that I picked up from Restoration about 15 years ago, which broke recently. I over loaded the vise and the cast iron vise head cracked. I've been looking to replace that vise for a while, when I saw the Irwin 3" Clamp-On Vise at The Home Depot. This clamp-on vise is bigger and more robust than the one I broke. I'm not a mechanic or carpenter, just a home owner who repairs stuff and tinkers all the time. I have this vise mounted on my old drafting table, which is now my work bench. I highly recommend this vise for small-medium stuff. Very good as a sturdy third hand for clamping, soldering, sanding, filing, drilling, polishing, painting, gluing. I wouldn't use it for bending metal stock. I have used this vise to hold a bicycle pedal and freed a frozen bolt, soaked in penetrating fluid, but I don't think that I'd stress this vise more than that. The jaws, on the vise that I received, do not close flush. The left side has a hair gap, when the right side touches. It's a minor issue, solved with a little flat file work. There is no 'stop' pin at the end of the threaded screw. If you open the vise too much, the jaw could fall off, if you're not careful. I didn't want to spend 50% more for a pair of vise jaws, that I'd still have to cut down to size, so I made a set of vise jaws from a card magnet and some thick vinyl, that I had laying around. 5 stars, for the Irwin Clamp-On Vise, just don't try to use it like a regular bench vise. I give the vendor 3 stars because of the slow shipping. Purchased from Hugos Online via Amazon. Free shipping from Hugos Online, means waiting 10 days to receive you order. A couple of words about FEDEX Smartpost, It Stinks. In the future, I'll avoid purchasing anything online from a seller who ships using FEDEX Smartpost.

More info on Specs and photo of holes
This items seems sturdy and for certain Vise solutions is a winner. It is small and fits into a persons hand not the palm of the hand but the entire hand including fingers. The Clamp opens up to a distance of almost 2 inches it is actually 1 and 7/8'ths of an inch. so it easily can be clamped onto the side of a 2 by 4. The width of the jaws are as stated 3 inches The depth that someone can put something down into the vise is 1 and 1/2 inches also under the two jaws one each side is a half moon shaped notch that is not easily noticed in the picture when the vise is closed a pencil can easily be run through this hole but a chap stick would not fit - so that is the size of it. You can therefore clamp down on a rounded object on this part of the vice that is thicker than a pencil. This area is a better option to clamp down on a rounded object than the smooth and flat jaws above it. The jaws of the vise open up to a distance of right at 3 inches but the vise is loose and wobbly at this point because it has been so far opened but there is still some threaded area gripping the main side of the vice that would allow one to clamp something down. There are even two holes in the vice that would allow one to bolt it to a piece of wood these holes DO NOT go up and down in the direction of the clamp but rather are located on the side of the clamp part of the vice so they would be going Horizontal to the Clamp and not Vertical or in other words in the same direction the clamp is going. Notice the pic.

GOOD FOR LIGHT INFREQUENT USE
I PURCHASED THIS BASED ON MY PAST EXPERIENCE WITH IRWIN TO HOLD LAWN MOWER BLADES WHILE SHARPENING THEM. THE GOOD THE CASTING AND PAINT. THE TOLERANCES ARE GOOD FOR THE PRICE ESPECIALLY THE JAW FIT THE NOT SO GOOD: THE JAWS ARE LESS THAN 3" WIDE (SEE 1ST IMAGE) THE QUALITY OF THE STEEL USED FOR THE HANDLE CLAMP, GUIDE BARS AND THE SCREW. (THE GUIDES ARE CORRODING AFTER 1 YEAR IN THE GARAGE). THE LESS THAN 3" DIMENSION OF THE JAWS. THE LACK OF JAW PLATES. THE JAW CONTACT SURFACE IS PAINTED AND CAN AND WILL MARK THE OBJECT BEING CLAMPED. THE INCONSISTENCY IN WHAT AZ SHOWS. (IMAGE 3 SHOWS UNPAINTED JAWS AND ANVIL) THE ANVIL SURFACE IS SMALL, YOU RISK CRACKING THE VISE.

Great little vise
Very solid little vise that adapts to many types of tables, so it does come in very handy for the small holding jobs. For more money, you can get the ones that pivot in all directions but if that's not necessary, than this one will give better stability and resistance. Typical Irwin quality, the opening and closing is smooth and all of the pieces are machines with good precision for the price. Only gripe is that the jaws are solid, without any gripping teeth or rubber surface. So I had to purchase magnetic rubber contact jaws separately, which add to the total price. If you found my review helpful, please select yes.

Buena Prensa

Very nice vise. The box shows two plastic covers on the clamping jaws of this vise, but unfortunately they didn't come included. The jaws are not serrated though, so they shouldn't be marking anything if you don't torque the vise too much. The unit is very well made though and can be used for small to medium jobs practically anywhere. I use it at the office if I ever have to do any equipment maintenance: just clamp it to your desk and you have a small but very solid vise at your disposal. Excellent for holding things still while you drill, rivet or glue them together! It also features a tiny little anvil on it too, but I'm a bit paranoid about hammering things on it, as I don't want to damage the nice looking baked-on blue paint! Overall, this tool is a small work of art, lol.... :)
