So simple, I love Sketch Plan
This is a great device and so easy to use. With their iPhone app, I can use the Sketch Plan feature to roughly draw a room with my finger, take measurements which pop onto the app, and add those measurements to each line I drew. The app automatically resizes the roughly drawn lines to the exact measurements I dragged onto the sketch. You can then add windows, doors, etc. and save or share the dimensioned drawing. It will tell you square feet of the room for flooring, or volume of the room if you add wall height. This is a free feature (there are 2 other free features and 2 more you can choose to subscribe to). Of course, you can just take individual measurements without the app really easily too. I previously loved the Leica brand and this device confirmed my opinion.

A solid LMT - know your job needs first
Needed to do a 'site survey' for a quote. Picked this up last night and now I really like it. UPDATE: 2021-05-21 After using this on a job site, I'm a very happy customer. With this nifty gadget I was able to take a massive amount of measurements on the site, all by myself, and in really good time. It did what I needed without a single hiccup. In hindsight, I definitely would have sprung for the ~$500 model. Making all my own drawings took too long. PROS: YES - easy to use, but read the manual first - it's a Laser Measurement Tool, (What part about 'laser' makes you think 'wing it'?) Well built, compact, and the materials used seem to be good durable plastics. Well designed: The flip out tool, the locking battery door design, and even the way the lanyard attaches make me think that whoever designed this took their time to try and make every piece fit and work as well as they could. Good instruction manual (online), useful training videos. The flip-out offset tool automatically adjusts the measurement, and a nice touch. The measurement functions are numerous, and covered all of my needs for a basic 'as-built' site survey. The Bluetooth connection is strong, and I really like how you can customize the way it records your measurements. You can change the precision, add things like date, time, add carriage returns, use tabs, etc. which makes it easier to use different software to collect your measurements. I didn't find the buttons hard to press as others have reported. CONS: No 1/4" hole for tripod/stand mount. A little small for my preference, but it is extremely portable. I wish that all the sides were flat and square, as it just makes more sense. Built for smaller/simpler jobs - or where software interface requirements are minimal. The battery life is just acceptable. I had my drawings made in advance, and the measurements in-room were fairly quick, but I'd guess that I got about 6hrs of use from one set of AA batteries. SUMMARY: Know your work before you buy a LMT. This unit works great for smaller jobs, and can do bigger jobs if you build your own maps/drawings - but I found that creating the drawings and adding numbers to all places in the drawing that needed measurement took me 10x as long as taking the actual measurements. If you're doing survey work, large remodels, or anything that involves creating a detailed 'as built' drawing of multiple spaces - you'll want a tool that will build the drawings for you. This means one with an inclinometer, more processing power, and bigger battery capacity.

DISTO integration, not what I thought, also, what a pain to press.
Full disclosure, I have two others, a BOSH Professional GLM 30 & a Kobalt LDM-35. Leica made a good device, that's not in question, but out of all of them the BOSH is my favorite to use even though it doesn't have the Leica's range, hence the 4-star rating. I bought this specifically to use for the DISTO (bluetooth) integration with Xactimate's Mobile App for Insurance Adjusting. While it worked in the way it was advertised, I felt the entire process was one step forward and two steps backward in relation to sketching on a sheet of paper and then recreating it in the software. Despite my many poor experiences with Xactimate's integration, I still had high hopes for Leica's own App software but that was a let down too. Like other reviewers had mentioned, without the scaling feature, the App is absolutely lacking for professional use. The D2 is made to handle a lot of abuse, no question about it. It's very well constructed. I'm a big fan of the battery compartment access method, the pull out arm/shelf that creates a right angle for squaring edges of walls, etc. is awesome - I wish more companies had that feature. The short amount of time for holding down the 'CLEAR OFF' button is the best out of all of the devices for turning the device off and it has the best viewing angles out of all of my other laser pointers. I also really appreciate how by default the backlight remains active even though it's unclear how this will affect the overall battery usage, but here's where it's lacking for me and it's simple, it's not comfortable to use. I can picture this device being used in extremely cold weather and someone with big gloves on using it without issue; You're not accidentally going to trigger this device, everything requires intent. The buttons are stiff, too stiff for what I prefer when using it one handed which is 90% of the way I use a meter in the field, with the index finger triggering the laser calculation and the other fingers stabilizing the device on the wall. You may think I'm complaining, but when you're measuring 30+ walls per house and you're doing multiple houses per day 7 days a week, it makes a big difference. To use an Analogy, the Leica D2 is like a tank. It's going to take a lot to destroy it, it's extremely well built. It's designed to get a job done and it will do that. But like a tank, it's not a smooth ride. This device is not comfortable to hold one-handed, especially in relation to the BOSH. Leica had made their buttons extremely low profile too in relation to other manufacturers and while I believe I can understand this methodology, for my use it makes this device more of a pain to use because it requires that much more effort to trigger the button. When using the device one-handed, the index finger is already in a compromised position where the finger is weaker than normal. I get Leica is Swiss made, BOSH is Malaysia, and Kobalt is Chinese, but in testing, the BOSH was just as accurate as the Leica every single time. I think I'll keep the Leica given its distance is the largest out of all of the other devices as it's always good to have extra ones in the field as a backup. I can especially see a use for commercial properties given its range. It's my hope that they improve the Bluetooth functionality on all Apps, but the BOSH Professional GLM 30 is still going to be my go-to pointer when measuring distances 100' and less. That baby is easy on the finger when doing lots of measuring.

