not great, but some decent features.
Let me start with saying I have had a fair amount of experience with Belt sanders. I have used them for over 50 years. I've had quite a few of them so I think I can rate one pretty well. I've had cheap ones and pretty good ones. Recently an old AGM one burned up on me, so, I thought I'd pick up a new one. I don't use them day in day out, (I have a wide belt sander, edge sanders, stationary belt sanders, disc sanders, oscillating spindle sanders, ETC, all to suggest that I have enough experience with sanding to know a bit of what I'm talking about. I have an old makita belt sander too, which is still in good shape, but I needed an extra one for a pretty big project. If this was the only belt sander I would have, I would have bought an old Porter Cable or maybe a new Fesstool, but it isn't. The design is not bad, looks to be durable. The dust collection is certainly better than my AGM was. The platen is "ok" and the old style platen with the graphite seems to be now giving way to the metal with the rubber back. Ok, fair enough. Right out of the box, putting a belt on and using it, I hated it. It doesn't seem very balanced and tends to easily grab and dig in on the belt side, (left). I played with it for awhile and found with a lot more effort and care, I COULD get it to perform marginally satisfactorily. I ALMOST returned it, but the only other option I'd consider was the Makita and that was double the price and I already had an older Makita, (though slightly larger at the 3x24 rather than the 3x21. For a beginnner, this would be a nightmare. 3X21 is a harder size to use, as there isn't much flat stable surface as even a 3x24. A 4x24 would be easier, (but heavier) for a beginner. A lot to using a belt sander is the sanding pattern. Don't just sand in the direction of the grain. At the beginning, on a slab, sand at an angle to the grain, just to flatten the work. Like sanding a floor, you have to go at angles. Once it is flattened, I use a bit lighter paper and work with the grain, but slide the sander at an angle. This sander easily tips, and even bounces. First time I've had such a bouncy sander. It DOES have enough power, adjustability, ease of changing belts, etc. just not very well balanced. You can make it work. Dial down the speed a bit at first. Also don't apply too much pressure on the sander. (always a mistake made by beginners), let the weight of the sander do it's work. Also, if you have an area that seems to need more sanding, don't concentrate much in that area, if it is a dipped area. just sand the whole piece, then look again. If it still needs sanding, you have to sand the whole piece again.

Very happy
What a beast. Worked very well on my first project. With the 5 year warranty, I believe I made a good purchase. I wore out my Black & Decker on this same job.

New doesn't always mean new
Tool is fine, nothing special. Would be nice to have received a new one as advertised (and paid for) rather than a slightly used, repackaged one with a useless folded belt. New doesn't always mean new.

Not New
The product is awesome. However this is definitely not a new product as advertised. Quite a bit of scratch and appears to be a remanufactured one. Nevertheless it’s still a good product and certainly cheaper than buying new.

Solid Belt Sander
I have used this sander for 2 days now to sand a deck and it is a solid performer. The sander built sturdy and is heavier than I expected. I have been running it on the highest speed with 40 grit to remove old paint off a deck. There is enough power but I would prefer if it had a little more. The sander is easy to handle with good grips. The design allows you to sand flush into a corner which is a really nice feature. The dust collection is good and requires little extra cleanup. Changing sanding belts is simple and the belt tracking is working well and easy to adjust. One thing to note is that when I took it out of the box it appeared to have been used. There were some scratches in the paint and other marks indicating that a sanding belt had been run for short while. There were also signs of abrasion in the dust collection tube. So I called Amazon to report my find. They apologized and sent out a new sander the next day. To my surprise, the replacement sander had all the same scratches and wear marks. So, I can only assume that Metabo must do some quality check by running the sander for a short time with a belt. If this is so, I would suggest that they add some documentation to the customer indicating why the sander appears to have been used. I kept the original sander and returned the replacement.

Cost little enough you can have 2!
My immediate impression straight out of the box was amazed. It feels so good in the hand and sturdy. I am a heavy user of these things and always used the Makita but lost both mine in a fire. I switch between 80 and 100 so much I need 2 sanders. Was dreading spending almost 600 dollars for the other brand. Literally at this price? I might get 2 more! The pressure release is sort of tight for my fat fingers but easily opened with a contractor pencil. The bag seemed cheap however it's actually very durable and its nice not having it bouncing off your knuckles as hard. ONLY thing I don't like is the position of the power cord on top. Your not supposed to do this.. BUT! I DRIVE 2 nails into a bench and flip it over and sand like a bench top sander. No biggie. Going to make a quick saddle jig. Bottom line? You will absolutely not regret choosing this sander. PERIOD! Been a Hitachi fan for over 20 years. Now under Metabo? Great job. Other Metabo stuff I have and love? 12 inch and 10 inch mitre saws. Framing and roofing nailers. 10 out of 10 on ALL of them.

A bit diappointed
As instructed, maintain a light touch on the unit. Make sure to keep the belt flush on the sanded surface. Hard to keep sander from gouging so be very careful if working on a fine finish surface. Of course, sand with the grain and check surface often to make sure you are getting the results you want. I was sanding a rought cut hemlock mantel and didn't mind a rustic look. Changing paper is very easy. The see through feature on the front of the unit is useless as it quickly gets covered with dust. You need to tip the unit back to make sure the belt is tracking straight on the rollers. The belt tracking knob is easy to use on the LH side. This sander was not as easy to sand smoothly as my 50 year old Craftsman but is is a lot quieter and has the dust bag which does a decent job.

Worth the minor extra cost
I have tried other lesser expensive items. Unfortunately, they have many plastic parts nowadays and they do not last with modest level work. This item has good weight due to mostly metal construction, this weight then means the machine does with work with minimal down pressure and better control. I have used this unit to do my oak hardwood floors and am very happy with its' performance. I would recommend spending a bit more money to buy a mostly metal hard working unit.

Powerful, solidly built and easy to use
Purchased this to replace a Black & Decker sander. This Metabo is made of metal so it feels solid in your hands. The dust collector bag is effective but don't let it get overly full. Belt tracking adjustment is simple with a convenient knob allowing to get perfect tracking. Power is abundant. I sanded 9' diameter cedar posts 8 feet long to make the exterior smooth. I did 4 posts in succession which took a couple of hours and ran the sander the entire time with no issues. Great product.

Buen producto
