How to change setting from "liters" to "gallons"
Turn on device. Push in button until you see "per Min" in the lower right corner. Now, press in button for two seconds. Display will now change from Liters to "Gal". Congrats!

Works great after you get one that works at all
Like others, my first unit didn't work because the included battery was installed without a protective tab. I measured it at around 200mV, which basically means a completely dead battery. So I bought a brand new battery, and while it did work for a while the unit's battery contacts were bent and it would keep turning on/off as the power connection was lost. So I returned it and opted for an exchange, which was free and very easy to do with Amazon. My second unit again had the battery installed without a tab, but this time the battery was fresh so the unit did work. Installation was a breeze, and the measurements do seem accurate. I just use the liters setting and convert to whatever other unit I want. One thing to note is that (as others have noted) it doesn't register flow rates under 0.2liters/min, so it won't detect trickle leaks or very low usage. However, it was great for measuring how much water my irrigation system uses and tuning the watering durations accordingly. It also showed me exactly how much water I'm saving after fixing a few significant irrigation pipe leaks. I have to say, Gardena is very very dumb for shipping untabbed batteries. That being said, if you get a unit with a working battery and use it to measure nontrivial flow rates, you'll be happy! Mine has been installed and running for 1.5 weeks now and is going strong even with weather exposure (direct sun, heavy rain). The various settings are short-term total (up to 9999.9), season total (up to 99999), auto (last watering total), and instantaneous flow rate. I pretty much just use the auto and flow rate settings, but I could really see the other settings being useful if (for example) you want to see how much water your pool uses per month.

Works….. ok
Didn’t work as expected. Battery only last a couple weeks

German precision. Third-world accuracy.
I calibrated this thing with a 5-gallon bucket, actually 5.5 US gallons to the rim when I independently measured it. Because this meter displays Imperial gallons (= 1.2 US gallons) I expected a reading of 4.6 for a completely full bucket. Instead, I got a reading of 6.5 (7.8 US gallons) at full gush. That's about 40% too high, not even close enough for government work. At the lowest flow I could get the meter to activate (0.5 GPM), I got a reading of 2.9 (3.5 US gallons). This time the measurement was about 45% too low. Thinking I did something wrong, I repeated this the next day and got similar results; 6.4 Imperials at high flow, 3.0 at low flow. Well, at least it's precise in that it's consistently inaccurate at a particular GPM flow. I imagine there's some magical flow where the stars align and the meter displays accurate results, but I don't have the time to empirically discover it. I've already wasted enough time (and water) on this overpriced piece of plastic. STRIKE 1. STRIKE 2: At very low flow rates, the meter even doesn't turn on. Even if the meter was Germanically accurate, I still couldn't use it because 0.5 GPM minimum flow is too high to properly deep-soak plants in our hard-baked desert soil. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but it would've been nice to know this before I made the purchase. STRIKE 3: I couldn't figure out how to turn it on, and the scrap of paper that passed for instructions didn't help. After considerable hassle, I discovered the problem was a dead battery because the manufacturer failed to include an insulating tab between the battery and its connector. C'mon, I've seen cheap flashlights and other battery-powered trinkets that came with battery protection tabs. If the Chinese and Taiwanese have the foresight to include this, why can't the Germans? I'm surprised and disappointed at how inaccurate and useless this thing is. I have a Gardena lawn sprinkler which runs like a Swiss watch, and I anticipated the same quality from this meter, given its price. It looks pretty, but the only parts that work are the quick-connectors, the reset button, and the replacement battery. On the bright side, mine didn't leak. Then again I only ran about 30 gallons through it, mostly at low flow.

GARDENA WATER TIMER - WATER SMART - FLOW METER Model 9188
This includes all the connections necessary. I was somewhat confused when I looked at this and the 'Frequently Bought Together' area showed connectors also being purchased. I guess some buyers want more than one connector set. The accuracy seems pretty close to what I measured. I don't know if a higher or lower flow rate would affect it or not. It is simple to connect and use but I would not recommend connecting it directly to a 'fixed' connection, such as a faucet, and then connecting a hose to the other end as it is plastic and probably would not hold up to any strong hose 'pulling'. The reason for the four star instead of five is due to the instructions. They are in French and English and are in VERY TINY print which is difficult for us 'older' folks to read. Not only that but they don't say anything about how to change liters <-> gallons. What you have to do is push the 'reset' button for a few seconds. Simple- if you know how. I think this is a useful tool to use in ways such as with a 'soaker hose' to tell how much water you have put down, or when applying fertilizer or something similar that requires a water mixture ratio.

Great value
I wish it displayed gallons in stead of liters (if it does, it's not very clear how to change it).

Wrong description on the item
Understand that is a meter but please remove the timer portion. Misleading!

Does exactly what we wanted it for.
We wanted a meter to give us a reasonably accurate reading on the volumes of water we are using on our garden irrigation system and the rate of application. We can attach it easily to different zones with the quick connects. When we tested it on filling a known volume it seemed accurate enough for our purposes and within 5%. All in all, we are happy with our purchase. We would have given it 5 stars if the price in CAD$ had been more reasonable.

Surprisingly Good
I tested the device for accuracy and it was excellent. Also, the various setting are easy to use and understand.

Excellent pour contrôler précisément le débit d’eau nécessaire afin de maximiser l’utilisation de boyaux suintants…;-)
