Nice base for a costume bonnet

This is pretty cheesy as it is but I made it over as a passable 1830s bonnet for a Dickens event. It's not accurate but it was easy to work with and looked OK in a pinch. I don't have any experience making bonnets from scratch so having a base was very helpful when I was in a hurry.

Large but sturdy

It runs large but that works for me. It's usually cold when we are caroling outside so I can fit ear muffs or a sock hat under this hat.

Burgundy is red

The only bone I have to pick with this bonnet is that the burgundy color is actually bright red. I thought it might have been a mistake, but nope, the tag says burgundy so that’s just how it is.

Hat in a hurry? This is it. (Also, how to fix a dented hat.)

If you need a hat for a Jane Austen/Dickens event and you are considering this one because you have a tight deadline (or budget) and are limited to buying something that has Amazon Prime shipping speed, I will save you some time and tell you this is the best thing you are going to find on Amazon. (At least at the time that this review was written.) This is a very nice Halloween quality hat or a decent blank. If you need it to try to hold its own in a cosplay/period reenactment scenario, well, it was not created for that market but if you treat it as a blank and overhaul it, you can make something nice out of it. So if you want to overhaul the hat, just know that you can easily remove the inferior ribbons and scrape off the residual hot glue with a hot hairdryer or heat gun. If you cover the hat with enough fabric, lace, ribbons, flowers, and feathers, you should be able to hide the hat's humble origins. I chose the middle road in decorating my hat. I did decorate it with high quality trimmings but I didn't go so far as to completely hide every inch of the cheap underlying material. BTW, if the hat comes dented, don't panic. It is fixable-happened to me. Get the area where the crease/dent is wet all the way though but not soaking wet. Spray the inside of the wet dented area of the hat with spray starch. Push against and hold the dent/crease/wrinkle in the shape you want it to dry in and hit it with a hot hair dryer or heat gun until it is bone dry and stiff again. You might need someone to hold the hair dryer for you and you might want some leather gloves or oven mitts to protect your hands from the heat. It could take 5-10 minutes of blow drying to ensure you get it bone dry in the position you want. That is how I fixed mine. You'd never know. Obviously it would have been better if it had not shown up dented in the first place but the fix took less time than returning it would have taken. Just know that this synthetic felt hat is made to imitate wool felt hats that retail around $80. A wool felt hat is a fall/winter hat so this hat works very well as a Christmas caroling hat for that reason. If you get this hat to wear at say a summer picnic where everyone else is wearing seasonally appropriate straw, no matter how fine your decorations are it's going to look a bit off unless you completely cover the entire synthetic felt surface with lace and/or fabric. I decorated mine with a fall theme so it looks okay with the felt still showing.

Great bonnet for my costume!

I am attending a Dickens of a Christmas celebration on December 3rd and wanted this bonnet for my costume to decorate with lace and artificial winter foliage and flowers. This will be just the thing. It is comfortable and sturdy and perfect for my costume. I highly recommend it.
