Minor issues but Best vice for my work
Pivoting jaw kicks ass. I create a lot of stuff that’s organic in shape. I broke my last vice because I was always forcing it to do things it wasn’t designed to do. Looks like it’s built to last. Stay tuned.

Excellent piece of equipment
The device arrived properly packed and undamaged in shipment. Installation was reasonably easy. I dismounted my bench top, turned it over and lag-bolted the vice into place. After replacing the bench top on the supports, I tried several different kinds of holding tasks. Compared to my old vice, the vice holds much better and doesn't require cranking the jaws down hard. Cons: . The wooden jaw facings. The magnetic backing is a nice idea but the grip is too weak, and the facings slide around some while placing or removing work pieces in the jaws. I don't know how much the vise is marked up because these are added, but I would not buy them separately. . Action is generally good, but the specific implementation does not permit simply cranking the vice closed on a piece, or at least that's my experience. The quick-release is used to both open and close the jaws with the handle turned only slightly. This would not be an issue without the magnetic jaw facings. Trying to position a piece, which may displace the magnetic facings is a bit irksome. The solution is to make your own facings and fasten them to the jaws, which are equipped with threaded holes for that purpose.

When having a new vice is a good thing
This is the second Wilton vice I have used in the past 10 years. Moved recently and left the old Wilton installed in my work bench in the old house. It had held up well, but the slide feature was all but useless. Glad to see this model is redesigned and love the square steel channel that covers the main screw. Should really keep it dust free. I decided to hold it in place with four bolts, and not use lag screws. Bolts are more positive and easier to attach. Much easier than my last installation where I manually held the unit while I drove in lag screws. This time, I held the vice in position with 6" C-clamps and drilled my 3/8" holes from below, using the vice base as a fool proof template. I then drilled a 5/8" diameter countersunk hole for each bolt head in my 3/4" MDF work surface. I embedded 4 bolts 3-1/2" X 3/8" into the top of the work bench and used Gorilla Glue to hold them in place as it expands as it sets (make sure you catalyze one surface with water) filling the void spaces around the flats. If my countersunk hole was not perfectly centered (I clamped a 3/4" board with a 5/8" hole already drilled over the top surface over each hole to keep my drill bit from wandering) I used a chisel to cut a corner for the hex head if needed. Once the glue had set over night (I put a non stick surface and heavy weights over each hole to keep the foam from expanding upwards), I used a hydraulic jack to lift into position below the bench to install the four nuts. Non of my embedded bolts twisted free with moderate torque, so all went well.

Great vise, but check face alignment.
This is a sturdy vise with nice looking castings and screw machining. However, I worry about quality control. While most Wilton products are made in the USA, this is a Taiwan product. When first arrived, I noticed that the auxiliary (tilting) face did not clamp as it should, with bottom contact and 1/8" gap at the top. The stationary faces clamped flush, and were OK. I do not know how a product this far out of tolerance could have left their facility. I will give compliments to Amazon, as when I asked to return for the defective unit, they had a replacement on the road within one day of my request. The faces of the replacement vise are well aligned. I have had the vise for a month. It clamps securely without much effort and the quick release operates smoothly. My wish list would be for the vise to include a more traditional pop-up dog built into the stationary face. I would also advise purchasers to check face alignment immediately upon receipt.

Easy Installation - best quality
The best quality. I have three in my shop -- the others have been in use for 25+ years. I could recall no problem with previous installations. I have no clue what the fuss is about installation. Mine was in - and working - in 8 minutes ! Drill 4 holes through 3 inches of workbench. Place the carriage bolts thru holes. Support the new vise on a bench or big box under the workbench, and add shims under the vise until the vise is up --- where is is to be attached. Place nuts on end of carriage bolts. THAT'S IT. You certainly don't need 2 people. Like I said, 8 minutes. I timed it because of the comments about difficulty of installation. It's heavy because it's made of steel, and it needs support under it before you could possibly get a nut on a carriage bolt, but it's easy using shims to raise it into proper location. Your grand kids will use this vise. Excellent quality. AY

Great Vise Rock Solid and great Rapid action opening.
I had a 9 inch Quick release vise before. The kind with the lever you turn and then pull the vise out. It never worked right and over time, the metal weakened, meaning you would have to hold the handle down to turn the screw, or else it would not advance properly. This Vise is a beast and the rapid action works great. It installed easy and comes with magnetic maple face plates. I made a chop for it, but it's still nice to have the magnetic ones.

Great vice!
Awesome vice. Sturdy and very solid. Well made. The quick release feature works well. The outer jaw contains a second jaw that pivots to allow you to clamp objects of uneven width. This also pops up to serve as a dog. I removed this second jaw because, when its in place, it's very difficult to clamp a piece of wood on just one side of the lead screw. But I can see myself using it for non-parallel clamping jobs. Comes with the magnetic maple pads as shown; these are a nice idea but they move around quite a bit as the magnets are not super-strong. I will replace these with the screw-in kind (there are holes for mounting). It's heavy, so definitely turn your bench upside down to mount. Only negative thing is that the cheap tinfoil brand tag fell off, but I can live with that.

Wood vise that works as it should
Easy to install and works like a good wood vise should. Worth the money!

Probably the best vice there is
Well made and very sturdy, particularly liked the magnetic vice jaws.