Awesome little tool
I've been using a Leica Disto for my survey work for years-- specifically, measuring floor plans for condominium surveys. I love it so much that I bought my own D2. The D2 is definitely a cheaper model than the ones I've used at my work, but it's an awesome tool, nonetheless! I highly recommend buying this or any model of Leica Disto.

I don't recommend buying for the Bluetooth or App.
Measuring: Perfect as advertised. Extremely accurate and consistent measurements. Build Quality: bad. Batteries: Picky • NiMH 1.2v 900mAh 1080mWh - lasts about 4 hours of heavy use. This device will will always show the low battery icon. I'm guessing it is because NiMH are 1.2v when the device asks for 1.5v. • Li-ion 1.5v 600mAh 900mWh - lasts a few weeks longer of heavy use. Despite being less capacity, I'm guessing the device is picky about the voltage. Construction Materials: Cheap Keep it in it's case at all times or you WILL scratch the screen. The "DIST" button is too hard to press. For long measurements you have to have a very steady hand which is impossible when trying to press this button. The "DIST" button is also hard to feel. You don't want to have to look at the device when your eyes are busy watching the laser dot. The case it comes in is ok at best. The velcro doesn't allow it to hang on my belt too well. The red alignment clip on the back will fall off permanently in due time. there are to small pins holding it on and nothing holding the pins from sliding out. Good thing I never use it. Unintended Feature: Fine adjust on a wall. When you have the side of the device pressed against a wall, you can roll the device on the wall to bring the laser closer to or away from the wall. Super useful trick. The App: Useless The Bluetooth features are absolutely useless. It way faster to just use pen and paper. Since I have a phone with a pen I prefer to draw on top of blueprint screenshots.

Batteries die quick but does the job.
I returned mine and ended up getting a Bosch with a rechargeable battery. Batteries die within 4-6 hrs of fairly Regular use. I can’t carry that many batteries constantly for what I do so it’s a deal breaker. Other than that, the unit performed well. I like that other brands have rounding functions as I only need to be accurate to the nearest 1/8th. Has some weight to it and doesn’t feel cheap like some. The measurements on mine were actually off consistently by about 1/16 to 1/8 so I took that into consideration for all my measures.

Great little handy tool for anyone in the design & construction industry
Switched from old basic Bosch to Leica & couldn't be happier. Love the additional features. The fact that I can use the app to create floor plans while measuring is priceless. It saves a ton of work transferring hand drawn to off or other cad formats & the additional option of measuring on photos is brilliant because you don't have time to specify 3D imagery on site always, this gives you an accurate representation without the need for 3D in 1 glance. Yes it is on the expensive side but it is also more rugged. Was concerned about other reviews saying the buttons are harder to push, didn't find that to be the case & if u still don't want to do that, just use the button in the app. I would recommend this product over the other ones on the market right now that are either low end or high end but don't have all the features.
